I possess a musical mind and with it, I am on a never-ending journey for my own sound, niche, style. Whatever you want to call it, its an exploration of possibilities and creative stimuli. I try to avoid placing myself in a "pigeon hole" with any specific style. I both enjoy and have experience playing many different forms and styles and likewise draw from many of them whether I am composing original material or learning standard material. But since we live in a world where everything is subjected to categorization, I have selected a few different "categories" which can best describe my musical doings: Jazz; a foremost interest of mine as well as a committed professional pursuit. "Jazz" is really a monstrous umbrella term that covers many contrasting styles and approaches rather than just one thing (for example: swing, bebop, hardbop, soul-jazz, funk, groove, latin, dixieland, fusion, free). Just as there is "Jazz" music, there is also a "Jazz" mentality and a "Jazz" approach that can be utilized by any musician regardless of genre. The basis of this consists of spontaneous improvisation, focused listening/reacting, concise musical decision making, and both personal and group dynamism. I like to utilize all of these elements in any context in which I may find myself. The other categorical terms I draw on are "Roots Music", which is really an extension of the previous umbrella term, and goes on to encompass world, folk, and blues to name a few. The last category, "Contemporary", may seem a bit ambiguous, but at the same time is a great descriptive term for everything that may categorize music in our modern era whether it be experimental music, techno, rock, post-rock, prog-rock, folk-rock, 20th century classical etc...I am comfortable with this term because it leaves possibilities open for me to explore without have to jump through hoops to try and label everything that I may come up with creatively. What it really comes down to at the end of the day is something that Louis Armstrong summarized very eloquently: "There are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music." I am a musician and I like to play good music.

Adventure: noun - An exciting or noteworthy event that one experiences firsthand. I love adventure. Whether it be in nature, a story, or music; I am so fond of uncovering the unknown. My favorite part of music, and particularly jazz, is that you never know exactly where it will go or where it will take you. There is always some amount of mysticism when you embark on that journey. So this is my goal as a musician, composer, and band leader: to take you on an adventure.
