Aaron Snapes – a veritable UK tech funk dynamo – has been simmering on Claude VonStroke’s radar since he jumped out of the crowd at Stealth Club in Nottingham about 4 years ago with his flash drive full of demos. They have stayed in touch ever since with Claude recognizing the skill and providing small notes and advice along the way.  It wasn't until last year that he really caught the full attention of the entire dirtybird collective with his massive re-fix of Mr Oizo’s iconic “Flat Eric,” not to mention some extremely strong appearances on the bubbling Perfect Driver imprint. 

Here we find him making his dirtybird debut with two spotless additions to his party portfolio. The bubble-jack slap-attack “Panther” ignites with a series of soft subs before dropping into a loopy, choppy robovox hook and a strutting drum dynamic that chugs with raw sonic muscle. While most panthers purr and prowl, this one clouts and howls with rich low-end elements and absurdly chunky beats. Dig deeper for the rush-rinsed tech funk jam “Space Bass”. Wherein a bulbous flurry of basses lick and tickle beneath a series of teasing techy risers before dropping into an icy sea of breezy chords. Complete with a sub-narrative of mischievous loop trickery, every element of the groove is laden with intricate detail. 

Two pristine produced tracks, one incredibly hot talent to keep strict tabs on: Aaron Snapes’ reputation is developing with every single release… And this is his biggest to date.

Growing up in the bustling music scene of London, Aaron Snapes championed old school hip hop, drum and bass, trance, and garage before house music eventually took over. Never one to get caught up in the compartmentalization of genres though, Aaron has a simple and easy guideline in the studio, “I just want to make fun, groovy music for people to dance to.” Further detailing his musical canvas with his imaginative music, Aaron keeps bodies movin’ and beats jackin’ as he returns to Perfect Driver Music for the On It EP out on December 8th.

“On It” will surprise you at the beginning of the extended player with its borrowed minor keys and will then delight you with an attention to detail that sprinkles percussion in triplet form overtop shuffling claps and snares. Up next is “Know You Better” whose bassline bounces like a guttural bayonet and then leads you to rising melodies that melt into detuned menagerie. On the remix tip, Treasure Fingers brings trouble and midrange bass with his edit of “On It” while Jay Robinson reconstructs the melody’s chord structure. Closing out the remixes (and the EP entirely) is Eyes Everywhere’s version of “On It” with a back-to-basics nature, impacting harder than one might first think.

Whether he’s bringing the space bass or vibing with the Amsterdam underground, for 2014 Aaron Snapes is
definitely on it.

The DIRTYBIRD crew havent even had time to take their counsellor uniforms to the dry cleaners post-Campout, but already theyre dishing out more bulletproof slabs of future-flexed acid house.

Will Clarke mans the controls: Making his Dirtybird debut in January with "Badness" on DIRTYBIRD 10, follwing up with "The Boogie Woogie" EP and lazer-snapping "808Frenzy" on "DIRTYBIRD BBQ - Grill$ons Revenge" collection, the bristly Bristol-based spandex enthusiast has enjoyed a beautiful summer with releases on Defected, Emerald City and Turbo and unforgettable shows across the US, Australia and Europe.

Returning to the label with the bulbous two-track EP "Turn It Up," Clarke does just that: Writhing in carnal groove simplicity, he taps into the roots of timeless, low-down, butt-wriggling house music with three obscene examples of strong-armed tech funk. "Can You Funk" punches with Breach-level hookiness, and Turn It Up does the loopy-loop with Dirtybirds trademark vocal trippiness. 

Keep it turned: Will Clarke has been one of 2015s most exciting and authentic house music success stories. We can thank DIRTYBIRD for that. Stay tuned for more very soon...

Will Clarke - Can You Funk

Last year I put a Bruno Furlan track on our 10 year compilation without really knowing anything about him. But later that year I went to Brazil and met him in person. I have to say I rarely meet a young producer with so much pure, good-hearted enthusiasm as Bruno Furlan.  This young man is so happy and eager I found it impossible not to like him. (I even met his lovely parents…twice!) This always goes a long way at DIRTYBIRD but of course it still comes down to the music. 

Bruno Furlan has captured a very simple, VERY funky sound that is really special in my opinion.  The beats are huge yet nothing is over the top, everything is quirky and bumpy and very much what i like to play.  The  samples are all slightly odd and placed in very particular spots in the pocket so that the beats really ride. You can feel the funk oozing out of these tracks. I give it all high marks. The big track is “K.O.” but all of them have different charms for different situations. I urge you to please check out this new talent from Brazil!
