Very happy to share this recording of a special set I played at a gathering with friends in Scotland last November. It was recorded late on the Sunday evening, in what is definitely the cosiest ambient space I’ve ever had the joy to play in: a room surrounded by squashy sofas and cushions, one wall covered in incredible mind melting visuals from Vincent Rang, and a fireplace crackling away in the background.

I poured a lot of myself into this set, it’s really one for getting lost in, a space for dissolution into the beyond, being swept away into the realm of the imagination. I hope you find something in this journey ~~

I am so grateful to share with you all today a very poignant and sacred entry in the Deep Mind Music series from Lou Drago. Lou has woven together a truly otherworldly psychedelic journey for the soul, a luminescent experience, a gently glowing hologram of emotion 💠

Lou Drago and I connected years ago when they asked me to make a mix for their TRANSIENCE series, which invites contributors to create a “temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate futures free from all systems of oppression.” We found a synchronicity in the role ambient music has played in our lives, and how it opens portals to new imagined existences for us. Since then, I’ve had the joy of playing for Lou at infinity rug, the ambient-focussed event series they curate with Marum, where we have shared deep chats, silly giggles and shared philosophies (as well as ambient music ofc).

They have put a great deal of thought and care into this mix, which you can hear in the delicately programmed selections, the fluidity of the whole, and the full-being submersion into an emotional plane of existence. From the opening seconds of the mix, clarifying crystalline twinkles open the way, realigning our sense of being, and taking us into this subtle soundscape. This mix feels like a gently calming presence, like both a sigh, and a weight lifted from the shoulders.

As we sink into the mix, we evaporate into vaporous wisps of energy, as expansive washes of sound contrast with infinitesimal whirls and organic instrumentation. We are submerged into a panoramic dreamstate, morphing mystical landscapes expanding before us. Lou guides us through a misty forest teeming with life, droplets of water slipping off the end of intricate leaves around us.

In the final 30 minutes of the mix, I feel as if I am all the flickering stars in the night sky, as interplaying vibrational drones dissolve us into the depths. Lou then very gently lifts us from this state, the atoms of our being carefully reassembled, coming back to reality in a state of blissful harmony. I hope you find peace in this heart-opening trip 🤍🌌🤍

This release comes in the same week that I will be joining Lou as a guest of TRANSIENCE at WHOLE festival this weekend, where we will both be playing ambient sets in the early hours of Saturday. I am really looking forward to this occasion of continued sonic kinship between us, see you there if you are coming 💗

"Also known as Malii Yorks, I'm an Amsterdam based artist who is passionate about making refined ceramics and composing deep rhythms within the spectrum of techno as a genre. 

This recording shows my love for deep percussive techno rhythms and was made in the period when I was moving to another house and therefore had no studio for a while. It was a warm week with high temperatures so I often sat outside on the balcony with a small controller recording mixes. This one contains some of my favs and some tracks of my own."

As the fog rolled over the Forgotten Valley, Ute collective co-founder Marius Bø was on duty to sound the Funktion-One alarm clock and open the final morning of Monument Festival 2024. Kosmic Skaut graces us with a truly stunning mix recorded with tender loving care for the 52nd chapter of our Podcast Series. The Prague via Brno based artist has been a kindred musical soul and a friend for a long time and we’re so happy to finally welcome him to our cozy lil family circle 🤍

Mikuláš aka Kosmic Skaut goes slow and steady behind the decks, interlocking psychedelic, acid-tinged and hypnotic sounds in his DJ sets spanning multitudes of ambient and dance music genres. For Mikuláš, music is all about collectivity and togetherness ~ a takeout from his early years as a boy scout. He materialises this spirit in projects including organising festival Michalský Výpad in Olomouc, co-running the notorious ÉTER collective in Brno and regurlarly putting on his Kosmic Care events at Ankali’s Planeta Za which he always ~ as an aspiring chef and baker ~ supplies with tasty homemade snacks. Once you try his pizzenka (the cute way to say pizza in Czech) and this delicious mix, there’s no coming back 🍕

In this chapter of our Podcast Series, we plunge head first into the deep end of ambient psychedelia as we take off on this phenomenal voyage through Kosmic Skaut’s wild and wonderful imagination. As we move through the mix, so it moves with us, allowing for softness to emerge in waves of amorphous drones melting into one another, layered with textures, field recordings and electro-acoustic instrumentation in the build up to the rhythmical crescendo that sees it conlcude 🌬️

In times such as these, it is imperative that we swiftly come together as a community to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and amplify the voices of the unheard. The time for action is now, and musicians have a responsibility to acknowledge and pay tribute to the rich heritage of the music we hold so dear. Therefore the Unrush team has asked friends and collaborators to contribute some stunning musical works to the first edition of The Unrush Files. Entitled "Rush of Communion", this various artists compilation embodies a collective effort to support those who are fighting at the front lines, risking everything to facilitate lasting and meaningful change in a fundamentally unjust society. 

All proceeds from this compilation will be donated to the Detroit Justice Center, which is a national nonprofit organization that pays bail for people in need, reuniting families and restoring the presumption of innocence. This essential work can not be understated, as police have arrested more than 10,000 peaceful protesters who were speaking out against systemic racism in response to the killing of George Floyd. It is only when we work together, by both looking inwards and lending our efforts outwards, that we can begin to manifest a new world built on the principles of equality and justice.
