EPM Podcast 150 is all about showcasing a brand-new talent, so take a bow Alex Busby. Busby is an electronic producer who understands that music needs time and space. His is a mix that draws you in gradually before locking its laser beam onto the heart of the dancefloor. With melodic undertones playing a key role throughout the mix, Busby brings together the likes of Pye Corner Audio, Truncate, Bambounou, Otik, Octo Octa, The Exaltics, Tobias, Julianna, Matias Aguayo and his own debut tracks into a heady stew of slow-motion tech-funk. A new voice has arrived. 

Busby is an artist that tries to not fit into any specific box, utilising his traditional musical training in tandem with his electronic music obsession to create dancefloor sounds that attempt to adhere to as many tastes as possible. From industrial techno to spacey synth-pop and from complex polyrhythms to catchy melodies.  He currently runs AJ's Dance Party, a grass-roots community based in South London which celebrates local DJ talent, with small events in and around South East London (most recently at Four Quarters in Peckham) alongside a monthly radio show on Konrad Radio. He is also a freelance journalist who has written pieces for the likes of The Ransom Note and Loose Lips and as a producer is currently working on music for an independent video game project.

Ricochet has been pushing the sound of broken tech since 2007, beginning as an outlet for Lifecycle to develop less commercial fringes of the breakbeat scene. The 40 releases since have sidestepped trends, focused on deep, unexplored overlaps with electronica and techno.

Lifecycle first released in the mid '00s with vinyl on LondonBreakz, Electrofly and Loöq before setting up the label, with a quality over quantity approach that has attracted contributions from legendary producers including Si Begg, Al Tourettes, Luke Chable, Rennie Foster, Lory D, Decoder, iLS, Mesak, Ochre, Paul Blackford, Blackmass Plastics – and broken new artists such as James Shinra, Kawatin and Ion Driver.

"When starting Ricochet I wanted a similar feel to some of the great drum’n’bass labels of the time … if you saw them in a record rack it guaranteed a few things … first, the speed (back in the age of vinyl that was essential), though that’s more than just tempo – you’d have an idea of the intensity, the mood, the sonic signature … then within that framework the serious labels would let their artists absolutely hammer the boundaries … do something fresh, express themselves, overrule the label core with their personality … for Loose Lips I wanted to channel that initial seed, so I dug through the back catalogue for the most DJ-friendly stuff (lots from the early years, as later things started to get weird … more electronica, less certainty, moving away from 130bpm) and went in hard on the decks … channelled my inner junglist and got messy with the cuts … this is how I hoped people would feel comfortable mixing Ricochet, and was a pleasure to showcase our sound in that spirit … thanks for listening.:
