Here's a personal fave from recent weeks/months - the third instalment of the Bristol-Newcastle connection, centred on a specific time around the end of '95/early '96. 

This mix is an attempt to capture the happy memories I have of the music back then, and they don't get much better than Randall & GQ's mindblowing Ruffneck Ting Xmas '95 set at Lakota, witnessed with my man Olly @wiseguisedjs, back from his first term up north. [To deviate slightly, Randall's set is more than worthy of yor time, it's an absolute masterclass of selection and mixing: https://soundcloud.com/selectabwoy/dj-randall-live-at-ruffneck-ting-22121995?in=selectabwoy/sets/ruffneck-ting-mixes-1994-1996. L Double and Kenny Ken's superb sets from the preceding events also bear a heavy influence on my selection here. A MASSIVE shout is due to the @ruffneck-ting crew for putting on such awesome nights in the south-west. Beegitup!]

Back to the selection, and musically speaking, there's a melting-pot of styles to consider. Leaving aside the more atmospheric GLR-esque D&B, Jungle in its pure, ragga/reggae-influenced sense was still in effect, but the dominant sound of the dancefloor now bore a heavy hip-hop influence - represented here by Trouble On Vinyl, S.O.U.R. and Ganja/Frontline (the Still Smokin' LP was destroying everything in its path), which paired beautifully with the stripped-back rollers of the time. From the jazz-tinted efforts of the Full Cycle crew, D-Bridge and Swift to tougher releases from The Dream Team and Lemon D, I regard these as the DJ-friendly glue holding the best of this era's sets together. In amongst all of this we have the tear-out element - superb melodies from Jonny L, The X and DJ Rap mingling with the brutal futurism of Dillinja and the Ram/Liftin Sprits crew. What a time it was; I hope this mix does it some justice.

1994 - 1997 Old Skool Jungle DnB Mix II (Mickey B)

The Council of Chops is battling the insectoid gromflamite forces of the galactic federation, in a bid to return the multiversal THC crystals to the 420 dimension. Since the removal and quarantine of the crystals by order of the galactic commission, interdimensional cannabization effects have all but dissapeared. With billions of dabbers up in arms, spliffs having no effects, and people generally very grouchy, Chopstick Dubplate launched the mission to unify the crystals with 420. The operations team led by Jacky Murda, Aries, Tuffist and King Yoof, completed re-acquistion and offloaded the cargo outside the entrance to 420. The insectoid police force appeared at the dimensional gate just as baskets full of the green gems crossed the border. Momentarily outnumbered, reinforcements General Jah Mikey, Mr. Williamz, General Pecos, Jah Mason and Jah Roamy, arrived at the crucial moment to defeat the galactic federation, and unify the 420 dimension.

DJ HYPE & GROOVERIDER--Helter Skelter - The Past, Present And The Future - 1995

Following on from the bleak desolation of the Dystopia mix, here's one that evokes happier times. 

Journey with me back to 1996 - a time when a young DJ Smart and his best pal MC/DJ Cruise (now a middle-aged Selectabwoy and Olly WiseGuise respectively) fearlessly ventured from the south-west to Northumbria uni, bringing the rolling vibes of our hometown to the north-east, armed with little more than a crate of wax and a big bag of skunk each - well, that's how I like to remember it.

It was a fantastic time of sheer abandon and wilfully outrageous hedonism - and as you might imagine, many of the memories are blurred in the fog of time and substance abuse. Without the ubiquitous tyranny of cameraphones and social media to preserve our nefarious activities, all I can really tell you is that we went for it, hard... but I can at least recall a few of the DJ sets at house parties and club nights (including our own Wax On Wax Off venture); spinning old skool hardcore that I was picking up for 50p a pop in 10-15 Music Exchange (that no other fucker seemed to know about); Olly on mic duties for luminaries such as Randall & A Guy Called Gerald (I have no recollection of the latter but am reliably assured it did happen); the two of us playing b2b supporting the likes of Ed Rush, Kemi & Storm; the mitsi-fuelled pride of seeing Roni Size's Reprazent tearing it up on stage in Middlesborough during their first UK tour. Not to mention all the townie nights out. It was the best of times. 

My cue for the selection here comes primarily from mine & Olly's record bags of the era, inspired in turn from an obscure Venn diagram intersection between the legendary Bristol Ruffneck Ting nights, the all-important One In The Jungle shows, and, 300 miles further north, my first impression of the northern D&B scene: L Double's trademark dreads bouncing up and down as he played to the half-empty upstairs room of some seedy topless bar in South Shields. He still rinsed it out proper though - Lee's selections back then really encapsulated everything I find great about this era: a weighty, crowd-pleasing mix of jump-up, rollers and techstep, blended to perfection. Forward a year or so and D&B was all over Newcastle as it was everywhere else, but it's those first memories that really stick in my mind. 

Big shout to Olly first and foremost, and our long-lost crew - Pottsy, Bailey, Jon Waco, Chris Weir, Mark Dowie... Scotty (howay play the game lads) - I hope this mix finds you again someday.
