With a ten-man team led by the grimiest producer in the five boroughs, it’s been easy for the Wu-Tang Clan to come up with ill combinations of MCs to create unforgettable rap songs. Even when members of WTC went solo, their albums’ still sounded like Wu projects, with tons of features and posse cuts. With our latest edition of The 10s, we thought it would be dope to focus solely on Wu Duets, when two different Wu-Tang Clan MCs go dart for dart on one banging track. Sure, it’s easy to get everyone to hop on a beat and pile on the verses, but finding the bomb combo can sometimes be tricky. Well, not for these dudes. Sharpen your swords, let’s duel.

DISCLAIMER: At this point its tough to put out ANY Alchemist project and hope it will rival the perfection from any of his projects this year. Whether its reuniting with Prodigy, dropping mixtapes from Willie The Kid or Boldy James and the crazy COKE HEAD MIX that came out yesterday, a dope ALC mix of his production in 2013 was too easy to do

So we went left... the far left. Get it?

Today we celebrate the 36th birthday of the great Alan The Chemist, and in true UNT fashion - you know we cooked up something nice.

What we did was set out to create a complete discography of ALC RAPS - Yes ALC RAPS. Not ALC BEATS, i mean who hasn't done that already.

We enlisted the help of the young shooter,@dubmaxx to put together a playlist on spotify of 36 joints of nothing but straight raps by Our Boy Al.

But...that wasn't enough..

When it was all said and done though - we knew we had to stick to the script and brought you another edition of The 10s. The latest mix, handled by UNT's in-house DJ, @UNITEDCRATES  features 10 of the hottest A-L-C verses.

Coalmine Records is pleased for yet another rerelease of ‘Land of the Crooks,’ the collaborative extended play project from the late Sean Price and Melbourne’s go to producer, M-Phazes. 

The project finds the longtime underground legend lending his distinctive, Brownsville-bred grimy vocals over Phazes’ rich tracks full of dramatic pianos, rich bass-lines, swinging horns and hard drums.

The A-side includes the main passes, comprised of four original tracks with the addition of the Small Professor Remix for ”Murdah Type Thinkin (feat. Guilty Simpson).” For this special edition rerelease, Coalmine has also added the Divided Souls Ent. & DJ Pain 1 Remix of “Land of the Crooks,” which was only previously made available on the label’s remix compilation, ‘Remineded,’ which first dropped back in January of 2015.

The B-side includes the instrumental passes of all of the original tracks, as well as the Small Pro Remix, in addition to the “Crookapella,” which includes various scratch stems taken from the EP, in addition to various isolated drum sounds, sound effects, and acapella of the “Land of the Crooks” single.

Additional features on LOTC include Roc Marciano, Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Maffew Ragazino, Loudmouf Choir and the Dilated Junky, DJ Babu.

Vinyl is manufactured on a blue and green swirled configuration, limited to just 500 Units, and comes complete with the Andres Guzman designed artwork, inspired by the vintage ‘80s movie, ‘Crocodile Dundee.’

Sean Price was Hip-Hop’s Gray Hulk, a barbarian with the pen, with the sharpest of wits. A true Brooklyn legend...riP!

Today marks nineteen years since the release of their sophmore album, Do You Want More?!!? Over the last two decades we've seen  The Roots grow from small stage shows & open mics in the streets of Philly all the way to headlining their own festival & the Late Night show with Jimmy Fallon.  

As they proceeded to continue to rock the mic, their impact to Hip-Hop was immediate. From the jump, they displayed an expertly mixed combination of lyricism and live musicianship which amazed fans and influenced their peers alike.

Qool DJ Marv's 2-hour mix dedicated to The Roots, originally broadcast on WURD Philly. Marv's thoughts on 2 supporting inspirations:

One - I was telling my mom about The Roots making it from playing music on a South Street corner to becoming a band that travelled all over the U.S. and the world and is now the house band of the new Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She wasn't aware of them and their journey. One idea behind this is a Roots mix for the older generations.

Two - I imagined this scenario between a Dad and his son. Dad's hipping son to the hip-hop of his day. Thanks to a cool mix from a DJ named Marv, Dad played his boy the entire mix on a drive from Philadelphia to New York (because they scored tickets to the Tonight Show).

