Neon, Pt. 1

From Hamburg To Berlin

AHOI,
es ist Sommer und euer Käpt’n hat sich für euch einen gar wundervollen, meerestauglichen Plan ausgedacht: ab HEUTE bekommt ihr bis ENDE AUGUST jede Woche den passenden Sound für Sommer, Sonne, Strand und euren Seasidetrip. Huldigt mir mit wilden Gelagen am Strand, feiert in der Abendsonne, tanzt im Wasser, entspannt und liebt euch unterm Sternenhimmel und bringt mir RUM mit :) lebt, liebt und lacht und erfreut euch der kommenden Mixsets und Wochen, denn ich habe weder Mühen noch Meeresüberquerungen gescheut, um euch ein buntes Allerlei aus Tiefsee- und Meeresenge- und Klippenklängen zu kredenzen.

Den Anfang der »Summer Edition« macht ein guter Bekannte, fast Nachbar, aus meinen heimatlichen Breitengraden; der Paul Kerschke aka https://soundcloud.com/paykusten nimmt euch nochmal mit zum Meeresrausch Festival und bietet seine Künste im »Meeresrauschen Mix« dar. Also, legt eure Ohren (nicht auf die Schiene der Geschichte - frei zitiert nach Freundeskreis) ins Wasser und lauschet den Klängen, dem Rauschen des Meeres.

»Ahoi und Aloha,
ja der Wind hat mich direkt und ohne Umwege zu Rolandsons Seadsidetrip getragen. Eine Podcast-Reihe die so tiefgründig und vielfältig ist wie das Meer. Ein kleines Juwel in den Weiten der Soundwolke mit einem Käpt’n, der sich äußerst liebevoll um sein Schiff und die Crew kümmert.  Aus diesem Grund hat es mich besonders gefreut diesen Mix zu zaubern. Denn so viele Menschen, die eine ähnliche Verbundenheit zum Meer zeigen, gibt es ja in der Welt der DJ´s nun doch nicht. Und da wären wir auch schon beim eigentlichen Thema: dem Meer oder Wasser im Allgemeinen. Warum eigentlich diese innere Verbundenheit zum wohl mystischsten aller Elemente? 

Als erstes liegt das natürlich an meiner Heimat Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in der ja Wasser-, See- und Flusslandschaften das wertvollste Landschaftsgut darstellen. Ich glaube in kaum einer anderen Gegend in Deutschland hat man so oft Kontakt mit Wasser. Auch die Weite dieser Gegend und die damit verbundene Ruhe und Nähe zur Natur haben mich doch ziemlich geprägt. 

Der zweite Grund liegt natürlich in der Ostsee, Usedom und dem Meeresrausch-Festival. Gerade letzteres und die unzählig grandiosen Momentan am Bodden der Ostsee haben mich in meiner Musik, in der man ja bekanntlich seine Gefühle und Gedanken zum Ausdruck bringen möchten, maßgeblich beeinflusst. So versuche ich immer eine gewisse Ruhe in den Sets auszustrahlen. Auf der anderen Seite kann es immer wieder zu kleinen Ausreißern kommen. Auch hier die Parallele zum Meer, das an sich zwar immer eine gewisse Ruhe ausstrahlt, gleichzeitig aber auch sehr rau und gefährlich sein kann. 

So viel erst einmal dazu. Dieses Set speziell ist auf dem Flying Floor auf dem Meeresrausch-Festival 2014 entstanden. Ein alter umgebauter DDR-LKW (Robur LO), der mir nur etwa 100m von der Wasserkante einen unglaublichen Ausblick auf die langsam untergehende Sonne beschert hat. Vor einer Handvoll Leuten, darunter vielen Freunden, hat es mir unheimlich Spaß gemacht, den Sonnenuntergang einzuläuten.

