Steinway artist, Chad Lawson, decided Chopin needed a new introduction.  Along with violinist Judy Kang (Lady Gaga, Ryuichi Sakamoto) and cellist Rubin Kodheli (Kanye West, Norah Jones), Lawson has arranged ten Chopin works into a minimalist landscape.

It's a risk editing the "poet of the piano" but one that Chopin would be proud of.  

Taking 10 Chopin works, Lawson decided to scale the works down to a minimalist setting.  "I knew even if bare-bones, Chopin's works could still be as spellbinding as the original compositions we are so familiar with." says the pianist.  

Produced by Chad Lawson & Alejandro Clavijo. Mixed by Stephen Lee Price.  Mastered by Michael Graves of Osiris Studios (Atlanta, GA).

Bats, fox and birds form the animalist backdrop for her fifth studio album created in virtual rural isolation, in the West Sussex countryside under the 'shed'. 'Beauty Sleep' sees her returning to a song format after her abstract composition 'ō, music for haiku'.

Pakistani-American avant-composer and drummer of the cult experimental acoustic trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, shares the second single 'Onna at Pulse', taken from his new album 'Beta' — out June 20 to coincide with the first ever Love Record Stores Day, in support of local record shops.

One in a series of experiments chronicling Naqvi’s understanding of writing for a modular synth, 'Onna at Pulse' sounds like as if it moves in and out of the realms of control, twisting around a melody with a life of its own; "Onna at Pulse was the first piece of music I made with an extremely rudimentary modular synthesiser. I had just acquired two components and I wrote this simple exposition as an exercise to see what the machine would do. It was like teaching one eyeball to blink." — Qasim Naqvi

Meant as a prequel to last year's 'Teenages', a modular synth suite in six parts, 'Beta' evolved from the most basic elements of a modular synthesiser. As Qasim explains; "One oscillator and a random voltage generator which is a module that releases sporadic currents through the system. Ironically, this component provided a lot of warmth and humanness to the music, a kind of fallibility. At the time I felt that this music was underdeveloped but listening back, I think the 'Beta' tracks add an interesting dimension to the entire 'Teenages' arc. They’re the zygotes.”

If 'Teenages' captured the sound of electronics living, breathing and mutating of their own accord 'Beta', rather, describes the moment they came to life.

"Felt The Transition is a new minimalist solo piano perspective on my experimental chamber folk album previously released in 2018, called The Transition. This music is reinterpreted on my 114 year old upright piano which was very kindly donated to me by my friend Adam Selzer who previously ran a recording studio in Portland called Type Foundry. This piano is very sentimental to me as it was used by a handful of my favorite musicians on their albums over the past 20 years, namely Peter Broderick’s ‘How They Are‘ and ‘Two Balloons’.” — David Allred

"A grand piano is a particular kind of beast to play, which will only sound refined and beautiful if you command a strong control over the keyboard. Each slight change in touch results in a different timbre, which will be rewarded when used wisely and will be your trapdoor when you fail to hold the horses. I remember how I had to squeeze the music out of the grand piano in the Graz sessions, and while I enjoy listening to it now, I kept these recordings secret for a good while – they sound like a much younger version of myself to me, and a lot of the musical expressions from that time would be impossible for me to replicate today. Close friends whom I had shared the record with reminded me of it once in a while, and some of the pieces got released in other versions on the album Spaces in the meantime. But somehow, any piece of music you create wants to get out there in order to find you, which is why I’m glad to share this beast with you and do hope you enjoy listening to it too!

Happy Piano Day 2021 people! A new quiet filled the air last spring as nature had the chance to become loud again through lockdown. Instead of the sound of traffic, I noticed the chorus of life in the garden: the abundance of bees, birdsong and new blooms. I wanted to respond to this in music, with sounds equally as hopeful, light and delicate as the unfolding of life in spring. I hope it brings some joy :-)
