If you haven’t heard directly of John Acquaviva’s works, the chances are - whatever your involvement with electronic music is - that you will be aware of his work and influence within the electronic music community. The Italian-Canadian artist may be best known for his involvement with the techno titan Richie Hawtin, and the forming of the highly influential labels Plus 8 Recordings and DEFINITIVE recordings, however his influence and reach extends in swathes beyond these considered pillars of dance music culture.

Although his music and industry accolades sit amongst the greatest in the game, much more can be said about the kind of driven, open-minded character John Acquaviva possesses. A natural entrepreneur, an industry visionary and an avid collector of records, Acquaviva has long set the pace in an underground movement that has become so fruitful and diverse since its inception - not to mention being one of the most technically gifted DJ’s to grace a pair of turntables. Acquaviva is as intrinsic to the progression of dance music as any and a true pioneer in the evolution of what we consider the modern DJ.

On the technological front, no other DJ has made such significant contributions to the advancement of how DJs perform. Acquaviva’s masterful technique and firm grasp of the trade led to his fruitful involvement with Final Scratch and Beatport. A vital founder and active member of both companies – the former, a tool that allows manipulation and playback of digital audio sources, and the latter, a major online hub for electronic music – John’s role extends far beyond his taste making capabilities. He’s been an integral figure in sculpting the genre’s game-changing transition from analogue to digital, and from vinyl to turntables and laptops. Sharing this vision with fellow Canadian act Richie Hawtin, the pair spearheaded a project that would act as the iTunes of dance. Together, the duo arguably paved the path for a new and zestful era.

In 1990, Acquaviva and Hawtin co-founded Plus 8 Records, which capitalised on minimal releases from Cybersonik, Speedy J, Kenny Larkin and Plastikman. It wasn’t until 1993, however, that the pair began to truly embrace their passions for house music by dishing up a second imprint – DEFINITIVE Records. An imprint that was later re-launched in 2005 inspired by the uprising of Beatport and the new future of music distribution. Defined by a more progressive and tech house sound from such luminaries as Olivier Giacomotto, the imprint marked the beginning of John’s unparalleled taste as a global powerhouse and exemplar in dance music. Still releasing music to this day, DEFINITIVE has gone on to be one of the most iconic labels in dance music history.

2016 was a phenomenal year for John Acquaviva. Alongside Director and Writer Jimmie Gonzalez, Acquaviva Executive Produced The Red Man film. A modern day psychological mystery, which delves into the life of a contemporary DJ, The Red Man won numerous awards including ‘Best Feature Film Audience Choice Award’ at the 2015 Yellow Fever International Film Festival, ‘2015 Platinum Award Best Nevada Film’ at the Nevada Film Festival and ‘Best Screenplay’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Faraldo’ at the 2015 Macabre Faire Film Fest. front, Acquaviva was also dubbed ‘Electronic Music Pioneer’ at the 2016 DJ Awards in Ibiza.

Texas-born and LA-seasoned, Moneyjaw doesn’t waste time easing in.

His new collab with ZEALE - “Adderall” / “Imposter” - cuts straight through the noise. It’s not about reinventing the wheel. It’s about sharpening the blade. Both tracks push a hybrid of bass-heavy ghetto house, techy percussion, and vocal-led club pressure. Big personality, no fluff.

Moneyjaw (aka Thomas Sahs) brings years of dig-deep production work and a sharp ear for sampling. He’s been in the game under multiple guises, but 2025 marks a new, leaner phase - more focused, more potent. ZEALE, meanwhile, arrives with the mic skill to match. A genre-fluid artist with serious live credentials, he’s as comfortable at Coachella or ACL as he is threading lines through dark-room grooves.

Together, they’ve locked into something that hits hard without shouting. Functional, weird, and low-end ready. Just how we like it.

For this UndrCtrl guest mix, Moneyjaw digs deep into the crate - pulling together a no-nonsense, club-forward set that mirrors the DNA of the new release. It’s got that off-centre swing, heat on the drums, and groove you can’t shake.

For Episode 38 of UndrCtrl, we’re joined by BL SUEDE, artist, label head and cultural agitator flying the flag for house music with purpose.

His latest release, “Fire (Kevin Saunderson, Dantiez E Dancer Detroit Dub)”, is more than a remix. It is a heavy blend of legacy, lineage and intent. Detroit techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson and his son Dantiez bring weight and vision to the rework, linking generations and cities through groove and resistance.

The original track, co-produced with Mark Cole, opens with the voice of Dr Cornel West and takes cues from James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time”. The message is clear. The music is built to move bodies and minds.

That same duality runs through this guest mix. It is deep and focused. Rich in rhythm, thick with soul. From the poetic pulse of OVEOUS and the warmth of Luis Radio to late-night rollers by Julio Bashmore and Catz’ n Dogz, this set tells a story without shouting.

Along the way, BL SUEDE weaves in his own work, from the sunlit throb of “Glam Life” to the full-circle energy of “For Your Love”.

The latest UndrCtrl mix comes courtesy of Norwegian DJ and producer BAKKIS, who delivers a deep, groove-driven session featuring rolling rhythms and stripped-back energy.

Built around a spoken-word vocal that echoes the candid tone of The Streets, the track strikes a balance between raw emotion and a locked-in house groove. ‘H.P.S.’ follows Okada Records’ debut release ‘Inna Fire’ — a percussive, low-slung cut that drew early support from Jamie Jones, MK, Claptone, and Marco Carola. With just two tracks released, the label is already defining a focused sound rooted in minimalism and instinct.

Outside of Okada, BAKKIS has a history of releases on labels like Dumb Safari and is also one of the minds behind R-Trybe, the collaborative label and platform founded with Huxley and Ramin Rezaie. R-Trybe exists to support DJs, producers, and vocalists with resources, opportunities, and a space to release music outside of the traditional system.

This UndrCtrl mix reflects that collaborative mindset. It’s a tight and confident ride, spotlighting R-Trybe talent alongside cuts from Solid Grooves, Poker Flat, Cécille Records, and more.

Episode 40 of UndrCtrl lands with Joey London Style, a North London talent making noise from Manchester to Miami.

His “Strange Dream” EP dropped recently on Cuttin’ Headz, marking his debut for The Martinez Brothers’ label. It is a strong statement. Hypnotic, late-night rollers built for deep systems and sweaty rooms. Joey’s style sits right in the pocket. Gritty but groovy, minimal but never flat. Previous outings on Deeperfect and Take Notes earned him support from Marco Carola, Jamie Jones and Michael Bibi. This latest release puts him front and centre.

Following a standout release on SOSA’s COCO imprint last month, Norwegian DJ and producer Casper Schulz now joins the UndrCtrl mix series for edition 041. A rising name within the European minimal and tech house scene, Schulz has been shaping his sound, focusing on subtle builds, rolling drums, and tight percussion. His latest EP, released on June 6th, featured two tracks: the warped, club-ready ‘Absurdity’ and the deeper, more atmospheric ‘He Wanted To Fly’. Both showcased his growing range and eye for the dancefloor.

Lloyd Barwood joins Undrtone with an exclusive guest mix celebrating his new 'Chain of Thoughts' EP on Sasha’s iconic label, Last Night On Earth.

Across an hour of deep, progressive and melodic sounds, Lloyd showcases his storytelling approach to DJing -  weaving through atmospheric grooves, hypnotic rhythms and three new IDs, including tracks from his latest EP.
