Astraltopia is the third and final compilation in the Topia series, as well as the terminal release in the Astral Plane Recordings catalog. Made up of contributions from longtime APR artists and friends, Astraltopia traverses outgrowths of past label releases, novel sonic formulations and the infra-zones between and underneath extant club sounds. Accompanied by artwork from Sam Meier and mastering by Will Mitchell, the compilation follows 2012’s Heterotopia and 2015’s Psychotropia, both of which preceded the formal inauguration of Astral Plane Recordings. The 94th contribution to our GUESTMIXES series is presented by Acacia Ojea aka AKAZIE, a multimedia artist and DJ born and based in the northwest of Spain. Her activity as a music selector is mostly focused on the post-club scene, with a great interest in discourses close to deconstructed and experimental electronic music. In particular, her mixes harbor a sonic spectrum full of musical nuances with special attention to rhythmic and digital timbre exploration and percussive electronic music,  with hints of the sounds that inhabit or border the piece of land designated as the Iberian Peninsula. So far, her mixes appeared on radio stations such as Offline Meeting Point (Barcelona), Internet Public Radio (México), and Ma3azef.

With a fine arts education and music training in classical piano and traditional Galician percussion, she developed her interest in sonic arts and expanded her studies in electroacoustics and digital audio synthesis while investigating different approaches to sound production and listening practices. Her background has given her the chance to consider the sonic environment a latent stimulus within her processes of assimilation, creation, and artistic research, while also bringing her to value sound as the primary medium to understand and access the world. Over the recent years, her sonic interventions and performance have been hosted by art centers such as Contemporary Art Fair Art Madrid, Centro de Arte Sonoro de Buenos Aires, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vigo in Spain, as well as music festivals among which figure Dantz (Donostia), MMMAD (Madrid), and Sinsal (Galicia).

Today's piece is a 35-minute mixtape featuring cutting-edge tracks crafting a sound journey in the field of contemporary club and experimental, bursting digital electronics. Push the button!

PAYNOMINDTOUS GUESTMIX#94: AKAZIE

Racine uses sound to transcend the contemporary hellscape. Far from indulging in purely hedonistic escapism or nihilistic detachment, the celebrated Canadian producer confronts difficult emotions head-on, embracing tension and turbulence. Each release reformulates uncertainty into haunted soundscapes bristling with detail, weaving fractured samples, mutant melodies and glacial electronics into a hyper-real reflection of modern living. New two-track single Delirium focuses those same future-seeking sonics into Racine’s most direct – not to mention surprising – work to date.

Side A coalesces the producer’s amorphous electronics into a crystalline dancefloor workout. Soaring vocals clipped from a New Age radio broadcast glide atop ruffneck drums, with noctilucent synth pads and fizzing ambience seeping in through the cracks. Racine’s signature sense of unease and melancholy is still very much present, though here lurking in the track’s low-end and on the periphery; an overwhelming endorphin rush threatening to tip into amphetamine anxiety at any moment. Side B explodes outwards from that same sound palette, dancefloor hooks atomised into formless textures, eschewing melody and rhythm as it reaches toward even more ecstatic heights.

Delirium provides an exhilarating expansion of Racine’s soundworld, demonstrating his prowess as a producer even while moving into new contexts, and speaking to a distinct need for ecstatic release and transcendence.

Copenhagen-based DJ and producer Ingrate is ready with his debut EP ‘With A System In Mind’ out 14th of February via Copenhagen label Anyines.

Having previously roamed the club scene as Kid Antoine, this EP kicks off the moniker Ingrate, presenting a more mysterious and playful world of sonics; radcool speaker stack music, designed “with a system in mind”. The four tracks of the EP continue in the path of the only Ingrate release so far - 2018’s “Crypto Poser/The Enigma" out via Oli XL’s W-I (now Bloom) label. But it’s as if Ingrate is bringing an even quirkier funk to the club this time. Like a 2020 version of Mr. Oizo, if only a little sexier.

The connection to friend and collaborator Oli XL is clear in the sonics of the EP. Both of them masters of teasing the club - making you smile on the dancefloor. Touching on the the banalities and clichés of club music while still seeking new sound territories, the record is a slight tongue-in-cheek, but optimistic take on the dance music scene of the coming decade. Play it in the club, if you dare.

‘Imp’ takes point with it’s babbling percussion, hammering it’s beliefs firmly in steel against a backdrop of falling, redemptive pads. The jealous, hollow sounding cymbal voices of ‘Deceived’ counterpoint their own thoughts of despair. ‘Hoax’ is a sleight of hand spectacle; a svengali trick deck is conjured up and away again, as at the hand of a deception artist in the middle of a thick smoke screen. In the midst of it all, the listener’s only trustworthy companion becomes a mischievous “catch me if you can" synth; teasing, but still leading them, on their way through this world of mirages. 
The EP’s grand finale is ‘Yourself’ - a funhouse of the mind, full of blinding strobes, distorting mirrors and winking figures.

The world is strange, buckle up for the ride.
