revisiting an old favourite with new & improved sound quality, mixing and arrangement. This is basically a repeating chorus, which is pretty catchy, but I’d love to eventually compose the rest of this tune, and have it played by jazz musicians with live instruments one day. After hearing Sarah here on Soundcloud, I knew right away that I wanted to write for her and work with her. Luckily for me, she agreed and so ‘Exit’ was born. With Sarah’s beautiful voice and poignant lyrics, as well as Alba’s incredible guitar, this has been a very special track to put together. I haven’t released anything in almost ten months…and it feels wonderful to be back.

Nat and I are both long-time fans of the great crooner, Roy Orbison. Like us, it seems he was a hopeless romantic, so we have contemplated this cover for some time. But it was a challenge to change it up from the classic original that Roy recorded back in 1961. Here we’ve given it a bit of a spin in several ways. Most notably you’ll hear us divide the song into two parts, the man who cries and the woman who goodbyes. Hopefully Roy would approve, but most importantly we hope you’ll enjoy this take on “Crying”. Seems to be an endless repeated theme for me ~ running away to the countryside, and in recent years this has been the Australian wilderness, from the deep south to the far north.

Dedicated to, and featuring Gary Reeves (aka Mountain Songs) on drums and cymbals (remixed) at the start. Banjo, lap slide guitar (acting as bass), beats and vox by myself. This song is for Gary, who has been a wonderful musical compadre for many of us around the world, via this  Soundcloud Village.

Respect and acknowledgement to the Traditional Owners of the lands, waters and skies in this video, both in Australia and New Zealand. Particular thanks to the Yolgnu people of Gapuwiyak who made me feel so welcome during my short visit to Arnhem Land last year.

What's This Song About Anyway?

Sometimes faith is best looked at like a photographic negative; what does our heart feel when faith is lost? It is so closely allied with hope that the two are hard to distinguish when either or both are lost; but tears are often the result. For many this Christmas, a troubled world only scratches the surface of the personal trouble felt from having lost faith in a loved one, themselves, and perhaps even God.  Christmas is a call to faith, to reach out beyond oneself in the hope that there is One who can give faith, or restore faith that has been lost.  "Hope" is what we consider next...

Here's a new version I did of the familiar holiday classic Auld Lang Syne. Based on a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns, the title essentially refers to the remembrance of times past. As we draw close to the year's end, it's such an ideal time to do just that, and also to reflect on the hope and expectation of things yet to come.

The Body Snatchers is a science fiction horror novel by American writer Jack Finney, originally serialized in Collier's magazine in November–December 1954 and published in book form the following year.

The novel describes the town of Mill Valley, in California's Marin County, being invaded by seeds that have drifted to Earth from space. The seeds, grown from plantlike pods, replace sleeping people with perfect physical duplicates with all the same knowledge, memories, scars, etc. but are incapable of human emotion or feeling. The human victims disappear forever.

The duplicates live only five years and cannot sexually reproduce; consequently, if unstopped, they will quickly turn Earth into a dead planet and move on to the next world. One of the duplicate invaders claims this is what humans do – use up resources, wipe out indigenous populations, and destroy ecosystems in the name of survival.

We have a music making process that fits our unique skills.  We each do the parts that best fit our skills and interests.  Dan Lockhart does the initial song development.  Dan Blackard writes the lyrics, perform the vocals, and adds lead guitar.  Dan Lockhart then takes the track and do all final production (mixing and mastering).

Dan Lockhart writes all of the chords, timing, changes, and develops the track.  I then send two tracks to Dan Blackard.  One track has Dan L. describing the song.  Tell him the key, the timing, and any oddities about the song (changing keys or time signature...).  In the track Dan L tell Dan B verbally where is the verse, chorus, bridge and any other important information.

Dan Lockhart then send a second track that does not have this verbal dialogue.  This is called the instrumental track.  This is a track to which Dan B. can sing and add his parts.  Dan Blackard then returns  four pieces to Dan L:  a complete version of the song, a solo track of his vocals, a solo track of his guitar parts, and the artwork to accompany the song.

Dan Lockhart add his information into the original file.  Dan L. listen to it and make changes to the song to enhance the meaning of the lyrics. He sometimes adds instruments or takes away some instruments.  As Dan L. play many instruments (guitar, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, pedal steel, violin, viola...), he can make a lot of adjustments.    On rare occasions he move pieces about.  Dan Lockhart then masters it and prepare it for final production.
