Je suis dans une grosse phase otaku/weeb en ce moment. Je gravite généralement vers les anime, manga et light novels qui ont un style artistique particulier, un univers engouffrant, ou qui dégagent une atmosphère décontenançante. Je lis Dorohedoro en ce moment, allez voir les dessins, c’est magique! Merci à Diego et Erika pour la suggestion!
Sinon, j’ai toujours été fan de cinéma. Je recherche les mêmes caractéristiques que mentionné plus haut. J’aime n’importe quel art qui me procure une sensation qu’on qualifierait d’uncanny en anglais. Quand tu sens le plancher se dérober sous tes pieds en comprenant plus-ou-moins pour quoi. J’aime aussi une touche d’humour subtil et coquin.

Those who know me know that I listen to a lot of different things all the time, and that I don’t tend to re-listen to something that many times, and I have trouble with concision. Some ultra-classics in my heart are The Cure, Deftones, Radiohead, Young Thug, Rosetta, Loma Prieta, Converge and, David Bowie and Angelo Badalamenti. If you want some kind of answer, I would say that the album that has the ultimate vibe is Pornography by The Cure. I was also semi-obsessed with Lovesexy by Prince recently.

Bon, allons-y dans le désordre. Emo, post-punk, ambient de couvertures ou sombre et troublante, old-school indie rock, post-hardcore, trap, grindcore, neocrust, screamo, musique d’anime mignonne, jazz lent et sinistre, shoegaze, dance-punk, goth rock, nu metal, folk triste, etc. etc.

Cette question est un peu difficile pour moi, parce que j’aime garder les sentiments bien ambigus. Cela étant dit, j’aime prendre les gens par surprise avec des changements angulaires, et j’essaie toujours de promouvoir l’expérimentation en live – essayer de nouvelles combinaisons de tracks risquées pour un maximum de propulsion, ou quoique ce soit! Je cherche aussi la contagion énergétique par la danse et le sautillage derrière les decks.

Well, if we’re dreaming, I would say a Pioneer mixer (for maximum fader slamming capability and mad effects), 3 CDJ 2000 Nexus and 2 Technics SL-1200, good monitors not too close to my ears and some space to jump around. I like the place as dark as possible, a little ambient color and some strobe action. Possibly a couple beers.
I would be perfectly fine with 2 CDJs, and maybe a turntable as a treat.

It’s so hard picking just one, since I rarely play the same track more than 2 or 3 times. Maybe Taking First by Henry Greenleaf (sped up a few BPMs) just to see the looks on people’s faces.

NYC’s Andrew Devlin takes a break from his usual dance floor facilitation to offer us a poolside soundtrack inspired by a recent stay at The Standard hotel in Miami Beach.

Q. Where do things currently sit on @thelevelparty front, and what other projects have you been busily chipping away at?

A. What’s that line? “We’ve been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing.” I think we’re nearing 10 now. In any case, the party feels like it’s in a really good place. After doing it more or less solo for a minute, I brought 5 residents on board who I love dearly–Alien D, KFeelz, Nigelthreetimes, No Sir, and Yibing. Everyone has so much range and energy, it’s been special getting the group together.
I’m really excited for our Glen Falls House weekender upstate in July (14-16). We get to take over this little hotel in the woods for a weekend and stretch out. It’s a dream. Big shoutout Josh Houtkin at Good Room for all his work making that a reality.
Past that, we’ve got some shows at our usual spots, Le Bain and Good Room, as well as a couple of day parties at Public Records’ new Nursery and a July 4 BBQ at Mansions. Would really like to bring the group of us to some other cities soon. I dream about heading back to New Orleans, doing Level Miami, Level Mexico City, Ibiza, etc…Anyone reading this wants to get in touch, let’s build ;)
Personally, I run a small sound company here in NYC, so I’m trying to grow that business and maintain my sanity. I’d like to get back into making music soon, even just a few cheeky edits. Start a podcast (I know, I know). And eventually open up a venue. A pub of sorts with good food and music. 

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together?

There is, in fact, a pretty specific one. This mix is dedicated to the pool at the Standard in Miami. I went in January for the first time and recorded this when I got home. The vibe there is so strong. You’re sitting outside, eating the best caprese salad of your life, there’s a 2’ iguana crawling on a palm tree, you’ve got a green juice or a margarita in one hand. Everyone is having a good time and partying in this really respectful way. They’re just sipping on a cocktail or walking to the hot tub or making out in the pool. 
I thought a lot of that had to do with the soundsystem and the music programming–there are speakers everywhere (including underwater) playing at like 6/10 volume. The music is on a sort of soulful r&b/ balearic tip. I was on Shazam all weekend. So this mix is a dedication to that–if someone gave me 80 minutes to DJ the Standard Miami pool, this is what I would play.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart, or old favourites that you’ve been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? 

A. Definitely. To run through a couple… ”Wall Street” I discovered reading Dub by Michael Veal. Great book for anyone interested in DJ’ing, soundsystems, production, etc. I got really into Jackie Mittoo reading that, and have been playing that track since. 
The Lauryn Hill track, “Sweetest Thing” I heard in a coffee shop in Amsterdam in 2009, forgot about completely, then recently re-discovered.
“Don’t Break my Heart” is a big song for my wife and me. We both stumbled on it when we started dating at the beginning of 2020. We almost chose it as our first dance at the wedding, but thought the lyrics were a little dark. Anyway, big tune at the house. 
And the last track, the Mike Huckaby remix, is close to my heart. I was lucky enough to meet Mike a few years ago and gave him a ride to his hotel after a gig. He had just played for 3 hours and all he wanted to talk about was my Volkswagen Jetta. He was really such a sweet, warm guy, and this track always makes me think of him. R.I.P.

Motion Sickness w/ Warzou & Junior

Our first mix of the year is an all-production mix from mysterious artist Lårry. Over the course of an hour, Lårry takes us on an ice-age sci-fi voyage, starting with rolling bass wobblers before showcasing a more cinematic and climatic side to their productions.

Lårry first appeared five years ago through a contribution to Super Hexagon’s mix series and it wasn’t until 2018 that they made their production debut with ‘sys_001’ on UK label Uncertainty Principle. Since then they have returned Super Hexagon with ‘Kauz’ EP and now make their first appearance on Berlin label Awkwardly Social. It comes as no surprise to discover that their inspirations lie mainly outside of the club circuit, instead, drawing influence from computer games and tabletop RPGs such as Silent Hill 1-4, Resident Evil 1-3, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and Pathologic - the latter two can be found on the ‘Nines’ EP.

The neighbourhood guy, Big A.D., makes his long-awaited debut this Friday with the self-released ‘Something New’ EP. 

Based in New York City, Andrew Devlin first dabbled with electronic music in 2009 but it wasn’t until 2019 that he fully immersed himself and started working on the tracks you’ll find on ‘Something New’. A man of many interests and projects, Andrew founded the party series The Level Party with DJ Voices and Onkel-S, runs a small business called Devlin’s, is an avid cook and likes to spend time shooting hoops.

On his debut release, Andrew takes us through his favourite party moods from the early hours ambient rumbler ‘Couch Track’, the emotional house number ‘Back To Me’ keeping dancers close to the subs, and a pure late-night roller with ‘The Beginning’ (also the track that Andrew noted as the kind he’s wanted to make for the longest ‘made for a room at like 5am with some deep purple and red lighting’). 

The title track is dedicated to Hot 97 and Italian house music, ‘made with peak-time at La Bain in mind’. It’s a sultry groover, nodding to the roaring 20s with a sexy sax sample and all the glitz and glamour. Ready to be wafting away under the purple hue, cocktail in hand.
