Therefore, consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them. Luke 8:18

What spiritual practices or techniques do you have to employ to become who you are? That is kind of a nonsensical question, isn’t it? You already are who you are. The thing is, we humans tend to think, act, and live as if we are someone or something other than the wholly fulfilled spiritual being we are. There is a principle that Jesus stated which was recorded four times in the three Synoptic Gospels. This gets my attention. Sunday we will focus on this key spiritual principle in Jesus’ teachings. Together, we will see how this principle can inform and enhance every thought, word, and action of the spiritual seeker.

Getting to Who You Are (Rev. Bill Williams, 8/11/24)

It can be quite difficult to hear Jesus’ teachings from a fresh and totally new point of view. Once beliefs are formed, they become the ground from which we think, hear, and see. Jesus instructed his disciples to “be careful how you hear”. That is, notice what beliefs the words you hear are being filtered through. This cautionary instruction is closely related to his admonition that we cannot recognize the Truth through preconditioned beliefs. “Turn and become as a little child,” he said. This will be an adventure in hearing some old ideas in a brand-new way.

Tidying Up Loose Ends (Rev. Bill Williams, 8/18/24)

All of Jesus’ teachings can be summed up into what has been referred to as “the Way”. Can there be such a thing as one way, yet that one way be universal? For something to be universal it must be accessible to all without limitation. That means the way is available at all times, in all places, and in all conditions. This seems like it must be something right at hand right now. Join us for this next step along the Way.

Our little church has been through a lot of transitions over the past few years.  One of our biggest transitions just happened with Rev. Bill's retirement.  We will soon be looking for a new minister and moving into a new sanctuary.  But before we move on to what's next, we need to be at peace with what is.  As I thought about how to approach this, it occurred to me to ask, "What would Myrtle (Fillmore) do?"  And the answer, of course, is to pray!  You may be aware that the Unity movement started as a prayer ministry, and there is a very specific approach to prayer that Myrtle Fillmore used and taught.  Here we will learn about the Unity way of praying and practice using it to navigate this transition for our church community.

Over 30 years ago, I read an article in a spiritual magazine where a woman said that when she was a teenager and leaving for the day, that her mother would call out, “Remember who you are!” This was in lieu of “Drive carefully,” “Look both ways,” “Be respectful of your teachers!”  In her family, this loving reminder was to remember that she was a child of God, protected, maintained, and loved by God – and that she should act like it.  This was very timely as my teenager Peter was really chafing against my concerns that he might misbehave when he was out of my sight.  So we agreed that from now on I would just say, “Remember who you are” when he left the house and that was code for “I love you, I trust your good judgment,” “I know you will behave like the child of God you are.”

Over the last many years, I continue asking myself to “Remember who you are.”  Am I identifying myself by some earthly role I play - like mother, daughter, singer, lawyer, friend, or am I first remembering Who I AM?  And how does that affect how I live in the world?

Let’s explore together, “Just who do you think you are, anyway?”  And how can we better have our actions flow from that remembrance?

And the state of the world seems to be doing everything it can to convince us that we need to be afraid. Worrying just seems to be a natural part of being human.So what are we to do? Is there a way to stop worrying that's actually paractical and doable? Can we learn to recognize the sequence of events that leads to worrying and redirect our thoughts to a more peaceful place? Let's consider these ideas and questions together and see if we can find a way that always leads to a good night's rest.

And we know that God is in everyone and everything.
