MERGE ON THE FREEWAY IN DECEMBER

Vicknoise was the alter ego of Victor Palomo, also known as Shelby Grey (DJ, producer, and co-founder of Factor City Records alongside Undo). Producing and spinning, his imagination ran wild and limitless. Inspiration came from everywhere, from the roots of techno and electro, Chicago, Detroit, house, and disco, to soundtracks and avant-garde electronics. A true connoisseur.

Unfortunately, Victor left us in September 2024. This album is dedicated to his memory with a selection of some of his best tracks on Factor City. It includes an unreleased track with Sistema and two tracks with Undo that were only published on vinyl.

Undo & Vicknoise - TEN (Iñaqui Marin remix)

Stripping Asteroid back to just the vocals and slowly but surely building it back up from there, Escobar delivers a killer synth-heavy house track for when you want to reset the vibe in the club and take things to the next level. It's set to a slow burning fuse but when it all kicks in this Asteroid explodes like a firework.Finally, taking time out from drumming duties with Red Axes Udi Naor slips into his BĘÃTFÓØT alias to deliver a frenetic, peak time remix of Asteroid. Throwing everything from pummelling martial drums, rave stabs, urgent synths and pitched up vocals into the mix, Naor's remix burns through the sky like a particularly wildly piloted UFO, a sci-fi synth stunner with all strobes set to stun.

boys be kko is a stellar producer from Japan. This EP features a classy assortment of house music, each track paced differently, yet this was our favourite – a deep moody cut.

They effortlessly blend slow-burning tribal techno with the raw pulse of new beat, all wrapped in an early techno shell. Imagine dancing barefoot in a ritual under a disco eclipse. To complete the record, Playground Records boss Martin Noise joins forces with rising sensation Anastasia Zems, taking the release into full-blown dancefloor sorcery. The groove runs deep, the bass is sweaty, and the toad… well, the toad is on fire.

"A betrayal is an unexpected twist. A moment of schizophrenia where the world is turned upside down. We feel the curvature of the earth and it becomes explicit to us that there is something on the other side of our world that we didn't know. Or that we don't really know our world as we thought we did. It feels like a wobbling of the ground on which we tread, frantic, torn and passionate at the same time. But we can also betray ourselves. We betray ourselves by taking different paths that lead to places we did not think of. How does a betrayal sound, how does it feel, in what frequencies and energies does it vibrate?

Ultimately, what is there is always an unforeseen.
"Traiciones" plays with the idea of what we can feel when we feel betrayed, but also that the tracks themselves betray us, by taking different paths than expected, by changing the bpm in the middle of the track, or by promising a track that will never exist."

INCOMING : Radondo - Doubt #Volition

In recent years, Blackploid has come to be one of Central Processing Unit’s signature artists. The German producer has averaged more than a record a year for the Sheffield imprint since he first landed on CPU in 2021. This prolific run continues with Cosmic Drama, Blackploid’s second LP for the label. The album takes the baton from its predecessor Enter Universe in style, delivering twelve tracks of top-quality machine-funk that draw down from electro’s classic artists while also imbuing proceedings with a playfulness that very much gives things a signature Blackploid-ish flavour.

Cosmic Drama sets its stall out from the off. The opening run of ‘Alien’, ‘World Construction’ and ‘Virtual State’ all deliver piston-snapping beats which anchor pleasing melanges of B-movie synth lines. Alongside this, Blackploid adds little flourishes which add buoyancy to each joint - a syncopated bassline reminiscent of I-f’s late-90s classic ‘Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass’, crackling robo-voiced commands, skittering synth chords which wash across the mix and so on. It’s the work of someone completely at ease with their craft, comfortable enough to take risks without upsetting the apple cart of their sound’s core appeal.

Blackploid’s idiosyncratic approach to synth work is something which distinguishes Cosmic Drama from the pack. Electro has long been a genre which prides itself on innovation on the keys, but few producers are willing to push their sonics as far as Blackploid does - take the seasick churn of pads and processors on ‘Multiverse’, for instance, or the way John Carpenter-esque single-note lines dovetail with gurgling synthetic pulses and eerie, spacious chords on ‘The Lab’, a highlight of Cosmic Drama’s midsection.

Cosmic Drama skips along at club tempo throughout - every one of these joints will get bodies moving in dark rooms across the galaxy. However, even when tracks maintain their single-minded pursuit of machine-funk perfection, they never forget to deliver on the hooks. Blackploid has lead lines (and counter-melodies) to burn here, and each track knots them together in ever-more intriguing ways as they plough onwards. Drexciyan heads will be thrilled by the sci-fi delights of ‘Species’, for instance, while Blackploid brings melodies as cold as they are catchy on the aptly-named ‘Polar Dunes’. By the time Cosmic Drama hits upon the vroom-vrooming bassline line of closer ‘Contact’, you’re fully enthralled to the album’s combination of broken-beat heft and synthetic melodiousness.
