We welcome taste-maker Ian DPM for #18 of our Tapes series. 

1/2 of the powerhouse label Scuffed Recordings, owner of Definite Party Material (the match to his namesake), part of the team at Lobster Theremin, and a talented producer and DJ: Ian DPM's mixes and music span from techno, electro, breaks, house and beyond with a prominent sampling style which is always vibrant and full of energy. 

Taste level is what sets Ian DPM out from the rest and his curation comes with razor-sharp precision. Intuition has had him championing music from across electronic music spheres and his label Scuffed Recordings has found a special place in the center of the UK's electronic music scene pumping out consistent releases and continuously earning its spot as one the most innovative underground labels around. 

Ian DPM excels in everything they put his mind to Tapes #18 is just another clear and brilliant example of this.

Nightclubs reopened in the UK the day I recorded this mix so I put it together with peak time in mind. Without overthinking it, I reckon it's a good representation of where my ear is at the moment.

Like a blossoming mind-fungus, the microtextual world of upsammy hums with the uncanny seepage of the organic. Effortlessly blending translucent tones and funky rhythms, the Amsterdam artist creates a natural groove that flows through different speeds of spatial vibes and dreamy soundscapes. Collaborating with visual artist Jonathan Castro in many of her live shows, they craft psyched-out landscapes, playing with contradictions of comfort and solitude. These are beautiful companion pieces to her ephemerally-hitting DJ sets, drawing from trippy experimental DnB and offbeat techno.

wav.world emerged out of a long-running chat exchange of mixes, tracks, and some playful speculation: If you were going to make a platform for DJ mixes in 2024, what would it look like?

Mixes are a unique type of musical expression. They capture a specific moment in time, determined by the knowledge and style of the artist. A mix is as important a creative statement as an album, remix or EP. One mix can change an artist’s career, one mix can open a listener’s mind to something completely new.

We miss the importance that mixes used to have. So, we made a platform for mixes.

Each wav.world mix gives one artist the time and resources to create whatever kind of mix they want, to share something sonic about who they are and what they love.

Every wav.world mix will feature a longform interview with the artist which gets to the heart of what moves them—in music and in life—through text, video and image. Each edition of wav.world will feature the commissioned work of music journalists, visual artists and graphic artists.

For the 10th episode of the Audio Series, we're delighted to welcome British mastermind, @syzuk !

Expert in complex and often off-kilter rhythms, he's concocted a groovy and explosive set just the way we like them, somewhere between percussive techno and house music with a distinctive grimey signature.

"For this mix, I wanted to showcase some nice pacey groovers intended to make you move! Weaving and leaning between percussive techno and house music, with the usual sprinkling of grimey/subby goodness. Later in the mix, I took an unexpected turn and meandered into the 150bpm territory (somewhere I rarely go), for a flurry of bass heavy rattlers to send you on your merry way."

First launching his hugely successful YouTube channel Definite Party Material, Ian DPM has gone on to become one of Bristol's finest exports. Renowned as an influential tastemaker for his genre-defying sets, as evidenced in his mix for us, Ian DPM caters for the dancefloor with high energy house cuts mixed with a flurry of techno, dancehall-esque anthems and breakbeat.

Recently Ian has been co-running emerging record label Scuffed Recordings alongside hosting events in Bristol as part of the Midnight Shift Crew. This Friday will see Ian take to London with the Presha Records guys for their debut party in the city.
