Latent Variables Vol. 1 is the debut solo EP from Unit 137’s founder, Hylu. The three track record is characterised by its bass heavy foundations layered with unexpected rhythms, synth lines and samples. Expertly crafted percussion fill the tracks, providing constantly shifting sounds and textures. Undefined by one genre, ‘Latent Variables Vol. 1’ draws influences from across the electronic scene: dub, hip-hop, jungle and experimental can all be heard in this release. Hylu’s debut EP shows the full force of his production skills, taking him out of his usual role as ‘producer for vocalist’ and letting his own electronic style flourish.

The opening track of the EP and lead single, Zaf, builds slowly, interspersing deep dub baselines, catchy riffs and jungle rhythms. Hylu never rests for long on one sound, constantly sonically experimenting; a single filled with the unexpected.

The EP came into being through a collaborative experiment between Hylu and the visual artist Latent Variables. The pair decided to write together, sending visuals and music back and forth, with the intention of creating short animations with sound. They set parameters to the experiment; they chose the tempos of 90bpm, 120bpm and 150bpm as this would mean - when using the frame rate of 25fps and within a certain amount of bars and frames - that the videos and music would end at 60 seconds. The resulting short animations became the framework for Hylu to develop his EP.

BIO : ‘Sleepy Time Ghost’, aka Harry Metcalfe is a London based music producer
working out of Unit 137 studio in Lewisham, South East London. He specialises in
Reggae and Dub, with a healthy dose of Jungle, Dancehall and Hip Hop..
His prolific output spanning the past decade is peppered with features from
vocalists including; Congo Natty, Daddy Freddy, Logic, Macka B, Rodney P, Ras
Demo and an array of world-class instrumentalists and co-producers. His releases
are out on labels including Tru Thoughts, Nice Up!, Unit 137 and Congo Natty
Bass.
His methods for writing with these collaborators are intuitive and personalised to
bring the best out of each artist. The only thing that is a constant is his
unmistakably relaxed studio environment, synonymous with the name Sleepy
Time Ghost.
His upcoming projects incorporate his experiences in London and more recently
Jamaica, the insight gained from countless live performances at music events,
dances, raves and festivals in a spectrum of settings from Somerset House to
Boomtown Fair. He plans to release a string of fresh material in conjunction with
the launch of his own label ‘Bun Dem Out records’. These releases include a
Daddy Freddy album, a Devon Morgan album, an ep with logic (peoples army)
aswell as several tracks he’s produced for Spragga Benz’s new album.

Deemas J, Hylu and the 137 Allstars deliver a ska-influenced one-drop track with a hint of dub poetry to commemorate Muhammad Ali, which is the second single from the debut Unit 137 album. The song highlights key moments of Ali’s life from when he started boxing as a child, to his fight with Joe Frasier, right up to the ‘Rumble In The Jungle’ with George Forman.
