This was done in a very short time but it was all the more fun and challenge to work on this - the brief was "slightly retro, uplifting, slowish", so I tried to make it sound like a bit of an 80s sci-fi movie endscroller track. Despite some serious micromanagement to fit the future visuals, I'm very very happy with the end result.

I originally wanted to make a faster, drum-and-bass-y version, but that just didn't work out - at one point I accidentally dropped the tempo to half and I liked the groove enough to finish it that way.
There are a couple of weird samples in there which might need explanation: Variform, as it is known, is heavily influenced by Imatran Voima's track "In/Out", which I decided to sample back into the a Variform remix, just to back-reference the original.

“Up Rough in the Jungle” was just released!

To celebrate 15 years of demoscene dominance, Up Rough are taking over the BitJam Podcast for a series of DJ sets.
First in the series is “Up Rough In The Jungle” mixed by Hoffman.
This mix really demonstrates the diverse output which gives Up Rough their legendary status. Starting in the smooth soundscapes of the mid 90′s Jungle, travelling through to the dark head nodding Tech-Step with a quick jaunt into the Jazz Lounge then ending in the modern realms of Drum n Bass. It plays out like a history of the dance music scene and works as an education to the uninitiated.
