2014 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies. This project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, marks this anniversary by reflecting on the legacies of the Centre. 

Using innovative teaching and research methods and often adopting a politicised engagement with subjects, the Centre was one of the first academic bodies to take ‘mass’ culture – pop music, television programmes, fashions – seriously. 

By creating an archive of Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies material, as well as staging an exhibition and conference to mark the 50th anniversary, this project seeks to learn more about the Centre’s research and practices and the way it helped to shape the development of an international discipline.

Paul Gilroy is known as a path-breaking scholar and historian of the music of the Black Atlantic diaspora, as a commentator on the politics of race, nation and racism in the UK, and as an archaeologist of the literary and cultural lives of the African diaspora. According to the US Journal of Blacks in Higher Education he has been consistently among the most frequently cited black scholars in the humanities and social sciences. His keynote address at the Werkstatt der Kulturen (Berlin) on the occasion of the Postcolonial Justice conference organized by Potsdam University on May, 30th 2014 is entitled ‘The Struggle against Racism in Britain (1976-2012): Its Implications for Justice and Democracy.’

In 2001 I sat down to interview poet Robert Creeley ahead of a performance at the Knitting Factory in New York City. We spoke about a lot of things, but the conversation kept coming back to jazz music and how it relates to poetry. Creeley was one of the longest surviving poets from the Beat Generation. He passed away in 2005, but this interview offers a glimpse into how he viewed his role as a writer. The finished interview aired on the "Society of Underground Poets (SoUP) Radio hosted by Troy Teegarden and produced at WRVG-World Radio.

Isabel Mukonyora has followed and studied a religious movement of her Shona people, the Masowe Apostles, that embraces Christian tradition while addressing the drama of African life and history. The founder of this movement, Johane Masowe, emphasized an ancient Jewish and Christian pull to the wilderness. Through her stories we explore modern African spirituality, diaspora, and finding meaning, as Mukonyora says, "in the margins."

In this interview, 2019 Holberg Prize Laureate Paul Gilroy discusses a range of topics, including his childhood and adolesence in post-colonial Britain, his research on race and identity, and how to best meet the threats posed by neo-fascism and the climate crisis. 

Paul Gilroy is Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Centre for the Study of Race and Racism at UCL. Interviewer is Bjørn Enge Bertelsen, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Bergen. The interview was recorded on 3 June, 2019.

Dick Hebdige was at the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in the 1970s, and worked on issues relating to the media, popular culture and critical theory. He has since published several works, including Subculture: The Meaning of Style (1979) which was based on his research at the Centre. He is currently Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Paul Gilroy completed his PhD at the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in 1986. He worked on race and culture, co-authored The Empire Strikes Back: Race and Racism in 1970s Britain (1982) during his time there, and subsequently published There Ain't no Black in the Union Jack (1987) based on his thesis. He is currently Professor of American and English Literature at King's College London.
