A2 Quenum - Intimate Immensity

On our radar for some time, Berlin outfit Eins Tiefer eventually join the fold with their 7th EP for Upon You, 'Bear Market'.

Exponents of a sound that merges an enthralling sense of melodic escapism with spontaneous floor combustion, the pair has us surfing raucous sine waves and untamed envelopes with sustained panache and invention throughout.

The epitome of heavy-duty techno-house, 'Bearflag' packs an undeniably brutalistic, steel-clad punch whilst retaining that touch of weirdo funk / eerie body music swagger that shall get crowds quivering in an otherworldly sense of ecstasy.

'Seriously' pursues a further clinical and stealthy route, treating us to a hot spring of face-melting machine howl and elastic bass bounce, sure to trigger off maximum response from its raving audience. Handed over to Daniel Trabold, the track trades its churning rhythmic assets for a straightforward train-like chug, boiling up to further impressive, epic amplitude. Wrapping up this much dynamic jaunt into Eins Tiefer's ever mischievous headspace,

'Tunewalk' rolls its hips to a finely engineered mix of Afro-laced sensuality, piano house tropes and opaque hardware hoodoo, altering them beyond recognition to paint a pulsating tableau in motion that shall not feel out of place either in a peak-time setting, nor when the after kicks in and the blur in your eyes expands into your soul.

Das Set durfte ich letzten Freitag für den EinKlang e. V. auflegen. Seit langem war ich dabei mal wieder als Gabromate unterwegs und habe mich gerade deshalb sehr über das positive Feedback gefreut. 
Hatte leider am Anfang vergessen den Recordbutten zu drücken, weshalb die ersten Minuten fehlen. Für das Intro kann man aber auch auf meinen Mix vom Newcomer Contest zurückgreifen. :D

It took us a while but now it‘s time to boost the first AS USUAL MUSIC release by our all-time companion and good friend AANTIGEN. The man behind this alias is a free, open-minded music lover and moreover a musician with an unconventional and real artistic approach. Releases on labels like Bar25 Music, Acht or Möhre Rekorder marked his path so far. „California“ comes with two lively and pro-active originals and a collaboration with AS USUAL label head BEE LINCOLN, all made for the love of dance aesthetics on club floors.

„California“ is a highly anticipated work with a special sense of serenity, where cozy warm deepness meets subliminal tension and a little extra portion insanity through crispy sounds. While everything  is flowing, a subtle acid line sneaks in and offers sub-harmonically a dirt-factor.

The heart of AS USUAL MUSIC beats especially for twisted and freakin’ tracks, which AANTIGEN provides with „Somebody Like You“ - a nasty club tune for ripping the floors. An extraordinary giantly-curved synth sequence drives the madness to the peak, stimulated by whipped claps and a low-end on point, as the backtracked voice stabs are just the leftovers of this wild ride with its hilarious taste. Big love for this one! 

The third one „Front Of House“ turned some rounds until it found its calling; attracted by the slightly sawed synth bass of this track, Bee Lincoln twisted AantiGen’s modulated hook and got it ready for a trip. After (no) sleepless nights, here we are with the collaborative advanced mix, flushed by A’s inglorious idea and B’s dry’n tight drumming skills. Ending up in partly acidic-like sounds and emphasizing basses, the result is a stripped-down pumpin’ and shakin’ track on a quite oblique position, as usual as we love it. Welcome Aaron! <3

Philippe Quenum returns to Cadenza Music with ‘Solitaire’, some thirteen years after helping kick start the Swiss label with the 2003 release ‘Orange Mistake’/’Funky Dandy’.  This groundbreaking single, co-produced with Luciano, has since become a landmark release, not just for the label, but also as the benchmark for the micro-house and minimal tech-house genre that developed over the decade.

With a music career than spans back to the mid-80s (dancing in NYC as part of the breakdance troupe, The Magnificent Force), Quenum found his forte with house music, both as a DJ, and as a producer and label owner.  Setting up the Access 58 label in 1998 as a platform for his music and collaborations, Quenum has consistently released over the years for labels like Crosstown Rebels, Soma, alphahouse, Thema and Trapez LTD.

