I think we are in spring now - it is sometimes difficult to tell. This is an improvisation with strings, soprano sax and a mix of other things that I can't remember as I made this a week ago.

Sliding Into Spring

There is an odd barking sound in this that inspired the track title. All improvised with mostly Soundpaint plugins.

On a journey home by rail from Perth, I decided to film some of the countryside in the hope that it might provide some imagery for a yet to be recorded soundtrack. I recorded the video clips yesterday (13-Apr-24), recorded the audio this afternoon (14-Spr-24) and created the video tonight. It's not going to win any prizes, but I enjoyed the process.

Journey Home

This was recorded quickly using Soundpaint's Guitar Ambiences, PR-S Clean Guitar and Adastra Chamber Strings. Recorded in two takes: one for the guitar and one for the strings.

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready for The Arrythmic Dance Contest...
... or better still, sit down and marvel at the other dancers trying to keep up.
This, of course, is entirely bogus. This track is a combination of a variety of Soundpaint's Adastra strings, all trying not to play together.

Soundpaint has just released Dunescape 2.0, an update to the earlier version, so I had to try it out. With the exception of the soprano sax, all sounds are taken from Dunescape 2.0.

My keyboard (Novation Launchkey 61 Mk2) has 16 pads in addition to the keyboard. I used them throughout in conjunction with the keyboard for this track. The end result sounded like some ne'erdowells up to no good.

Sneaky Bastards

I have a lot of plugins that I don't often use, such as Addictive Drums and Addictive Keys and thought I should give them a try out. I recorded the drum track first and considered stopping with that, but decided to record the piano. I then selected 5 Soundpaint virtual instruments (Adastra Chamber Strings; Baritone Sax; Clarinet; Tenor Sax; Soprano Sax) and recorded all five in a single take. Next I added the double bass to anchor the track as the drums don't give you much of a clue. Finally, I added the NI Kontakt Muted Trumpet to finish the track. A quick mix, master and Bob's your uncle.
The image reminds me of being a very young child in Greenock in the 1950s.The evidence of WWII was all around: bombed buildings still had not been demolished. Me and some of the other kids in the street used to climb into abandoned tenement buildings or play in the bomb craters in the hills. Fortunately, I had shoes.

No Shoes Blues

I recorded this track this morning (25-Apr-24) using only Soundpaint plugins. I had the track ready, but felt there was something missing, so I added the loud sound to the start. This gave me a mental image of someone arriving back from a tour of duty in some foreign land and gave me the title: Homecoming.

A little musical story in four parts:
• 1 - The Basstard comes knocking
• 2 - The Basstard is welcomed with open arms
• 3 - The family jewels are missing
• 4 - The Basstard is banished

The Basstard in question is Soundpaint's Basstard 2.0: a deconstructed double bass. This piece started out as a test of some of the Basstard's sounds, that then was expanded to this four part extravaganza.
All sounds are Sounpaint plugins with the exception of the Native Instruments' Stradavari violin.

 UNITOPIA - (yu-nih-to-pi-E): meaning living together as one in a place of ideal perfection especially in law, government and social conditions.

Unitopia is a musical adventure comprising the vocal/song writing skill of Mark Trueack, the production/song writing/keyboard/engineering & vocal skill of Sean Timms, the guitar & vocal prowess of Matt Williams, the bass and vocal talents of Craig Kelly and the combined drum/percussion batteries of David Hopgood and Tim Irrgang.

Unitopia endeavors to draw from the heart and soul of the listener thought provoking topics such as environmental awareness, political and social upheaval, media misrepresentation, the hectic pace of life and human relationships in a positive and uplifting light. Using progressive rock as a framework, Unitopia’s music includes elements of world, classical, jazz, heavy rock and groove.

In Oct 2005, Unitopia independently launched ‘More Than a Dream’ to a sell out audience at The Cavern Club, Adelaide and shortly thereafter supported Aussie icon Daryl Braithwaite. Another highlight was performing at the Norwood Food and Wine Festival.

In March 2006, Canadian label Unicorn Records re-released ‘More Than a Dream’ internationally. This pressing and distribution deal introduced Unitopia to the ever increasing world progressive rock market.

In August 2008, Unitopia signed a 3 album deal with InsideOut Music, the leading progressive rock/metal record company in the world.

On November 18th, 2008, InsideOut Music, Germany released Unitopia’s 2nd CD, ‘The Garden’ internationally to critical acclaim. A double CD with 15 tracks and over 100 minutes of music, ‘The Garden’ has firmly established Unitopia as one of the premiere progressive rock bands in the world. 

Sadly, Shireen had to leave the band for personal reasons in late 2009, so Unitopia have secured the awesome bass talents of virtuoso Craig Kelly and added the soulful sax work of Ian Ritchie.

As a band known for supporting worthy causes, Unitopia have allowed the use of their song "Still Here" for the "Songs for Haiti" double CD and "There's a Place" for the compilation "Stomp out Cancer". They also donated part proceeds from ticket sales of their recent concert in Adelaide to the Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Unitopia have just completed recording and mastering their 3rd album titled "Artificial". It is a 10 track concept album based on the themes of artificial intelligence, design and behavior, consolidating Unitopia's position as one of the most exciting progressive rock acts to emerge in the last 10 years.

"Artificial" will be released world-wide through InsideOut in May 2010.  

They have  been on a European tour in October of this year which was very successful and now looking forward the new one in 2012.