For our next instalment, Upon You co-founder Marco Resmann teams up with up-and-coming Jordanian outfit, Fairplay. Having previously released on the likes of Stil vor Talent and BAR 25, the duo makes its first incursion on the label with a steam-powered jazztronics roller that conjures up the finest elements of loungey bop and dubbed-out techno. Bearing the clear aesthetic stamp of both Resmann's inch-perfectly engineered blend of deep, immersive ambience and bespoke groove, as much as it showcases Fairplay's ever-soulful strain of polyamorous rhythms and motifs -- tapping into cutting-edge house music potentialities, pure Cotton Club vibes and Arabic folk in equal measure, 'Like It Is' is hybrid boogie at its most instrumentally lush and captivatingly cinematic. Draped in a film noir kind of atmosphere where the ghosts of Bogart and Bacall would obviously not feel out of place, the track has us swirling and jiving to a sensuously metronomic swing, languidly elevating from behind thick curtains of cigarette smoke and volutes of body heat emanations, as a solid bassy groove summons all dancers to the dance-floor imminently. Tweaking the original into a vocal disco churner, Fuad and Marco treat us to a blazing mini Moog-operated workout, stressing on the track's floor-ready potential and its Sino-flavoured strings' uplift. Moving at train-like rate, this one is the epitome of a transporting number, clearly designed to have you crossing dimensions with every bar and losing yourself across its labyrinthine puzzle of heavily filtered and tape echo'ed machine funk.

It is the year 2007.

Electronic music is more popular than ever, especially TechHouse is on a thriving uprise and Berlin already became the buzzing nightlife capital of the world it is known as today.

Amidst all these creative and musical vibes a new label is born -  Upon.You Records. Founded in February 2007 by DJ & producer Marco Resmann, with a first release under his moniker Phage on Martin Landsky's Intim Recordings as well as great success as one half of the infamous project Luna City Express under his belt, and electronic music veteran Hawks Grunert, formerly involved in running Timing Recordings with Tanith as well as working for legendary „Frontpage“ magazine, Upon.You Records was already widely recognized for its first release, Phage's „Vut & Vat EP“, and started to drive on the fast lane immediately.

Originally intended to be a platform for music from an inner circle of friends as well as for aspiring young talent it didn't take long until the label branched out in 2008 with first international signings,  various label tours all over the place and a first label compilation.

In 2009, after receiving massive support from nightlife heavyweights like Steve Bug, Brothers Vibe, Someone Else and many more, a cover story in German electronic music magazine GROOVE and with a catalogue of roughly twenty 12“ releases Upon.You launched two subdivisions - Upon.You Digital and the momentary Upon.You Sweet & Sour Series – and established a booking agency as well as regular label events at two of Berlin's most praised venues, Watergate Club and the infamous Panoramabar.

Furthermore Upon.You Records teamed up with Workaholics Berlin for the launch of a merchandising line in 2009, introducing the labels unique visual image to the world of street fashion.

With the launch of the annual label retro- / futurespective „Upon.You Diary“ and an expanded core artist family now including Marco Resmann, Martin Landsky, ONNO, Ruede Hagelstein, Gunnar Stiller, Magit Cacoon and The Cheapers alongside many others, 2010 finally paved the way for success and fruitful growth to come in consecutive years in which Upon.You became one of the leading labels in all things TechHouse and related.

And it was even the first issue „Upon.You Diary“ that awed the electronic world with Marco Resmann's widely praised tune „This Song“, immediately ruling every dancefloor after it was released and drawing even more attenttion towards the Berlin-based label which continued to expand its growing international network whilst signing releases by Quenum, Kink or the UK-based longtime ambassador Steve Lawler.

On a jam-packed schedule of about twenty releases per year lately, including Ruede Hagelstein's Beatport smash „Minus“, with label artists touring the globe frequently and armed with the brand new, 2014-launched UYX subdivision focusing on raw TechHouse and classic stamped whitelabel aesthetics, Upon.You has grown into a major force on the international electronic music circuit.

Always on the lookout for new talent and keen to explore new territories, the future looks brighter than ever for Upon.You after entering the longplay circuit with the widely acknowledged album debut of the former Tel Aviv- and now Berlin-based DJ / producer Magit Cacoon, another successful instalment of the „Upon.You Diary“-series and finally entering three digit realms with the release of Marco Resmann's extrordinary gold vinyl 12“  „100“ - the onehundredth Upon.You single release in the label history which was released in late 2015.

And things surely are about to be busier than ever for all members of the Upon.You camp over the course of 2016, celebrating the labels 8th anniversary with a dedicated series of label events all over Europe and special showcases at Sonar / Barcelona as well as ADE and, of course, a string of high quality releases for maximum dancefloor pleasure throughout this season and beyond. Watch out.