‘Solitaire’ finds Quenum on fine form; on the lead track, dubby FX and bass shaking shots roll out over an urgent disco beat, muted brass and technoid stabs fire from all directions as the tension building pads flourish.  Shadowy forces are at play on ‘Mystic’; discordant sounds echo and bellow over reverberating percussion and a dense back beat that fire into life with shuffling hi-hats.  Wrapping up this welcome return to the label is ‘Mystery’; whipping snares and industrial clangs rumble over the urgent drums for more hypnotizing dancefloor work from Philippe!

It is the year 2007.

Electronic music is more popular than ever, especially TechHouse is on a thriving uprise and Berlin already became the buzzing nightlife capital of the world it is known as today.

Amidst all these creative and musical vibes a new label is born -  Upon.You Records. Founded in February 2007 by DJ & producer Marco Resmann, with a first release under his moniker Phage on Martin Landsky's Intim Recordings as well as great success as one half of the infamous project Luna City Express under his belt, and electronic music veteran Hawks Grunert, formerly involved in running Timing Recordings with Tanith as well as working for legendary „Frontpage“ magazine, Upon.You Records was already widely recognized for its first release, Phage's „Vut & Vat EP“, and started to drive on the fast lane immediately.

Originally intended to be a platform for music from an inner circle of friends as well as for aspiring young talent it didn't take long until the label branched out in 2008 with first international signings,  various label tours all over the place and a first label compilation.

In 2009, after receiving massive support from nightlife heavyweights like Steve Bug, Brothers Vibe, Someone Else and many more, a cover story in German electronic music magazine GROOVE and with a catalogue of roughly twenty 12“ releases Upon.You launched two subdivisions - Upon.You Digital and the momentary Upon.You Sweet & Sour Series – and established a booking agency as well as regular label events at two of Berlin's most praised venues, Watergate Club and the infamous Panoramabar.

Furthermore Upon.You Records teamed up with Workaholics Berlin for the launch of a merchandising line in 2009, introducing the labels unique visual image to the world of street fashion.

With the launch of the annual label retro- / futurespective „Upon.You Diary“ and an expanded core artist family now including Marco Resmann, Martin Landsky, ONNO, Ruede Hagelstein, Gunnar Stiller, Magit Cacoon and The Cheapers alongside many others, 2010 finally paved the way for success and fruitful growth to come in consecutive years in which Upon.You became one of the leading labels in all things TechHouse and related.

And it was even the first issue „Upon.You Diary“ that awed the electronic world with Marco Resmann's widely praised tune „This Song“, immediately ruling every dancefloor after it was released and drawing even more attenttion towards the Berlin-based label which continued to expand its growing international network whilst signing releases by Quenum, Kink or the UK-based longtime ambassador Steve Lawler.

On a jam-packed schedule of about twenty releases per year lately, including Ruede Hagelstein's Beatport smash „Minus“, with label artists touring the globe frequently and armed with the brand new, 2014-launched UYX subdivision focusing on raw TechHouse and classic stamped whitelabel aesthetics, Upon.You has grown into a major force on the international electronic music circuit.

Always on the lookout for new talent and keen to explore new territories, the future looks brighter than ever for Upon.You after entering the longplay circuit with the widely acknowledged album debut of the former Tel Aviv- and now Berlin-based DJ / producer Magit Cacoon, another successful instalment of the „Upon.You Diary“-series and finally entering three digit realms with the release of Marco Resmann's extrordinary gold vinyl 12“  „100“ - the onehundredth Upon.You single release in the label history which was released in late 2015.

And things surely are about to be busier than ever for all members of the Upon.You camp over the course of 2016, celebrating the labels 8th anniversary with a dedicated series of label events all over Europe and special showcases at Sonar / Barcelona as well as ADE and, of course, a string of high quality releases for maximum dancefloor pleasure throughout this season and beyond. Watch out.
