Classically trained instrumentalist and Cocoon alum Malandra Jr. kicks off proceedings on a dynamic note with a pair of blissed-out tracks featuring blossoming synths, supple drums and whirring glitches. Citizen Kain follows suit with two energy-loaded numbers, the more dreamy and spaced out 'Crush', followed by the vocal-heavy 'Balance'. Next up is German producer Heerhorst who takes a turn for deep and pensive melodies with 'Centaurus', while 'Hydra' stands out with powerful synths and a rattling beat. Bold, intense synths are also at the core of Transcode’s 'String Theory' and 'Molecular Cloud', with the former offering a massive breakdown fit for peak time, and the latter a more resolute atmosphere overall. In the release’s final quarter, we find Olivier Giacomotto with two tribal-tinged constructions, the slow burner 'Moonshine', and its more unhinged counterpart, 'Bonobo'. Made in Paris rounds off the Trip with a couple of stirring slices brimful of radiating synths and spacious breakdowns.

All in all, a steady trickle of dancefloor-primed pieces setting off sparks of all the different types of energy needed to sustain a coalescent set.

Niconé returns on Ritter Butzke Studio with his three track “Arpiano EP” including a Remix by Matthias Schuell. The Mad Eyed Arper is a pushy and repetitive sequence that relentlessly pushes the listener into pleasant insanity. The Psyched Piano comes in a more subtle manner with catchy piano chords and phrases only to be complimented with the screaming remix by Matthias Schuell that combines the madness of the arper with the melodies of the piano.

Seasoned producer Oliver Kapp takes us back to the glory days of underground techno where pounding sound systems ruptured the space time continuum for fun. The old guard will already know that Kapp has pedigree, from running and releasing on his own record labels Indulge and Raygun to a string of appearances on Stockholm LTD, Logistic and Gigolo, his dedication to the cause is unquestionable. Which is why his first appearance on Cocoon Recordings is long overdue.
What we get are DJ friendly tools designed for that time of night when the the second hand stops ticking. Kapp presents a perfect collection of timeless warehouse techno, like the genre itself there are no beginnings or ends, just a constant barrage of hi octane machine funk, underpinned by heavy duty beats that somehow manage to induce a sense of weightlessness on the dance floor.
Scaling down the bpms to a sub 130 tempo, the EP is a masterclass in how to balance the old school with the new. „Loud Whisper“ is both tough and relentless, generating an hypnotic state that ensnares the dancer in suspended animation as strobe lights flicker across closed eyelids. Scattered hihats motor forward and trance inducing sequences splice and dice causing mind and body to drift apart. „Mantash“ is an altogether gentler excursion. Loose tribal rhythms slalom through the metronomic kicks before giving way to distant chords that embrace the dancefloor in a warm fuzzy glow. This lush vibe extends over the rest of the track while the beats roll on, accompanied by delicate melodies that enhance the ride. Euphoria and delirium combine on the aptly titled „Rapture“, as chopped up vocal fx alternate across a hard hitting 909 pattern complete with angular snares and ride cymbals that bang the box into submission. The fluid, rolling grooves of „Sketch“ then conclude proceedings in a flurry of delayed percussion lines that skim the surface while pressure builds from below. Even at breaking point, Kapp never overcooks his arrangements, utilizing a carefully controlled combination of elements that evenly span the frequency range.
Oliver Kapp‘s „Mantash“ EP on Cocoon Recordings signals a return to the roots of the scene. It’s an absolute must for all the purists out there.

Patrick Mason and Rekids boss Matt Edwards return for their second appearance as SRVD with two cuts entitled ‘RAW FILES’.

Not confined to a single art form, Patrick Mason is a young creative at the forefront of Berlin’s art, fashion, dance music and LGBT scene; an influential club kid who developed a friendship with Matt Edwards after a chance meeting in Panorama Bar, resulting in numerous studio sessions and improvised live sets. Joining forces in 2018, the pair adopted their SRVD moniker – an alias inspired by New York’s vogue scene – before dropping their debut release on Rekids, playing at various clubs (notably Panorama Bar), not to mention an unforgettable performance at Boiler Room x Pornceptual.

‘The Yard Man’ presents rattling drums, piercing vocal chants and a tormenting melody that SRVD has been destroying dancefloors with over the last year. On the flip, ‘Brotha’ presents a compelling groove as a shuffling rhythm joins abrasive synths and Mason’s penetrating voice.

Wehbba collaborates with ghetto tech legend DJ Deeon, to deliver another superlative EP on Drumcode.

Since his debut on Drumcode in 2017, Brazil’s Wehbba has become one of the most dependable and impressive artists on the roster. Last year saw two standout EP’s ‘Eclipse’ and ‘Catarse’ drop on the imprint, alongside ‘Just’, his strong contribution to A-Sides Vol.7. He also made his mark playing Drumcode events at OFF Week, Resistance Ibiza and the much talked about double header in Manchester and Bristol when DC took over Warehouse Project and Motion respectively.

A true master craftsman in the studio, his first contribution for 2019 is typically impressive. A huge inspiration to Wehbba since his nascent raver days, ghetto tech icon DJ Deeon contributes a fierce vocal to ‘We Have Bass’, after a serendipitous hook up in São Paulo. A peak career moment collaborating with one of his original heroes and the artist responsible for the classic ‘Freak Like Me’, the resulting percussive-heavy cut kicks like a rodeo bull. ‘Third Wave’ is coffee geek Wehbba’s homage to his favourite brew, constructing the production to mirror the experience of a caffeine fix, as a loopy trance-inducing groove leads to powerful synth stabs that are heavy on impact. ‘Steamroller’ is a stripped back slice of techno driven by the Brazilian’s Korg MS-20 and found form after it initially begun as a studio jam inspired by Richie Hawtin’s ‘Minus Orange’. 

A Jean-Michel Jarre fan stretching back to his childhood, ‘Another Mistake’ was conceived after Wehbba saw the French legend in concert last year and was subsequently able to meet him backstage through a mutual friend. While creating the track, the producer imagined Jarre playing the main layers of the hook on his famous Laser-harp, eliciting an almost celestial quality with the melody. This is a stirring slice of techno fit for stadiums. The EP ends with ‘Purge’, the artist’s stream-of-consciousness expression recorded in one-take and a beautiful beat-less way to conclude the work.

Patrice returns to SPEICHER through our newly minted X series. X was created as a means to not worry about long vinyl manufacturing lead times and allow us to be more spontaneous with tracks that we feel should be immediately released to the world.

Grace and Puppets are prime contenders for X – why? We can let Patrice explain himself. “I had been stuck, unable to finish anything in months. To break out of this creative dead end, I decided a change of scenery would do me good and I moved into the Kompakt studio at they’re Cologne headquarters for a few days, working day and night without much interruption.”

The results are two weapons of choice titled “Grace” and “Puppets” that both characterize Patrice’s signature sense of delivering an audible means of showcasing his immense depth of passion for music by a means that is both subtle and explosive.