After each and every song, son asked "That's them too?"
"Yes, that's them too," smiled Dad.
"They sound so different, every song," the boy with the eager ears said.
"Well, they are musicians and their main voice, Black Thought, what a name eh(?), he's more than a rapper, he raps poetry, stories, information and encouragement."
"I thought rappers just talked about themselves and how they the best," said son.
"They are best at self-aggrandizement, I always needed more son," taught Dad.
(The Seed 2.0 starts playing)
"Oh who is this? Are we finished listening to the Roots," asked son.
"That's them too," beamed Dad while reaching for the + sign on the volume control.
"Wow, that's them too," said son with a voice that trailed off as he looked out the window and saw New York City on the horizon.
(Narrator: "Each time [son] asked "That's them too," in his mind's eye, heart & soul and deep in his consciousness, he was actually saying, "That's me too. That's me too. That's me, too. That's me.")

I've done 7 x 1 hour mixes, solely made up of old tunes sampled in classic Hip Hop tracks - but cut up on two copies / decks to re-create the loops / chops people used.
I didn't use any compilations, reissues, bootlegs, or downloads. All originals. I've always been a digging fiend on the side!
But - to save the original pressings (and also cos it's hard enough to get one copy of some of these, let alone two!) - I loaded them into Serato vinyl, so I could scratch away to my heart's content, with ruining anything!
So here's VOL.1.

Large Professor is a man of many names: Large Pro, Extra P, The Professor At Large, The Mad Scientist, the list goes on — and so do his talents. The heralded Queens representer is recognized for an alchemy of masterful production and his ability to rock a microphone. His status in hip-hop’s history is secure.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the release of Main Source‘s influential and acclaimed LP, Breaking Atoms, the classic album from the group founded by Large Pro that also included “them two DJs” – the Toronto-based members, Sir Scratch and K-Cut. Much of the credit for the album’s effective use of enriched jazz and soul samples goes to Large Pro, who expertly hand-crafted the sounds on the E-mu SP-1200. Extra P also gave light to a hungry up-and-comer named Nasty Nas (maybe you heard of him) on the the record’s famous posse cut, “Live at the Barbeque,” and the newcomer made the most of his on-wax debut.

The 10s | Main Sorceror: Behind The Boards With Large Professor

When the discussion of underrated MCs comes up, Black Thought's name is frequently mentioned. And we take that as an insult. It's 2012, and the Philly bred frontman from The Roots has been slaying every mic in his path for two decades now, in concerts across the world and on over a dozen LPs, without taking a breather. He's even managed to stay relevant with rap purists while holding down a gig on Jimmy Fallon's late night NBC talk show. Tariq Trotter is a one of one in this rap shit. There is no other artist with his stage presence, stamina, versatility, and straight up skills to pay the bills. He's the quintessential master of ceremonies.

To celebrate his 42nd birthday, we give you a special edition of The 10s titled Thought At Work, because he stays on his job, and doesn't ever let up. He’s a monster live, but his recordings are just as impressive, and he's held his own on tracks with everyone from Big Pun to Ghostface Killah to Mos Def, not to mention his countless classics with The Roots. The 10s | Thought At Work: 10 Black Thought Bangers

 Welcome to the fourth installment of our MPC (MC x Producer Combo) series. Here we breakdown classic works put together by a specific MC and their producer counterparts.  We've already taken a closer look at some other dope combos such as: M.O.P. and Primo, Prodigy and Alchemist, and Nas and Salaam Remi.  And to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Common's debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, we thought it would be fitting to take it to The Chi, dig through Com's catalog, and profile some of the illest joints he's worked on with his signature producer, No I.D 

 In today's pro-tools centric rap world, where studio sessions are emailed back and forth, ANYONE and EVERYONE is a producer.  That special relationship between the rapper and their beatsmith, is one that holds less and less weight, making it important to celebrate the great ones.  Com and Immenslope (as No I.D. is officially known as) are one of those great ones.  Lonnie and Dion, have been successful working partners since day one. and have not only made a name for themselves, but defined a sound for the city they rep. Never defined as a group or a duo, the alchemy of No I.D.'s sound and Com's rhymes, put the Windy City on the map. Twenty years since their debut release, Com's nine albums stand up against the discography of any of hip hop's greats, and No I.D.'s musical knowledge and hustle landed him a gig as Executive VP of Def Jam Records.  "Peace to No I.D. and my nigga Y-Not!"
