What you are listening to is an overlapping of four different recordings of the same sequence of the eleven Aitake cluster chords used in the traditional Gagaku music. The sequence of the Aitake is played twice and backward from the highest root (hi) to the lowest (kotsu).
Each chord is played when the resonance of the previous one disappears.
As the chords get lower, the decay process gets slower.
Different touch and hearing are therefore indeterminate factors causing the desired out-of syncness.
This process is meant to create unexpected harmonic and rhythmic divergences playing with the textural density of the sound in between the chords, that leads to the japanese concept of "ma" in the title: 
"MA is the unit consisting of a single sound and its lingering ‘after sound’, considered an introduction to the next sound”.
