Last Sunday we began an exploration to better understand the relationships and dynamics in the group that formed with Jesus as the central force.  This group was a spiritual school whose purpose was to transform those within it and those who came into contact with it in the general population. The makeup of the school consisted of Jesus as Teacher (Rabbi), twelve designated messengers (Apostles), and those who directly followed Jesus as students (Disciples).   Jesus gave direct instruction in the form of teaching principles of living consciously.  Examples of this can be found in what is known as The Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5, 6, & 7).  There were also less direct teachings through various parables and sayings, as well as indirect teaching by example and demonstration.  Perhaps the most powerful transformer of the followers and students was being in the force field of the presence of the Teacher.  The teaching assisted the students through the following three stages of transformation:
1) Awakening (alertness to the present)
2) Dying to the acquired or conditioned self (surrendering)
3) Rebirth (embodying ones True Self).
This Sunday we will further acquaint ourselves with how all of this is not just an historical event in the past, but a present time reality to be entered into.

More School Work (Rev. Bill Williams, 9/12/21)

This Sunday we continue to delve into the workings of the School that was established by Jesus.  Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, was asked to define Unity.  He began his answer by saying, “Unity is a link in the great educational movement inaugurated by Jesus Christ…”  Since the founding of Unity it has been common to hear the participants in services and classes referred to as students, particularly in the early days and even up until fairly recently.  What is it like to be in this School, to be a student in a school with a transcendental point of view?

A Transcendental Point of View (Rev. Bill Williams, 9/19/21)

The narrative depicting Jesus’ work as given in the Gospel of John begins with an account of the supernatural transformation of water into wine that we are all familiar with.  What is the significance of this incident being the first attention-getting act of his ministry?  How does it tie into the teachings that follow, and what understanding does it lay the groundwork for?  What is the universal principle exemplified by this act?

There is a thread weaving throughout the transformational teaching of Jesus reiterating the idea of turning the lower into the higher.  Last Sunday we looked at this pattern as illustrated by the story of turning water into wine.  All beliefs, perceptions, and experiences of life that are lower and separating in their nature are fear-based and result in ever increasing suffering.  We can attempt to defeat our fears one-by-one or we can see if it is possible to meet life from a new, higher baseline of thinking, perceiving, and being that connects rather than separates.  Let’s explore how this might be made a reality in our lives.

The Defeat of Fear (Rev. Bill Williams, 10/3/21)

The disciples were initiates with access to different levels of understanding about who they really were.  Jesus guided them into a new awareness of how they could turn all the various life circumstances and events into the energy necessary for a change in level of being.  We will continue this Sunday to explore the nature of some of the instructions in the Gospel narrative that we can use as a guide for a change in our own realization of who we really are.

Instructions in the Kingdom of Heaven (Rev. Bill Williams, 10/10/21)

More than likely you have made a decision at some point to approach a difficult life situation differently after what you had been doing wasn't working out well.  You had a change of mind about the well-worn approach, but for some reason, the old way of doing things may have crept back into control of your experience. Is this a familiar pattern for you? If so, perhaps you not only need a change of mind, but also a change of heart. Let’s see if we can find some helpful ways to bring about real and lasting change; a complete attitude overhaul.

It's an Attitude Thing (Rev. Bill Williams, 10/17/21)

Among all the sayings of Jesus we find recorded in the Gospels, there is one that if heard and understood in the right way, encapsulates the direction and purpose of our spiritual work.  He said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Who doesn’t long for peace and happiness in this lifetime? Maybe the possibility seems far away. Let’s see if we can discover how peace and good cheer is more accessible than most think is possible.

An Overcoming (Rev. Bill Williams, 10/24/21)

We will gather this Sunday on the grounds at the picnic tables near the Fellowship Hall for a special healing and renewal service.  Before our community can move forward with clarity and on a firm foundation, we must first acknowledge and be lovingly present with the feeling of loss.  Supporting one another in this experience is what will strengthen the bonds needed to move our community through the creative steps that must follow.  We will come together on our beautiful grounds that have been the setting for an amazing spiritual journey of the community we cherish deeply. It will be the beginning of the first step into the next phase of the continuation of that journey.  Bring a lawn chair, a warm sweater, and an open heart and together we will see through the haze of any sense of loss into what we truly have that is even greater.

