Unknowable Sound Recordings is elated to present Tactile EP by (UNI.); something completely authentic and  transformative, beyond time and mind. Jay Robinson (UNI.) has played percussion since the early 2000's, beginning with djembe and drum circle, moving on to congas and Latin jazz, and finally, coming to the study of classical Hindustani tabla.  Tabla rhythms now form the rhythmic base of pretty much all of Jay's music, even if there isn't always tabla being played. In 2017 Jay launched a solo project using live looping and samples, steel tongue drums, flute and other percussion instruments to create a dynamic multi-instrumental sound improv experience that fuses the worlds of classical Indian music, modern sound healing and live electronics. Along with his photomanipulation pieces, Jay's intention with (UNI.) is to create an entrancing sacred space with presence, magic, sound and visual art. Touching the heart and spirit on a profoundly deep, biological, and spiritual level, Jay's music arises spontaneously based on his mood, and what melodic themes and rhythms he feels like exploring at the time. All of this interacts with the souls of the instruments, as they each have voices of their own, and speak to one another in special ways. They draw power and voice from their origins (material, crafted, land, and cultural heritage) and Jay's facilitation from the training he's had, making every recording ceremonial. Jay lives a semi-nomadic life, anywhere from the Rockies, into the Kootenays, to Vancouver Island. He draws inspiration from all traditional and psychedelic music, mysticism, plant medicine, work, and all the incredible people he encounters.

Artist Biography:

EddiBell is the music project of Norwegian producer, Torstein Horgmo, focused on the nature-inspired and organic subset of downtempo and electronic music. After nearly two decades of intention as a professional snowboarder, EddiBell has now become Torstein's outlet for personal development through the healing power of sound.

After a number of singles since 2019 and a self-released EP in 2021, EddiBell's explorations have culminated in his debut album, MEDISIN, to be released via Outtallectuals record label in December 2023.

"Interwoven" : A Journey Through Sound and Culture

We are thrilled to present "Interwoven," a 5-track collaborative EP from Iyakuh & Lo.renzo that delves into and celebrates diverse and cherished lineages of sound, woven into a cohesive musical journey.

This EP guides listeners through a dynamic spectrum, drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of India, Africa, the Hawaiian Islands, the Andean Mountains, and the Amazon Rainforest of South America.

"Interwoven" immerses you in realms of deep bass, textured beats, downtempo grooves, and tribal dance rhythms, paying homage to the incredible cultures that have deeply inspired us.

The EP features live vocals from Luana Schwengber on track 3, "Aiana," and includes nature recordings from around the world, captured by the two producers.

Lo.renzo's live instrumentation adds a unique and authentic touch, featuring fretless guitar, sarangi, ngoni, quena, cumbus saz, kalimba, and various percussions. Each track seamlessly blends these elements, creating a vibrant tapestry of sounds that honor and unify these diverse musical traditions.

This album was originally organized with the idea to build a science lab at Shree Prabhat Higher Secondary School in Dhawa, Gorkha, Nepal. Unfortunately the 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook Nepal the day after release, destroying most of Dhawa, including the school. The country needs billions in funds to recover from this tragic event and in our small way, we are redirecting our efforts through this project to create a fund for rebuilding Dhawa. PLEASE consider donating to our cause in exchange for a cutting-edge music compilation and help us restore normality to a highly vulnerable community.

Jacobus Derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. There he would hear music from Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, South America and beyond. He started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone.

He met Hanyo van Oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, 'The Jones'. Derwort was playing the sax, van Oosterom the drums. They started conducting sound experiments in Hanyo’s small cellar in the Dutch village of Krimpen aan den IJssel.

In the early eighties they made their first cassette, 'The Kallikatsou'. Hanyo started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock “The 

Kallikatsou” on the island of Patmos, Greece. Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard the sound of CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of 
water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

Back home they asked Willem Cramer to join CHI, and later Michel Banabila. They released a legendary ambient cassette, 'The Original Recordings', in 1983 which soon became a collectors item. CHI stopped in 1987 (and still now nobody knows exactly why). Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila started the world music collective 'East Meets West' in 1989. Hanyo and Jacobus kept recording ambient soundscapes.

Jacobus was working on his 'Bamboo' recordings. Hanyo recorded the first tracks for 'The Kallikatsou Experience'.  Neither album was ever released. They returned a few times together to The Kallikatsou, but there the history seems to end...

…until decades later when Astral Industries located them after a long search, inspired by Rod Modell (Deepchord). The result was the vinyl release of CHI – The Original Recordings in February 2016. The album received great reviews and sold out in a few weeks. 

This inspired Hanyo and Jacobus to work on an old plan: remixing the old bamboo recordings. Most tracks were made in the eighties before and after CHI. Original tape recordings using mainly analogue sounds, percussion, samples and (of course)bamboo flutes and manipulated clarinets. Hanyo added some new recordings and remixed the old tapes in his Numoonlab Studio in Rotterdam. The result was 'The Bamboo Recordings', a timeless collection of ambient soundscapes. 

THE CHI FACTORY is the next step of CHI into the future. It will involve many future ambient collaborations. The next release will be 'The Kallikatsou Recordings'(Astral Industries 2016 TBA). Also bringing back the original line-up of CHI for new recordings is part of the plan. Who knows what may happen next.

This winter solstice Unknowable Sound explores the celestial in her full length album, Unformed, taking us deeper into the mysteries and magic of nature and the planes of existence beyond the veil. Featuring hauntingly beautiful live percussion and flutes played by (uni.) on tracks 1, 2, and 7.. Deeply atmospheric and ethereal soundscapes are layered with trance inducing beats, nostalgic melodies, and hypnotic echoes of nature, making time stand still.
