In a flurry of melodic energy like only he can whip up, Apple Pips mainstay Arkist returns with two assured cuts that perfectly build on the strengths he has always displayed for killer production and mean hooks. While his previous turns for the label “Rendezvous” and “Fill Your Coffee” made a devastating impact when they dropped back in 2011, this new pair of tracks sees one of Bristol’s finest further broadening his sonic palette with a wild array of cues feeding into an undeniably fresh end result.

“Summer Shimmer” is a synth-heavy throwdown that rests on top of a steady-ticking arpeggio, live guitar chops & a crisp disco beat. Cheeky bass licks only accentuate the funk on the lead in, but it’s all a precursor for the dynamic twists and turns the track whips round, from bittersweet piano chords to snarling filter sweeps, starlit strafes to Moog-ish growls. Both wildly imaginative and utterly instantaneous at the same time, it’s everything you expect of Arkist but rendered in a completely new way.

Fast becoming a main feature on the Hypercolour and Losing Suki labels, Craig McNamara AKA Last Magpie delivers his another polished EP for the label.

Title track ‘AdLibitum’ is a brooding, slow chugger, it’s dense and minimal beat coming alive with reverberating vox and melancholic chords.  ‘Empire’ ramps up the BPMs, but keeps the dusty production and stripped back drums, a spacious and on point house jam right here.

‘Leavin’ Me’ is a bassier affair, a tom led b-line and some bright and shuffling hats lays the bed for Last Magpie to get playful with an old acapella, whilst the EP closes on the devastating ‘Still Walking’, perhaps the most club-centric of the tracks on this release, it’s bouncing garage vibe and vocal chops should win this Leeds based producer plenty of fans.

     Fresh from his brilliant release on Aus Music ‘Walk The Walk’, Komon returns to Apple Pips once again to indulge his love of garage & house with a pair of utterly future-minded steppers that meld the fun-loving qualities of his productions with the most addictive kind of swing. 

     “Cosmic Jon” comes on tender at first as delicate trickles of melody and warm bass interweave around a simple kick, clap and hat pattern. Of course it can’t stay too civilised for long, and sure enough some rude bottom end grind comes bowling in and the beat starts twitching in earnest. It’s a set of drums that reside at the housier end of the garage spectrum, but shuffle and swing they do all the same, while all around a rich tapestry of keys inject the soul into the track. With some choice spiritual guidance intoned in the vocal sample, “Cosmic Jon” makes for a truly uplifting slice of contemporary 4x4 business.
