On this misty December day, the scientist entered the witch’s forest.  For some mystifying reasons, the guard owls decided to let the young man enter the woods without obstruction while they discretely warned the witch.  Meanwhile the scientist savored the splendors of this forest, easily the most lush and diverse ecosystem which he had ever witnessed in this part of North-Western Europe and for which he didn’t have an explanation, as this forest is not even a natural reserve.  
Slowly, the man ventured deeper into the woods while he felt an unusual calm descend upon him.  After spotting a few endangered species of animals and plants, he wanted to take a few pictures with his smartphone but then he noticed that inexplicably the device had stopped working.  Of course he could impossibly know that this was the result of an electronics-jamming spell.  Luckily, the scientist still had an old-school pencil and scrapbook to write down his thoughts and observations.  The last few months he realized his mission was to make a valuable contribution to preserve planet earth in some way or another, but so many ideas were whirling around inside his head, that he only got more and more confused.
At that moment he looked into the distance and his heart skipped a beat when he saw a young girl with long brown hair in a white summer dress.  This dress was quite remarkable as the temperature was close to the freezing point on this misty and grey December day.  The girl moved around the forest with unhurried and gracious movements, saying hello and sometimes even frolicking with wild animals like squirrels and owls and badgers.  The scientist had never seen a forest girl like this.  After a while, the girl met an even more mystifying girl (with South-East Asian features) who was also wearing an immaculately white dress.  From a distance he observed both girls and after a while he realized they were paying a lot of attention to one tiny tree sapling of just three feet tall.  Both girls performed some mystic ceremonies around this tree and this serene spectacle had an inexplicably soothing effect on the scientist, who at that moment realized the fog had gone and the sunlight had broken through a hole in the clouds.  A ray of soft sunlight fell straight on the tiny tree and then the scientist realized this was not an ordinary tree, but a future mother tree of the forest ecosystem.  And all of a sudden it dawned to him that in a forest, not all trees were equal and that a good understanding of the interconnecting relationships between trees of all kinds of ages and species is crucial for a healthy ecosystem.  Some trees absorb a lot of carbon dioxide while others absorb less, yet they all seem to need each other to thrive.  This means a well-balanced mix of trees is crucial to have healthy and varied forest ecosystems, and by extension a healthy planet earth.
The scientist quickly jotted down his thoughts and observations in his notebook and decided to leave both girls in peace, while seeking a way out of this dense forest, filled with happiness because the fog in his head had cleared and now he really felt ready for his mission to make a contribution to a sustainable future for planet earth.
