"Hakuna Matata" // [Summer-Mix] By Dennis Kruissen - 06/2015

Typesun, aka Luke Harney, is a Bristolian producer more well versed in music's avant-garde than might be expected from his break out single, The PL, a slice of minimal underground soul, that for all its echoes of Chet Baker's lonesome jazz still found its way onto Radio 1, becoming something of a hit for an artist who often treads more experimental ground. Typesun's work though comes from that Bristol tradition; trip hop, dub, and rave, which he attacks with an obvious appreciation for good-time sound-system soul that cuts through the city's sometimes sombre tone.

Portland pair @WoodOx continue supplying the vibes with “Full Moon Trance”, a jazz-infused joint full of lucid sounds. Opening with a smooth series of chords and chimes the percussion slowly kicks in, turning the slow progression into a pacing one, while extracts of conversations get lost in-between the rhythms, much like listener’s mind states as the sonic environment engulfs them. The song is even more effective thanks to it's artwork, a stunning photograph taken by the couple's friend George Pacheco.

The song is the latest loosie from the husband and wife duo, who craft hip-hop sounds with an electronic influence and have featured on releases from Italdred, Blvnt Records, STYLSS and more. Fusing electronic beats with live instrumentation including drums, bass, viola, vocals and more they forge a connection between digital experimentation and expressive analogue performance. 

Wood Ox - Full Moon Trance

@foisey's first project of 2016 is almost here. Titled Frutas, the 27-track lo-fi release inspired by women, skateboarding, recent experiences and childhood memories. Spanish for the word “fruit”, the tracks act as a collection of them, with each offering an unique, pleasing flavour for the ears.

The project features a number of remixes and instrumentals, with vocals taken from tracks falling into a range of genres, so expect to push play and instantly fall into a head-nodding trance as the smooth and soulful vibrations take over. The Connecticut producer counts Dilla, 9th Wonder, Ohbliv and Knxwledge as modern day influences and in the project that’s clear: Frutas inspires a nostalgia comparable to releases by those aforementioned beatmakers.

If you’re like us you’ll be rewinding tracks on Frutas as it takes you on a journey back to the past when it drops on February 14th. First Ear are proud to premiere “shwEm.86”, the anthemic, Kelly Price-sampling lead single from the project.

NorCal’s own BläpDëli (@bl-pd-li) has linked up with up with First Ear to premiere “Hands”, a dreamy R&B cut. Driven by Bläp’s warm guitar chords, the chill-trap tones make for a perfect base as fellow Bay Area artist @P_Heir croons about getting high and getting down with his goddess. It’s as much a smoker’s anthem as it is a lover’s one.
 
The track is the third single from the expansive producer’s forthcoming album WOMAN, following “Just Discovered A Pyramid” and “Monotone Humm”. A tribute to the women of his life, WOMAN is also rooted in moving forwards from some of the difficult situations that contributed to the project’s creation.
