"Weltschmerz: The kind of feeling experienced by someone who understands that physical reality can never satisfy the demands of the mind."

Lead track ‘Weltschmerz’ sounds like an instant Berghain classic; dark, massive, trippy, and with an emotional character all too rare within the genre. The kicks are banging, the verbed out percussion is fierce, and it all moves around a haunting melodic breakdown that artfully dances on the right side of ‘progressive.’ It’s a killer track that perfectly sets the tone for the whole record.

‘Damage Control’ is a straightforward flex-a-thon, a housier rhythm that struts along confidently. The technical term is ‘floor-filler.’ ‘Lonesome’ brings the emotion back, with it’s super-tense, unresolved melodies, this is perfect for all your mega-club yearning & gurning needs. ‘Relatives of None’ is the nastiest of the bunch, and probably the most at home on Turbo, built around a screechy synth hook. Finally, ’Weltschmerz (Melodic Theme)’ provides an epic ambient outro, crystallizing the emotional tones of the EP and establishing a sense of artistic vision that ascends well beyond the pedestrian.

Tale Of Us present a new collaboration with Vaal for the sixth release on their Afterlife label. Three years after they teamed up for ‘Concur’ and began to tour together, the trio return with their most anthemic offering yet. Vaal’s hauntingly-beautiful and instantly-recognisable vocals are the centre-piece on ‘Monument’, building on the style of her Wander To Hell EP (AL002). The drums and shimmering synth lines are moody and uplifting in the way Tale Of Us have made their own, arranged perfectly for the psychedelic breakthrough.

On the flip side, ‘The Hangar’ takes a different approach to equally devastating effect. It pumps with added urgency and a thunderous, steely bassline lunges out from the low-end. Designed for large soundsystems and big rooms, ‘The Hangar’ finds Tale Of Us and Vaal at their most direct and it’s something to behold.

Barnt and Stephan Bodzin, two artists whose stand-out performances at recent Afterlife events have made them firm favourites with the crowds, are tapped for the remixes (AL007). They both take on ‘Monument’, Barnt opting for a rolling, percussive direction and Bodzin more ethereal and transportive.

Power, Sensitivity and Refinement.

The "Takt"  created from the sounds wound on the Minibrute from the first notes makes the listener feel the rhythm. In consequence we can hear heavy blows and rough brasse, smoothly passing into the careless sound of the synthesizer with powerful bass and a nostalgic pad. A mixture of germane rave, acid house and melodic techno are the recipe for this track.

"Verum" opens ears to the listeners with sensitivity pad melodies, the mysterious choral voice, perseverance lead and powerful bass and kicks.
This combination is suitable for both clubs and home listening.

To complete this EP VOICES OF VALLEY put their signature there. Created an amazing remix with dynamic intervention and melancholic melodies will not make you bored. The remix is ​​made in the best traditions of these guys.

Amsterdam-based techno craftsman Bold Moves is coming to Us & Them with a three-track EP called Primal Instinct. The EP resembles various states of mind that a human can experience. The title track Primal Instinct is defined by a primal feeling, the survival instinct takes over and undermines common rationality. Thalamus is a rather high-energy club cut, the combination of driving drums and hypnotic synths are bound to attack all human senses. The final piece of music is Initializing. Initializing is a track that juggles between two contrasting emotions: despair and hope. The light airy synths give a sense of hope, however the dark and mechanical sounds give a different signal.

Rapidly rising Greek duo Voices of Valley return to Us & Them Records with the first part of their Book of Genesis EP. The first part contains an original called Samael’s Fall and two remixes by Corvum and In Anima. The original is a breath-taking journey through sound, a venture past arpeggiated melodies and driving basslines. Fellow Greek native Corvum has transformed the original into a more hypnotic odyssey. The carefully shaped synths and delay patterns give the track a unique drive. Closing out the EP is the French artist In Anima with a dark melancholic interpretation of the original. Silky pads are juxtaposed with glitching synths to keep you on your toes.

The second part of the Book of Genesis EP by Voices of Valley is a fact. The EP follows the same recipe as the first part: one mesmerizing original and two differentiating remixes. The original by Voices of Valley is called Helios. The track is characterized by the interplay between the dark bass and the ominous but hopeful synthlines. For the first remix Us & Them welcomes back Bold Moves. The Amsterdam-based producer has turned the original in a dark, intense and driving techno cut. The final track on the EP is the Never Lost remix of Helios. The Italian duo seems to be on a streak lately, every track that departs from their studio is utterly refined and beautiful. Their remix of Helios is no different, it’s a mysterious sounding melodic techno interpretation that fulfils all expectations.

