There are many different ways that the biosphere affects climate. Some produce greenhouse gases and promote warming of our planet through the greenhouse effect, while others reduce the amount of greenhouse gases promoting cooling of our planet. Thereby, by trapping heat, greenhouse gases contribute to our planet's warming and the biosphere provides the necessary environmental conditions for survival. And of course, Biosphere is the moniker of one Geir Janssen, who has been a constant influence on ambient music throughout his career. Welcome to the 27th chapter of the Ambient Sessions presented by Deep Electronics. This monthly released podcast brings you the best and the most diversity Ambient music can offer. 

This month set is mixed by Ryan Griffin, owner of A Strangely Isolated Place.

An introduction:

I rarely approach mixes with a concept in mind and often find them developing organically in the process. I did however, want this mix to be a deep journey, which was hard, as I've been listening to lots of melodic synthesizer music recently, so I had to get in the right mind-set for it. I started to picture space, and was partly inspired by this video for an Alva Noto track which is a spectacular combination of imagery and sound. The mix ended up being an accompanying soundtrack to some kind of failed rocket launch - starting with optimism, becoming more intense, experiencing glitches and more dramatic moments along the way, and finally falling back down to earth and more recognizable, familiar ground. It's a little cliché for an ambient mix- but I find it extremely relaxing to picture a journey along the way and felt this one came together quite nicely if listened to as a whole.

Inspired by insomnia, listening to ambient music each morning and especially, Brian Eno’s seminal album Music for airports, I decided to put together an ambient mix focused on mostly drones, a surrounding atmosphere that evolves rather slowly in order to soothe, calm, or even more or less, help fall asleep. Ambient is somewhat music that can help you focus whilst studying, or unfocus while sleeping or just reading a book. I’ve put two of my favorite current ambient producers of the moment on the mix : Mick Chillage, from Dublin Ireland, and his awesome, breathtaking song Approaching Antares that feels like floating in hyperspace. That song is from my favorite album of 2011, Faxology, released on Fax records in 2011. As for Bvdub, aka Brock Van Wey, he hails from San Francisco and his music is simply magical and stunning. If Tangerine dream were still making music, they’d probably aim for BVW types of sounds…One last look at the sea, also from 2011 and the same album name, is so relaxing, you will find your self daydreaming with amazing soundscapes…The rest is all ambient, all lush atmospheres and might expand your chill-out experience I hope. And for fellow travellers, I know how stressful a jam packed plane can be and so is flying or the fear of flying…Try this mix with your eyes closed and your headphones on. Use your feelings as the mighty and wise Yoda once said, and find peace of mind you will ;-)

Cosmin Nicolae, aka Cosmin TRG, has been churning out sonic excellence for more than a decade. With a recent album on the illustrious Opal Tapes, as well as another one on his own Fizic imprint, he has executed his ambient foray with great success. Remaining aware of how society tends to break everything down for its own uses, he moves forward with an awareness of ambient's originally sacred place in the lives of those who have helped culminate it.  This awareness, combined with his nuanced production, made him a ripe pick for our podcast series.