You have often heard it said that life is a journey. And it sure seems that’s what it is. There are twists and turns, and bends in the road that reveal shocks and surprises. There is also a rather cynical saying that life is hard, then you die. What if there is another way to not only see, but to experience, life as a guided tour; that life is not a grind, but a revelation. Each event and encounter is encapsulated information revealing a little more of what the tour is all about. It doesn’t get harder. It becomes easier to take life in a new and expansive way. We’ll call it the Easy Jesus Tour. You’re invited to get on board.

It can sometimes seem as if we’re part of random happenings that can knock us off our feet with no warning. The feeling of ‘life out of control’ is what many of us try so very hard to avoid. Indeed, the unpredictable nature of the world can tempt us to do everything we can think of to try to control events and outcomes. The Easy Jesus Tour is not about learning how to control life events, but how to recognize what is real and what is false in and around them. It is about knowing that all the events and circumstances are not destinations; they are places along the tour. This Sunday we will take a look at the itinerary and learn more about where we have been in a way that clarifies where we are going.

The Gnostic Gospel of Thomas is deemed by many Biblical scholars to be worthy of standing beside the more familiar four gospels in the New Testament. In this class, we will conduct a metaphysical exploration of the 114 sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas.

How difficult is it to be filled with joy or to be in a state of gratitude when life around you has gone awry? It’s hard to be a peaceful presence while identified with the duties and demands of the day and feeling as if life has closed in on you. We can find scattered throughout the Gospels clues about one of the primary exhibits on the Easy Jesus Tour, namely, the transformation of the contracting darkness felt as negative and separating emotions into the expanding lightness of being experienced as what we are calling the Seven Sacred Emotions. As always, the guide on our tour is the Spirit of Truth. We will discover together if we can learn to hear the Voice of the Guide.

The Easy Jesus Tour: Part 3, The Seven Sacred Emotions (Rev. Bill Williams, 11/28/21)

Last Sunday we introduced the idea that our sense of who we are in a given moment, our sense of self, is experienced through our feeling or emotional nature. It is through the clear and unconditional felt sense of self that we connect most directly with who we are as a spiritual being, not just a body or as thoughts about God or Spirit. Negatively identified emotions are impediments to connecting with the higher, less cluttered dimensions of being we’re calling our Sacred Emotions. The demonstrations of Jesus that appear to be miraculous could be seen in a new way if they are understood to be natural and easy expressions of these Sacred Emotions. This Sunday we will look at Jesus’ teachings through the lens of understanding that he was offering keys to unlocking the presence and power of the Sacred Emotions as the essence of who we are.

The Easy Jesus Tour: Part 4, Accessing the Sacred Emotions (Rev. Bill Williams, 12/5/21)

The Christmas story is expressed in many ways; caroling, lights, colors, smells, children’s laughter, solemn ritual, family gatherings, meals and parties, parades, and giving of gifts. The original telling of the birth of Jesus is found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke as a kind of prologue to the narrative of his ministry. The Nativity story sounds certain notes, resounding clearly in hearts attuned to the possibility of a new direction in the course of human experience and expression. Or, maybe it is a kind of cosmic course correction in this obscure corner of the Universe we currently call home. If we can be still enough in the midst of the clatter and clamor, perhaps we can touch what it is about this yearly Birth Day celebration that draws us into a different place within us than the everyday ordinary; a reality that is always Peace, Joy, and Love. Join in as we open up the gift of the Christmas story.

A New Christmas Story (Rev. Bill Williams, 12/12/21)

As we return to our exploration of the "Easy Jesus Tour", let’s see if we can connect a little more consciously with some ways we can navigate life that enhances the potential for the realization of who we are created to be. One of those ways is by becoming more attuned to what may be called “the prompting of Spirit”. In the Gospel of John, chapter 16, it is reported that Jesus talked about the need for him as a physical presence to go away. It can be understood that the disciples could not take the next step in their spiritual development unless he did go away. They would then have the opportunity to grow in that part of themselves that could have ever-present access to what Jesus called, "the Spirit of Truth which would guide them in all things.” What if you could have a personalized tour guide to take you through all the many twists and turns of life? That may be what he was pointing out to the disciples and to you and me.

A Phoenix like creature, known by different names, is depicted in diverse cultural myths. It is usually a bird of brilliant plumage, reflecting the sun. Another theme in common throughout the various cultures is longevity of life and rebirth or resurrection. This is often connected to the relationship the Phoenix has with the sun. Why would ancient cultures from the far east to Persia to the Mediterranean region to the Americas have similar ideas embedded in their consciousness? It is almost as if human beings have been created with an innate connection to a deep realization of eternal renewal. The annual global celebration of a new year is an outpouring of what the possibility of renewal feels like individually and collectively. Let’s explore the re-emergence of this sense of who we are on this first Sunday of the New Year.

Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! John 4:35b

The Sufi mystic, Rumi, said, “(T)here is a field, I will meet you there.” Jesus made numerous references to something he called the kingdom or heaven, seemingly pointing to a kind of spiritual field of infinite possibilities. Physicists have searched for a Unified Field Theory since the early 20th century. Do the various religious traditions have something fundamentally in common that is also being delved into by modern science? How would I be affected by knowing ‘there is a field’ where we meet?

“And truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, that also which this woman has done shall be spoken of in memory of her.” (Mark 14:9)

 Which disciple did Jesus say this about? It has not been readily accepted by the Christian leaders and teachers during the last two millennia that a woman was perhaps Jesus’ closest disciple. Mary Magdalene is a bit of a mystery character in the Gospel narrative, but one that merits a closer look to see what about her can expand our understanding of our own spiritual journey. In this online Zoom class we will delve into this mystery. The primary resource book we will use is The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, by Jean-Yves LeLoup. It is available from Amazon. The book is based on the papyrus fragment discovered in the Nag Hammadi find called “The Gospel of Mary”. This class will endeavor to unearth a new understanding in each of our class participants.

A familiar plot line in the movies is one where the protagonist has amnesia and does not remember who he or she is. The quest to rediscover the lost identity then ensues. The idea being conveyed is that without a story to provide an identity, no one knows who they are. Our personal story is like a database that we refer to for answers to all sorts of life questions; it’s a kind of self-referral we have that tells us who and where we are along our lifeline. Our story can be a blessing or a curse, so to speak. We get useful information from our story, but we can also feel like we are burdened by our story. What is the truth about the story we tell?

This Sunday begins a series in which we explore and deepen our understanding of what the heart of Unity really is. This journey is not about the history of an organization, a religion, or a movement. It is an attempt to understand the universal nature of unity itself. Merriam-Webster says, “The meaning of UNITY is the quality or state of not being multiple : oneness.”  This definition says unity is a state of being. A state of being is an innate or inherent quality of who you are, who I am. This series will seek to discover how the experience and expression of this already present, yet often unrealized truth might shine forth in you and me. Thus, true unity is realized.

Realizing Unity, Part 1: "True Rest" (Rev. Bill Williams, 11/13/22)

Continuing our exploration of what it means to realize unity as our true state of being, this Sunday we will attempt to get in touch with how our sense of self is so often misplaced. The upsets, unhappiness, stress, and suffering we experience in life naturally follow the fallacy of identifying and living as who we are not, rather than who we really are. The correction of this fundamental error is what we call our spiritual journey. Different religions and traditions describe this error in different ways and prescribe a variety of solutions. Fundamental Christianity uses the term "original sin". In Unity we call it "error thought".  Samsara is what Hinduism and Buddhism name it. Other traditions have their own version of this universal human condition of the experience of our unrealized wholeness. By whatever name it is given, this conditioning of our true Self is not in our way; it is the Way to realizing our Wholeness.

Realizing Unity, Part 2: "No Such Separate Self" (Rev. Bill Williams, 11/20/22)

Continuing our exploration of what it means to realize unity as our true state of being, this Sunday we will seek to understand how the mind can either reveal or obscure the oneness that is our true nature. Charles Fillmore put a great emphasis on getting to know the mind and its functions, particularly thoughts. As a matter of fact, Jesus did as well. His teachings about "take no thought for tomorrow", "judge not", and many others, were a way to train the powers of focus and attention; a way to clarify and unify the mind. We have been given an amazing instrument to use. The thing is, human beings are quite often unconsciously used by the mind, rather than consciously use the mind to realize that which is greater, which is transcendent to the mind. Join us as we continue on our path of ‘"Realizing Unity".

Realizing Unity, Part 3: "A Unified Mind" (Rev. Bill Williams, 11/27/22)

We live in a world with which we engage diversity of every sort. Some activities and people in the world appear to be pleasant and just what we would prefer. Then there are the "others". These people and conditions  are experienced as disagreeable and definitely not preferable or conducive to what we may judge to be good. After living for a while in such a diverse world, we may arrive at the conclusion that we do not have the power to change or control the world of appearances all around us. So, what are we to do? How do we reconcile the concept of fundamental Goodness being the ground of everything, with the experience of everyday life seeming to be anything but goodness and peace itself? Join in as we expand our spiritual practice of mediating the opposites in our life experience.

