Banana Tree Vocal Production Notes

0:14  “I don’t have an official academic degree, but what I surely do know is the forest teaches people for free.” 

The vocals start out pretty high so they already cut through pretty well without too many effects. I added fairly heavy compression (8:1) to enhance the nuances of the lips/throat. I also added a sine wave flanger to give it the tremolo type feel. For those of you who use Ableton, the exact flanger parameters are High Pass: 138 Hz, Dry/Wet :31 percent, Delay Time: .40 ms, Feedback: .62, Envelope: 12%, LFO: 81% Sine wav, Rate: 1/12. I left the EQ flat except for boosts at 1.4 and 6 kHz. 

0:27 “Banana Tree”

The parameters here are the same as above(it’s the same take) except for the addition of some delay to give it more of a surreal feel. I also doubled the part and panned all the way to the right to build extra atmosphere.  

0:41 “Maybe I’m mistaken but the real world is whatever, its whatever that you want it to be. Feel the relaxation, life is a vacation if we all just had the courage to dream.”

This verse has the same effects as the first one except I removed the flanger  in order to give it that up close feel. I was also basically touching the microphone with my lips when I was singing and tried to portray a slightly different character for the sake of variation. The only other change is a cut in the lows because the take wasn’t as high pitched as earlier in the song. 

0:54 “Banana Tree” 
This banana tree has the same effects as the other one but it’s a different take. I also added a synth here to change things up a little bit. 

1:07 “You can say some words about the economics but I’d probably respond to you that that’s ironic cause we’ve all heard the story about the fisherman on the dock. A working man came up to him all criticizing and the fisherman ask the man what his job was. He replied: I’m just working so I finally can retire and fish.”

Here I have the highest vocal part centered and two lower harmonies panned about 20% to the left and the right. Heavy compression was added to all three parts plus the same eq as mentioned above. Any other effects would have made this part muddy. 

1:35 “Life is short, so live it good, and I’ll be right by your side. And when the going gets tough, cause sometimes it does, remember that it all will pass with time.” 

The drums go half time in the part to make it more of a breakdown. I added the flanger on the vocals again but this time its saw tooth and the high pass is at 411hz. There is also a slight ping pong delay and of course some compression. 

2:02 “Whats the definition, oh I’m on a mission to define what it means to be free. With a little intuition we’ll be in the right condition to create whatever we want to see.”

I think the alliteration is what makes this part stand out. I did some cutting on the word “Whats” as a lead in. Aside from the effects that I’ve used throughout the song, I also double this verse with the same take an octave lower. I used the pro mode (not complex pro) in ableton on the lowered take to give it that slowed down feel. I also added some overdrive and panned hard left. 

2:15 “Banana Tree”

Same effects as the second banana tree but its another take. I also warped the same take up an octave, added lots of delay and moved it over a measure.

2:29 “Now take me back to land again, yup Native Amercians, they really know how to live. I want to climb a banana tree, shout from sea to shining sea, yeah what a good good, what a good live this is.”
Again with this verse I added the octave lower effect with overdrive panned to the side. 

2:42 Final chorus but I didn’t add the banana tree vocal part because that would have been boring and honestly trashy  I used the stoppy piano part to leave room for the synths to stand out.

“I want it” is the third single from The All Canadian Soundclash and Award winning Producer & Musician Dale Murray (Hayden, Cuff The Duke, Joel Plaskett, Buck 65, Christina Martin, Matt Mays) “I want it” is a brooding yet somewhat uplifting song about never giving up on your desires and winning the race no matter what difficulties may get in your way. It’s about finally overcoming your demons and realizing it’s your time to shine so lets get this thing done! Quite fitting for the year that the world has had to endure and Andrew, Dale and Jordi experienced this all too well when trying to record this single. Since Dales studio is in Nova Scotia and the maritime provinces had their own isolation bubble where nobody was allowed to enter, Andrew being in Ontario and the others out east they were forced to find a way to record. Dale and Jordi ended up recording their parts at the Farmhouse 
Studio while Andrew recorded his parts in his home studio in Ontario, thus leading to sending audio files back and forth through email so that Dale could splice and mix the tracks together there at his home.

Just got hold of a second voice for Emvoice the voice synthesizer.  Meet Jay, their first male vocalist.  Lucy is on backing duties for this one.  Not exactly a polished track, and a duffer of a cover.  Hopefully I'll get time to address both of those things at a later date.
