蘿蔔絲 luóbosī—Carrot Shreds, was one of my nicknames. In a time of even more distance to the political tendencies in China, growing totalitarianism, new cult of personality, and saber rattling, you start to wonder what is left of your intercultural dreams. My blurry hopes and experiences got exorcised into shreds to dissolve in the full consciousness of my own stupidity. Moooncake-shaped piece with a wrapper—Beijing Opera from Hell—and a central song. It was directly inspired by artist Yan Jun (yanjun.bandcamp.com) and three performances I was part of in 2007, under the name of 馬恩列斯毛 (ma-en-lie-si-mao; Marx-Engels-Lenin-Stalin-Mao) or “More Less More” in Beijing.

Alice was a rose, looked perfect in the light
Sharp around the edges, drew blood most nights

Hazel was lavender, soft and rare

Fiona was a fern, lived best in shade
I gave her sun, she slipped away
Ruth was thistle, proud and coarse
Kicked like a mule, had no remorse
