Funny story about stereotypes. Law of conservation and transformation of stuff.

«Unbelievable, but almost 70 years in the U.S. there is a prohibition on the sale balalaika. In any case, Obama has extended the taboo until 2020. 
Background goes back to the pre-war time, when the then head of the Washington administration Franklin Roosevelt signed a secret decree banning balalaika in the country for 10 years. It happened in 1940 and since then the decree is extended on a regular basis. Since 2000, the decree of the Clinton ban extended to Alaska, which was the only place where the sale was allowed because balalaika in Alaska is considered the national musical instrument. During Roosevelt's time, these lands have not yet had the status of the state, so the ban was circumvented by loopholes in the legislation. 

The reason for the ban formally was the fact that a balalaika was banned in Czarist Russia of the Orthodox church and state because "allows you to mock the authorities." Of course, the Soviet Union ban was lifted, but in the U.S. this extremist tool was banned. 

Today, the ban remains in an incomplete form. Play the balalaika is not prohibited, although it needs to have a special license. Not allowed bulk sale of this tool and manufacturing industry. Single private sales are allowed. 

That's why John Flynn's book "How to make a balalaika", published in 1984 and enjoys a fantastic popularity survived the 9 editions. For ordinary Americans, who wants to enjoy the sounds of the balalaika, there is no other way but to make it yourself - buy a balalaika in the store would not be possible for at least another ten years.»
