Since the adoption of Resolution 1701, UNIFIL has implemented many projects aimed at empowering women and building their capacities so they can be strong and effective voices in their communities. With the ongoing exchanges of fire along the Blue Line now entering their eleventh month, initiatives like these are more crucial than ever, especially for women who have been displaced from their home villages. Recently, UNIFIL outfitted the sewing and embroidery vocational training room at the Imam Sadr Foundation with necessary machines and equipment.

The sudden withdrawal of funding for HIV programmes in several African countries is causing serious disruptions to life-saving services, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned this week, urging global leaders to act swiftly to protect hard-won progress.

“For over two decades, sustained investments have led to groundbreaking advances in treatment, prevention and care for millions of people. We cannot let that progress slip away,” Dr. Tedros said.

Speaking at the 13th IAS Conference on HIV Science in Kigali, Rwanda, he announced the release of new WHO guidelines on long-acting injectable HIV prevention using lenacapavir, as well as injectable antiretroviral treatments—calling them “game changing innovations” that must be made accessible to those who need them most.

“But these powerful medicines are only useful if we can get them to the people who need them,” he stressed, underlining the importance of maintaining strong health systems and services.

“Health is not a luxury for some, but a right for all,” he concluded.

Relentless missile and drone strikes by Russian forces have killed and injured hundreds of civilians in Ukraine this month, continuing a devastating pattern of attacks far from the frontlines.
According to the UN human rights office, OHCHR, at least 139 civilians have been killed and 791 injured so far in July alone.

“The devastating physical and psychological impact on civilians of repeated attacks in this and other conflicts cannot be captured by numbers alone,” said OHCHR spokesperson Liz Throssell on Tuesday.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) meanwhile has verified 2,504 attacks on health facilities and personnel in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation on 24 February 2022.

“This means more than two attacks every day…Healthcare is not a safe place for patients and healthcare workers,” said Dr. Jarno Habicht, WHO Representative in Ukraine.

Collective action can take many forms – cooperatives, for example. But for the millions of youth engaged in agrifood systems, sometimes Instagram or TikTok is more effective.

Of the 1.3 billion people aged 15 to 24, 44 per cent rely on agrifood systems for employment. But their unique challenges are not always represented, and their voices are not always heard. This is why collective action is so important. 

A recent report on youth in agrifood systems went further than just encouraging collective action – it actually consulted youth stakeholders in the editing of the report, as Lauren Phillips, a deputy director at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), told UN News’s Naima Sawaya – as the UN’s top political forum on sustainable development continues.

Youth seize the day in new food production report

Aquatic food systems are vital to ensuring food security, supporting livelihoods, and sustaining rural economies. In recent years, global fisheries and aquaculture production has reached record levels—but so have the challenges. Climate change, environmental degradation, and competition for water resources continue to strain this essential sector.

This episode explores how the FISHCap project—implemented under the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programmes from 2020 to 2024—has supported sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture in Central Asia, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye. The project aimed to build institutional, technical, and scientific capacities for the management of inland aquaculture and fisheries resources across the region.

Listeners will hear perspectives from key stakeholders and a local beneficiary, sharing how the project contributed to more resilient aquatic food systems in line with FAO’s Blue Transformation initiative.

With rich field sounds and expert insights, this episode highlights a regional approach to supporting small-scale fishers and strengthening national capacities to manage inland fisheries and aquaculture more sustainably.
