Nantes-based DJ, producer an Livity Sound affiliate @simocell jumps from bass-heavy club beats and breaks into rap, trap and back again in his hyperactive On Cue mix

A producer of singular bass-driven beats, Simo Cell turned the darkest days of the lockdown to his advantage and worked on a stellar new mini- album. He tells DJ Mag how the enforced break from DJing has changed his perspective, and how he’s bringing through a new wave of talent in his hometown

Manchester’s BFTT brings his serendipitous club moments to the Untitled 909 mix series, describing his contribution as a ‘Best Of Compilation of some big blend moments that have happened during recent sets.’ 

Including unreleased tracks from himself, YCO Cru, Henzo and ‘internet friends’, BFTT’s mix excels in building pace, slowly chugging along via the percussive rhythms of Le Motel, Toma Kami, and Mistareez before an Amerie moment flips the switch. From then on, it’s go big or go home! 

Earlier this year, BFTT released his most reflective work to date on TT, a seven-track album titled ‘Redefines’, that was four years in the making. The album followed on from previous EPs on AD 93, All Centre, Mutualism and YCO - the label he co-runs with aya.

Nostro Hood System label founder Galtier enters the chat with a mix which he would describe as “wobbly, wonky, woozy, wubby, whizzy, whippy, whompy, wibey”.  Taking a lot of W's with this one. 

Galtier says, “this hour and a half mix is a coagulation of the mid-range BPM stuff I have found recently. I often mix really slow or really fast tunes, so I wanted to explore the forgotten BPMs that don’t grace my sets or mixes as often.”

There is often a desire to take you away to faraway lands within Galtier’s music, with Nostro Hood System being a thematic label focused on the xenological discovery of an alternate galaxy. The label’s releases are the artefacts that originate from it. This approach has stemmed from his love of 1980s science fiction and fantasy that he grew up on. 

Aside from the label, Galtier is a prolific producer within his own right. His productions have seen him land on labels such as Infinite Machine, NAAFI, Files Rec and Druid Cloak’s Apothecary as well as his own.

It has always been a struggle to sum up the sounds of Zuli. The Egyptian sound artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist is restlessly creative and unconventional in what he does. He can do everything from rap, IDM, footwork to hardcore jungle and experimental rhythms, and mainly on Lee Gamble’s UIQ label. He's also done a lot for his native Cairo scene as co-founder of both the Kairo is Koming (KIK) and AHOMA collectives, and former co-head of the city's alternate music venue VENT which later turned into a club night and festival. He's now firmly established in the wider European scene, not least in part thanks to his excellent radio show on NTS. 

There is no messing around on this week's mix. It's a dystopian soundtrack that unites Arab music, Chicago club, European techno and UK bass. Every track fizzes with energy, prickly percussion or distorted drums. It's intricate yet heavy, dense yet atmospheric and the warped designs and contorted rhythms make an art form of physicality.

Unsound 2022 brought together LCY and Lee Gamble to play a blistering b2b set exploring percussive techno, jungle, and beyond. Fortunately, we hit the record button, resulting in Unsound Podcast 87!
Lee Gamble creates genre-agnostic music, incorporating dub, garage, and jungle, bleeding into grindcore metal and machine-strength techno. LCY was born and bred in Bristol, soaking up the city's rich soundsystem culture, which still plays a crucial part in their music. It feels like a lifetime ago now: 25th Jan, we had no idea what 2020 had in store for us all; Cleyra was finishing off his set of elegant, tripped out and slinky rnb-meets-Techno upstairs; Mehtola had sealed the brick in the dungeon with an extra varnish of "tuff", punching holes in the air with mean, broken, bass wrecking sluggers; it was time for the French lads to step up.

The Fusion Mes Couilles residents delivered three hours of a fuckin mental hammering of everything "ball breaking": hardcore, acid, techno, ghetto tech, trap, jungle and everything inbetween. Mean and fringe burning; people were pulling themselves up the the stairs, out the dungeon, needing a break, having no idea what just hit 'em!

Here is the final 1.5h of what was a really special set. Needless to say, you can hear everyone present, well and truly got loose.
