Shaw Island is the smallest of the San Juans. No tourist accommodations. Not many roads. Only one store, plus an outfit that makes fish tags. Only 165 people live there year-round. Mostly nuns, it seems. Until 2004, the island’s only store and ferry terminal were operated by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist.

We had been camping there for three days, playing in the driftwood, when a man stepped out from the woods one morning and sat down with us as if it was any other Tuesday. He sat quietly for two full minutes, while we looked on, astonished, then he finally spoke.

“Pezzner. I see it, you are Pezzner.”

Before he said that, he already seemed like a seriously weird dude. Scruffy, new clothes gone tattered, smelled a little. Didn’t make much eye contact. He cradled a cup of coffee and explained himself, or tried. He used to live in Seattle, doing work that was “technical, very,” but he’d moved to the island some time ago. He doesn’t remember exactly when. The problem, he said, was the voltage. Being around the lights and machinery gave him headaches, it hurt his eyes, he heard voices in the buzz, voices that told him to get away.

Here, he hides out in the Cedar Rock Reserve in the south part of the island. Foraging. Staying away from people, mostly, though in colder months he sleeps under the porches of the low-key millionaires who keep places on the island, but are hardly ever there. He said he was a musician, or “used to be,” or “sort of is maybe.” He brought some equipment, but only uses it two or three times a year. After a while, he says, it makes him tense. The headaches and voices come rushing back and he has to pull the plug.

He finished his coffee, accepted a hot bowl of oatmeal from us, then walked back into the woods without saying another word. Two days later, we were at the ferry dock when he materialized again, with a dirty padded envelope.

“Pezzner. Here, music, and documents. From an old session, a night session. And also, your bowl.”

The envelope contained a pile of hand-drawn ideograms and a single DAT. (I had to borrow a DAT machine.) On the tape was a single three-hour performance, non-stop, intact except for some noise and glitches. The tape was dirty, and had at one point been wet. The songs you hear on “Puerto Toro” are edited excerpts from this performance.

Melodic Diggers 034: 'Wandering Soundscape' by Underspreche

'It took Mr Raoul K more than three years of work inside and outside the studio to complete his first album for Compost Records. His first goal was to show all the musical influences he came across during his time in Ivory Coast. Ivorian music has incorporated musical traditions and instruments from East-Africa, West-Africa and from Central Africa a real musical melting pot. To complete 'African Paradigm', Mr Raoul K used lots of the instruments he bought during his trips to Africa - including a Kenyan Mbira and Senegalese talking drums, for example. 

All instruments you hear on 'African Paradigm' were played the old-fashioned analog way - no synthesized sounds. Mr Raoul K teamed up with vocalists Ahmed Sosso, Lady Parul and Sona Diabate to emphasize his message, because sometimes (only sometimes) words speak louder than music. His second goal was to share his view on Africa through his music, making 'African Paradigm' a political album as well. Mr Raoul K has always used his music as a means of political expression - 'Le Karantkatrieme Peul' dealing with Barack Obama's presidency, for example. 

The album's main track, 'African Paradigm', was an epic track with a running time of about 50 minutes. Mr Raoul K thinks of the track as a work in progress. Here he releases two finished parts plus an additional intro. The remaining parts are scheduled for a later release. If you listen closely, you can hear Mr Raoul K painting layer after layer after layer of sound until the whole picture finally appears. Showing a beautiful continent, torn apart by foreign powers, independent by law but still suffering from the burden of being colonialized for cheap labour and raw materials and suffering from inner conflicts and civil wars. The music mirrors this picture. You can hear the sense of urgency, the suffering - different kinds of driving drums, haunting percussion, dancing flutes, irie effects lurking in the shadows... But there are contemplation and hope as well - the hope, that there will be a better future for Africa.

Shortly after the album release, Mr Raoul K will also present the African Paradigm EP 2 in cooperation with Manoo.'

Premiere: Monkey Safari - Mantra [Get Physical]

Saqib and Bryant Jensen are dreamers, artists, visionaries and dear friends who DJ/produce dance music in Brooklyn. Between them they have about thirty years of musical experience ranging from metal to hip-hop to house, minimal and beyond.

Saqib is a resident artist and label manager for ebb + flow based in NYC and For The People based in Toronto. Bryant Jensen is a resident DJ for Bespoke Musik, the creative director for Zero, and in general a very well respected vibe creator.

Their friendship runs deep,as do their sets; anyone who taken a sonic journey with them can attest. To some they are known as Saqib and Bryant, but to others they are known simply as the Jamburglars.

Their energetic, spontaneous, and well-crafted dancefloor instigations have earned them notoriety in NYC and beyond. They are very active in the studio with several upcoming releases in 2020. Here, they remake the 23 year old “California Love” by Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur which is available as a free download.

Catch them in Brooklyn this Saturday December 21st for the Jam Burglars Holiday Shakedown at the Williamsburg Hotel water tower and at Love Burn 2020.

The World is Cancelled

In times where everything in our communities seems to be falling apart, we should all stand together. Staying positive and taking care of our loved ones and our surroundings is the best we can do for now. Living in fear isn’t going to help, especially bearing in mind that there are so many people out there who have struggled or are still undergoing wars, plagues and hunger throughout their whole lives. This is an opportunity to learn from this situation, to become more tolerant, present and mindful. Even if our input is limited to taking care of our families, friends and fellow community members. 

The music scene is being heavily impacted by this situation as we see more and more clubs and festivals shut down, but it’s not the end of the world. My contribution to making it that little bit better is this one hour mix  I share with you. The mix is filled with exclusive material that I’ve written in the last two years. Some of these tunes will see the light of day in the near future whilst others may never be released. As this mix is very personal to me, I’m sharing it with you to bring some joy and light in these dark times.

This is my prescription to you, whether you’re quarantined at home or anywhere else out there. Share the feeling around meanwhile the world is cancelled outside. 

Stay safe. Stay drunk on hope.
