Wganda Kenya was a studio band on Colombia's legendary Disco Fuentes Records. They got together to capitalize on the growing popularity of African songs and rhythms on the Caribbean coast. Their songs feature a broad range of African and Antillean influences and showcase their talents as a band and individually. Needless to say I am a huge fan and that's why I chose to remix El Lobo. That song has grooves for days and I love the call and response vocals featured throughout. El Lobo was featured on the seminal compilation Palenque Records Palenque Palenque: Champeta, Criolla & Afro Roots In Colombia 1975-91 and Quantic's compilation - Tropical Funk on Nascente Records.

Back in the days my father used to play this song a lot while driving the car and I have liked it since the first time I heard it. This song was recorded in 1984, one year before he released his biggest hit 'mario'. As founder of the band TPOK Jazz, which dominated Congolese music from 1956 until 1989, he is counted as one of the originators of the modern Congolese sound.

Since its inception in 2013, Mawimbi founders have been expanding their knowledge of lesser known and rather undiscovered musical territories thanks to chance encounters with likeminded DJs/producers, who were kind enough to put them onto a good amount of under-the-radar tropical gems.

Launched in 2017 and named after Mawimbi's bi-monthly radio show on Rinse France, the "Radio Mawimbi" compilation series is dedicated to unearthing vintage tropical gems in the form of free download edits and remixes by some of the most seasoned diggers and promising rookies of the tropical-enthusiast community!

From deep, drum-heavy workouts to essential Guinea Bissau melancholy, through remixed Beninese afrofunk and vintage South African kwaito, this second installment features the editing and remixing works of Yeahman (Frente Bolivarista), LSD (Love Saves The Day), Déni Shain (ATANGANA Records), Umoja, Mawimbi, ATW (Around The World), Calisto, Turbo Boom-Boom (TBB) and Midnight Ravers.

After a successful 2017 which saw them release the debut EP, tour Poland with the climax reached at the renowned Unsound Festival and perform for the first time abroad in December, Polish-Angolan duo Lua Preta (Mentalcut + Supa Gia G) are back with a double single to kick off a new year! 

First up is 'Quero Mais' which brings a direct connection to Africa with the presence of another long-time Basy Tropikalne favourite - Morena Leraba from Lesotho. One of the continent's most distinctive voices famously appeared on Spoek Mathambo's album last year, also published a bunch of singles (including a collaboration with DJ Spoko) and now contributes his energetic verses to the track. The single marks also the first time we hear Supa Gia G in her full glory on rapping duties as she light-heartedly tells the story about her weekend preparations and plans. 

On the virtual flip-side there's gqom-inspired 'Somnilokwie' which already gained attention from the main man Branko himself who premiered it in his NTS Radio show. This instrumental beauty is another proof of Mentalcut's abilities to reinterpret African inspirations and current trends and take them to the next level with his modern electronic music additions.
