Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, an compilation of music inspired by birdsong and a project fusing art with activism. We challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create an original piece of music inspired by and using the song of an endangered bird from their country.

The result is a beautifully diverse and rich album of fresh new music, fusing electronica with natural sound, folkloric rhythms with modern-synthesisers and precious singing with rich instrumentation. Each song tells a story and paints a picture of these magnificent birds.

Using music as a tool for change, 'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' aims to raise awareness about the plight of these beautiful but threatened species, many of which are on the edge of extinction. It will also raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco, two non-governmental organisations with the aim of ensuring the survival of birds and their vital habitat in Ecuador, one of the most rich countries for biodiversity in the world.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl in March 2015 via Rhythm and Roots. It will be accompanied by a series of one-off illustrations and post-cards from the American designer Scott Partridge.

In 2015, after 10 years of recording and touring through over 50 cities in five different countries, electronic folk duo Lulacruza released Orcas, their critically-acclaimed fifth studio album, and most intimate work to date. To make the recording, Lulacruza traveled from their native South America to Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest, crafting a both delicate and powerful album, which has garnered critical acclaim from Gilles Peterson to the Huffington Post, who wrote, “As musical alchemists, [Alexandra] Ortiz and [Luis] Maurette have achieved a harmonious balance between organic and inorganic sounds, creating a truly shamanic sonic journey.” 

January 15th, 2016 will mark the release of the first volume of Orcas Remixed, for which Lulacruza invited a select group of internationally renowned electronic music producers from across the globe to remix and rework their pristine, hyper-acoustic songs. The remixes will be released in five volumes of four remixes each through a “pay-what-you-want” download model, matching up producers from a wide range of genres and collectives, including digital cumbia from Argentina, New Mexican desert techno, transformational jungle kirtan and more. 

Orcas Remixed Vol. 2 includes remixes by Chancha Via Circuito, David Last, King Coya and MI. Other volumes feature remixes by Nicola Cruz, El Buho, SaQi, and Sleepers Work, Desert Dwellers, Paul Feathericci, San Ignacio, David Last, Montoya, EVHA and more. 

Lulacruza is releasing Orcas Remixed in collaboration with Colorado-based label, Black Swan Sounds. Since 2011, BSS has pursued a new vision for global music and has been a leader in the yoga and devotional electronic music scene, a unique match for Lulacruza’s deep roots of electronic folklore and ancestrally rooted music. Says Black Swan Minister of Music Joel Davis, “As a listener, I’ve been a fan of Alejandra and Luis’ music for several years, and as someone working in the record industry, I’ve admired their out-of-the-box, DIY approach. Given Black Swan’s aim to create a new paradigm for the 21st century record label, teaming up with Lulacruza on the Orcas Remixed project feels like a natural fit.”

Heading from Oslo straight to the breakfast club Crussen wakes anybody with his heavy trumpet and eponymous tune ‘Breakfast in the Hut‘ that is part of
Underyourskin‘s latest four tracker by the Norwegian. Grooving on a downtempo pace delightfully playing with chimes that alternate and merge with different synth patterns Crussen creates the cereals for a strong day and night. Viken Arman abstracts the original synths and raises the beats per minute to recreate a deepish and summerish remix anthem with a subtile melancholy. The EPs second and highly anticipated track ‘The Lambert Interpretation‘ is a melodical masterpiece combining piano and guitar elements smoothly before sweeping one into different spheres. Crussen‘s reinterpretation of the original is enriched with a choir like vocal that pours down all the emotions on the dance floor and hunts one throughout the night.