It’s safe to say it’s been too long since we last saw label bosses and heavy hitters Pan-Pot grace Second State with their ‘Solace’ EP back in November of 2016. So to have them back with two big bombs and a remix from the one and only Petter B on their ‘Funke’ EP curbs all anticipation from all of us who have been dying for new material.
Kicking things off is ‘Spitzer’ with hi-octane percussion and reverb heavy acoustics spanned out over ten minutes where simplicity rules and the age old saying that “less is more” has never been more accurate. Flipping sides we see the duo take a similar approach on “Funke” but deliver a rugged and brutally mesmerizing lead that coaxes the inner devil inside all of us. Rounding out the EP is a carefully curated remix from Gothenburg’s own and former Hertz collaborator Petter B who hands over a beautiful rendition of ‘Spitzer’ where dense, lavish atmospherics carry a heavy looping groove to a gorgeous climax. It’s good to have the boys back and we think you will agree when you hear their stunning new ‘Funke’ EP.

Berlin producer Kevin De Vries has emerged as one of the capital's most hotly tipped newcomers since his track ”Eternity" appeared on Adam Beyer's Drumcode label in 2016. Besides such luminaries as Beyer, Sven Vath and Richie Hawtin, Tale Of Us have also recognised his talent, paying De Vries the compliment of featuring his track "Path To Immortality" on their Fabric 97 CD this year. If that’s not enough they’ve also given Kevin a place of honour on their very own Afterlife label compilation in the form of "Magoa".

Which brings us to the matter in hand. De Vries' debut for Cocoon is characterised by significantly higher levels of impulsive energy without ever losing sight of his instinctive feel for harmony. "Meraki" speckles shimmering harmonic textures over the structured bass end, reminiscent of sunlight reflecting on turbulent seas - absolutely perfect for dancing through long summer nights! Teaming up with canadian friend Weska "Sonorous" orchestrates a tropical heatwave before the cyclical after-hour techno of "My Blurred Dream" brilliantly rounds off this heavy duty 3-tracker.

Layton Giordani steps up for his first solo EP of 2018.

In terms of pedigrees, it doesn’t get finer than Layton Giordani. The Brooklyn-born DJ/producer followed up his lauded debut album of 2017, with a collaboration with Danny Tenaglia to close out the year and marked the summer of 2018 with a three-way collaboration with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet, ‘Space Date’. The period has been a big one for Layton personally, also. From humble beginnings in his native NYC as an Output resident, to being thrust into the bustle of the European club and festival circuit, he’s enjoyed a stint living in Amsterdam, growing and developing over this time. All these experiences have had a fundamental influence on him and his music. The four-track EP ‘Phase II’ represents a new chapter for this exciting talent.

Beginning with ‘New York to Amsterdam’, a track that draws inspiration from a classic by Yves Deruyter, Layton’s work packs a memorable punch as tough acidic undertones and brain scrambling synth effects undulate raising the intensity, making it a perfect opener for Adam Beyer when he played Berghain earlier this year. ‘Body Language’ follows, a track written when Layton was scrubbed out of touring for a month courtesy of a shattered elbow from a skating accident. Not wasting the downtime, he’s crafted a cut that’s sleek, sexy and smart, with a seductive vocal and rousing melodic riff that runs throughout. ‘Black Mirror’, stays true to its dystopic name, a stomping rave cut that pummels dancefloors with a menacing lead synth that’s purpose built for the cold months ahead. ‘Enter the Stratosphere’ is steely electro-tinged techno paired with atmospheric licks of melody, awhile maintaining the artist’s trademark low-end chug. A classy conclusion to an EP from one of techno’s brightest talents.

Ae:ther has been an explorer of sound for many years. His study of sound design whilst living in Milan, enables him to add an extra layer of depth to his productions - experimental and ambient, yet still able to entice dancers to the floor. He’s had music signed to Tale Of Us’ Afterlife imprint and his productions have attracted the attention of Damian Lazarus who commissioned him to remix his single All I Need w ith the Ancient Moons.
