‘A Painting of the Wind’ is an astonishing song that we’ve loved in Jayne’s set for a while, it grapples with how artists try to express the inexpressible and how art is used as a means of escape and fantasy. Songwriter Linda Smith has a gentle but unconventional experimental style that continues to evolve as she adds new entries to her storied catalogue. Smith’s pioneering work with four-track production in the '80s found her at the beginning of a home-recording movement that would set the pace for the decades of indie rock that followed. During this most active period, Smith's music was limited mostly to obscure cassette and 7" releases. This trailblazing time was recently revisited on Captured Tracks’ compilation ‘Till Another Time: 1988-1996’. Shortly after Smith’s retrospective, she teamed up with like-mind and collaborator Nancy Andrews to release an album of beguiling pop entitled ‘A Passing Cloud’ (2023). The duo performed songs from that record at Upset The Rhythm’s 20th anniversary party at Café OTO that same year. 2024 saw further reissues of Smith’s music including Nothing Else Matters (1995) and I So Liked Spring (1996).
 
The Smashing Times are a premier East Coast Pop Experimental Group. They have also gleefully performed in London for Upset The Rhythm twice in quick succession. Known for their dogtooth style, waggish mod attitude and tumbledown sound, The Smashing Times have holes in their socks and sit idly between The Kinks and Tori Kudo. Their previous albums on K Records, Perennial and Meritorio are a cherished commodity steeped in Paisley psych and slapdash panache. 
 
This split 7” EP comprises 4 new tracks. Two from Linda Smith in keyboard-warble anthem mode and two low-fidelity daytrips by The Smashing Times. It will be released on 500 black vinyl 7”s by Upset The Rhythm on August 15th 2025.

'Where I Come From' is the first single taken from Canadian noise-rock demolition crew EarthBall's new album 'Outside Over There'. 'Where I Come From' is a dizzy sprawl of languid drums, spun-out fx, crushed staggering guitars and freaked saxophone extrapolations. This landscape of unruly sound is then stalked through by Izzy's spontaneous vocal projections, the effect is uncanny to say the least.

Brooklyn based Rips have quickly built a reputation amongst NYC showgoers, winning them over with their virtuous melodies and sheer ferocity amidst an endless flurry of shows. Their songs may channel late '70s New York City bands like Television and The Feelies, but Rips propels these references into something new. Their self-titled debut, produced by Austin Brown of Parquet Courts, is eleven tracks of buzzing guitar riffs driven by a charged rhythm section, all set under lyrics that are actually worth a damn.

Rips (the record) takes cues from the moonlighting era of rock, while delivering a set of songs distinctly fit for the modern age. Once described as a “hyperreal rock n’ roll group”, the phrase “borne forward ceaselessly into the future" is more what they’re going for here.

So break an old habit. Let your hair down (or up). Rips will take you there.

Since 2008, Lab Coast has been delivering hazy bursts of hook-laden guitar pop via a string of critically acclaimed, award-winning albums, EPs, and singles. From their basement studio in Calgary, Alberta, the song writing team of singer David Laing & multi-instrumentalist Chris Dadge (Chad VanGaalen, Bug Incision, Samantha Savage Smith) carve out detailed analogue productions; these recordings draw from the wealth of instruments that friends leave at the Lab Coast practice space, and the ever-evolving recording techniques that they've been honing since day one. Their home-brewed recordings sit in the tradition of DIY-recorders such as Strapping Fieldhands, early Guided By Voices, and R. Stevie Moore, while the songs themselves recall the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Tom Petty, and The La's. Onstage, these richly textured pieces are ably brought to life by Sammie Smith (aka Samantha Savage Smith), Henry Hsieh (Cold Water, Crack Cloud), and Darrell Hartsook (Prenup, Sissys).

'Lab Coast' is a collection of songs cherry-picked from the band’s extensive back catalogue by Faux Discx overseer Dan Reeves (Cold Pumas, Soft Walls) and the band themselves, compiled in to one succinct album and remastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Total Control). It acts as an introduction to a highly prolific band and a showcase for their highly refined ability to consistently knock clever, catchy pop songs out of the park.

Icecapades (Slowcoaches, Sex Hands, Joey Fourr etc..) are pleased to announce the upcoming release of the self titled debut LP from Manchester-based band Sprinters on May 5th, on vinyl & digital platforms.

Sprinters is the brain-child of Manchester based songwriter Neil Jarvis. Originally hailing from Wigan, Jarvis has been releasing music under his own name since 2012 and is a regular fixture on the Manchester music scene. After years spent playing solo, he slowly started to recruit a backing band for live shows before settling with a permanent band and forming Sprinters in late 2015. These are Jarvis himself, Jon Hodson (bass), Mark Stevenson (drums) and Jason Hughes (guitar). Over the past two years, Sprinters have forged a reputation as one of the most thrilling live acts in the city, and have played support slots for high profile acts such as The Monochrome Set, Chastity Belt, Holy Wave and La Luz, as well as shows all over the UK under their own steam. In 2015 they released their debut single on Blak Hand Records which received critical acclaim from the likes of The Skinny, who described the single as possessing 'the sort of hazy, warm pared down cookery of Real Estate'.

'Sprinters' is the band's first studio effort, and was recorded (mostly) live in Wigan throughout 2016 with friend of the band, local engineer Ste Jones. Comprised of a selection of songs from Jarvis's solo albums and new material, the record proved to be a labour of love, taking just under 12 months to piece together. Sprinters have emerged triumphant with a pure departure record, heavy on hooks, melodic and lyrical interplay, and a more clear and honed sound than their previous lo-fi recordings. Jarvis cites some of his major influences for the process as: The Replacements, Pavement, Neil Young, Ariel Pink and The Velvet Underground.