Every day, in so many ways, we are being called forth to participate in deeper, more meaningful ways with others and therefore within ourselves. Life is like an open hand ready to receive the gifts we are willing to offer. Life is also like a mirror, reflecting back to us the love we are willing to share. Every day we are invited to express ourselves in ways that allow us to be channels of compassion, peace, and joy. How do we hear that invitation and respond? This Sunday we will explore this invitation and an example found in a traditional Christmas song that models how we could courageously answer that call.

We are continuing with a deeper dive into Unity’s Statement of Being that we affirm at the beginning of each Sunday’s service. This statement is not just another affirmation. It is a way to state the Principle from which all of our affirmations of Truth are derived.  Therefore, this statement is not an abstract concept or a philosophical idea, but the basis for harmonious and balanced living. Perhaps, even more than that, it is the guiding Principle to the realization of who we really are. Join us in this next step of spiritual discovery.

So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.” Mark 10:18 (NKJV)

The ordinary experience of life is filled with ups and downs, with light and shadows. The dynamics of life is perceived through our senses and we can often be challenged by what the senses reveal as our current reality. It can be very difficult to experience all of life as good. How, then, are we to experience and practice the concept of the omnipresence of Good as stated in Unity’s foundational principle. This principle can be summed up as “There is only One Presence, we are one with the One Presence, and that One Presence is Good.” Join us as we continue on this inner journey of discovery and realization.

The One You Are: Part 3 (Rev. Bill Williams, 12/10/23)

The Christmas season touches each of us uniquely. The ways we are touched range from exuberant Joy to deep quiet reverence. How we are touched by, and experience, the holidays (Holy Days) informs our understanding of the Christmas story. Embedded in each of the various symbols, characters, and events depicted in the narrative are gifts to be opened in our awareness. It is up to each of us to recognize the value of our particular gift and how it affects our journey of birthing the Christ awareness. A singular force that the opening of each gift reveals is Gratitude. As we grow spiritually, we begin to recognize that Gratitude is not an emotion we experience from a gift we get, but rather the power to transform any condition, situation, circumstance, or event into a gift. This power can be called “Gratitudinal Awareness”. Let’s open this powerful gift together.

Come and experience our unique version of Unity’s Candlelight Service in preparation for a joyous Christmas. The birth of Jesus as celebrated throughout Christendom points to the emergence of new Light in the heart of humanity. Each year we renew and grow our understanding of the impact this Light has in each individual’s spiritual journey. Unity’s founder, Charles Fillmore, shared his understanding of the qualities or powers in each of us to be realized or brought to Light as we awaken to our true nature, the Christ. This Sunday we will symbolically bring the Light to each of our primary spiritual powers as we celebrate our Candlelight Service. Join us in Holy Company as we celebrate this Christmas together.

You can experience our traditional New Year’s Eve Burning Bowl and White Stone Ceremony this year as part of the 11:00 service. Unity does not have many rituals, but these two ceremonies are wonderful activities to clear out the residue from the year that’s now coming to a close, and to help us open our minds and hearts for spiritual growth in the upcoming year. "Three Most Important New Year's Resolutions to Make on a Spiritual Path" Theresa Krieger, 12/29/2024

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” He also said, “You are the light of the world.” In both instances, he was reminding us of our true nature as beings of love and goodness. When we notice the suffering of others, or when we’re facing challenges of our own, we may lose sight of this truth. Identifying with and dwelling on our worries, upsets, and fears can trap us in a prison made of thoughts. What do we do when we’re attached to a habit of thinking that causes us to forget who we are? The Buddha proclaimed that there can be an end to suffering. He also said that no one should accept his words just because he was the Buddha. He taught students to come and see for themselves, testing the teachings through mindfulness, contemplation, and ethical conduct. Jesus, the Buddha, and other enlightened teachers understood the nature of human beings and the nature of suffering. Together let’s see if their lessons can show us the way to end our suffering and to experience peace and joy for ourselves.

I’m excited to share the Mastermind Principle – a powerful prayer method first shared by the late Unity minister, Rev. Jack Boland.  Rev. Julie Keen brought it to Unity of Tallahassee in 1988.  Through this Principle, you combine your own faith and strength with that of at least one other person as well as that of your Higher Power, God, the Mastermind! This prayer process is based on the ancient principle that “If two of you agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” Matthew 18: 19-20. 
 
We will learn the principles and share the power of this way of praying – and yes, there will be a handout!
