I live in San Francisco, and in fact my apartment is just three blocks from the War Memorial, built ironically to remember the First World War, but brought to serve the cause of peace in 1945. It is a stolid but elegant building of Beaux Arts style, and I am always filled with a sad pride that my city was the cradle of a centuries-old dream, articulated by Kant and still made elusive by no less than six current conflicts today, in 2024. But the hope of peace and the faith of most people now alive in universal justice and freedom clearly will not fade. I send my solidarity to all good-willed, big-hearted, open-minded citizens of the entire world.
