In recent years, development efforts have been set back by long-standing obstacles made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflicts, climate change, rising debt, lack of digital access and growing inequalities.
Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation  (UNOSSC) says there’s an urgent need to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals – only 17 per cent of which are on track.
In pursuit of that, more than 120 Member States gathered this week at UN headquarters in New York to discuss how South-South and triangular partnerships can boost future sustainable development for all.
 UN News’s Emma Trager-Lewis sat down with Ms. Al-Khatib and began by asking her to explain what South-South collaboration means in practice.

According to the UN, many frontline Ukrainian families are at risk of missing critical planting and harvesting windows.

The number of Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad has more than tripled in just over two years. Chad had hosted around 400,000 Sudanese refugees before April 2023 when war erupted — a number that has now surged to over 1.2 million, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) warned on Tuesday. 
 
More than seven in 10 refugees have reported serious human rights violations — "physical and sexual violence, arbitrary detention, forced recruitment,” said Principal Situation Coordinator, Dossou Patrice Ahouansou.
 
Briefing journalists from Amdjarass near Sudan's border with Chad, he described the situation as “a crisis of humanity”. Based on interviews with 6,810 newly arrived refugees, he said that six out of 10 reported being separated from their family members.

Reports that more Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in a new deadly incident involving the US and Israel-run aid hub early on Tuesday must be investigated promptly and independently, UN human rights chief Volker Türk has insisted.

Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, OHCHR, highlighted the High Commissioner’s call for a prompt, independent investigation into dozens of reported killings in southern Gaza since the new aid hub "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" opened on 27 May.

“I think there's so much which has happened in the past three days apart from the tragic circumstances of human beings trying to gather food to survive and then being killed in the process,” he told journalists in Geneva. “[Gazans] are being forced to walk to these centres and now they're terrified. Probably they go there and they're thinking, ‘Am I going to get food or am I going to get shot?’”
