This recording was selected for a guest spot on Dublab Radio, that aired on Saturday, January 29th, 2022 and was accompanied with a brief interview that was lead by Lottie, which is posted here below. 

What has been the biggest challenge and more positive outcome you’ve experienced through extended time at home?

Being alone with my record collection and contemplating how different I am feeling, and considering which slabs of vinyl that I want to spend more time with. Rekindling relationships with certain sonic objects that are saturated with memories and have the power to transport me to a different space.

Thank you for the recording this mix for dublab – I know its been a while since you put a mix into the ether – can you speak about your process?

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and wandered blindly into the void. This recording is a document of a moment in time, while smothered in an atmosphere that is as beautiful as it is ugly. The outcome is a true sonic image that is unmolested, unedited, and honest. An automatic drawing where one action responds to the next without any shadow of a doubt, and then preserved in its total form.

How did you approach the mix, did you have an idea in your mind of how it was going to go – or did you just trust your instinct?

Every time it is like traveling on autopilot with an empty mind that is prepared to accept the laws of chance while powered by an engine of chaos. I am a beacon rupturing from my life experiences. One light turns out, while another one flickers on. It is a very vehement ritual activity that depends on the action of call and response, while embracing the limitations that I set for myself by the tools that I choose to use. There is nothing but blind trust.

A lot of your art focuses on magic, ritual practice – but I would also say storytelling, a lot of the music in this mix, seems to spell some hidden meanings, can you go into any of those?

One of the strongest qualities of music, and all art in general is its subjective nature. Meanings can change continually through an endless scope of variables. The original intent of the artist can be transformed completely by the one that is digesting it. An important character of a successful work of art is its power to present open narratives shrouded in unlimited possibilities. And the closer and harder you look, the more questions will arise.

Kraków-based Olivia is an Unsound resident DJ, always taking on new challenges. The local electro, Detroit and italo connoisseur has had a great 2018, with her debut EP Skawa finally being released, and more international dates appearing in her calendar. Elena Colombi is one of the fastest rising DJs of recent months, known for her eclectic mixes and a fascinating NTS show. The Italian-born artist is based in London, where she came up as a promoter. An open-minded DJ who doesn’t specialize in one particular genre, her dynamic sets are a frantic mix of pulsing techno, freaky disco and proto-house. @elenacolombi and @olivia-ungaro played a b2b set at Unsound 2018. Iranian born Mozhgan has a love of dark and ghoulish sounds that always play out when she’s on the decks. In 2011, she started her own We Are Monsters party in San Francisco and it very much went against the grain, mostly thanks to her own definitive sets which draw on 80s synths and vintage hardware as well as exotic and ethnic rhythms, cold wave sounds and industrial textures. Since then she has established herself on the global circuit with sets at cult places like Burning Man and Panorama Bar.

She will join us at Dekmantel Festival later this summer and tastes us with what to expect with this new mix. It’s a rugged and low slung affair with jerking body music and frosted synths making for an alien vibe throughout. While often abstract and desolate, there are moments of sci-fi beauty and heady depths along the way that make this mix a cinematic experience from start to finish.

Crack Mix 376: Interstellar Funk

"If, like many others, your introduction to Black Merlin began only from the point of the highly successful Hipnotik Tradisi, your curiosity might have been piqued enough to attempt a little digging of your own, only to be gobsmacked once you realize that you’d been missing out on 90% of a highly productive, almost a decade long career that had preceded the Black Merlin stage name. By the time his jungle-infected LP arrived, Thompson had already carved out several niches for himself in various corners of the electronic music world.

Way back in 2008, Thompson was already making music as one half of Spectral Empire, a duo act with fellow Brit Kyle Martin. Since then, and in between his solo creations as Black Merlin, he has collaborated with partners under no less than two other guises (Kommune, Karamika). His musical catalogue is nothing short of spectacular, having released on such diverse labels as Omnidisc, Bird Scarer Records, Island of The Gods, LN-CC, Common Thread, Pinkman, Berceuse Heroique, SORN, ESP Institute, Boysnoize Records and Jealous God, among others. The recurring theme here appears to be one of constant reinvention, as the genres he has dabbled with oscillates from warped spacey disco, synth-driven krautrock, droney minimal wave, retrogressive EBM, to the hypnotic dark techno of recent years.
From the outside looking in, Thompson’s career trajectory thus far appears to have been less dictated by fickle industry trends and more intrinsically motivated. Running on his own internal clock, he’s been releasing music and reinventing himself at a steady and relentless pace both before and after Hipnotik Tradisi brought his name to the forefront. Few musicians would be tempted to stray from a formula that has tasted success. Not Black Merlin. Following hot on the heels of his 2016 tour de force are already two completely different records by Thompson, all within the span of a year. Clearly, he wasted little time basking in past glory.
Any bid to decode this artist and reduce him to a mere label for one’s own categorizing convenience would be a futile endeavor; it’s akin to a cynic’s vain attempt to deconstruct and unravel one magician’s trick: you’ll likely come out none the wiser and risk missing out on the pure and simple appreciation of his art form. Much better to let each of his music pieces speak for itself."
