"For my cover version I chose this track by Yeasayer. The original is a  beautifully sad yet upbeat breakup song, strident and bright with synth lines cascading around a heartfelt vocal. I wanted to make it sound far more broken and fragile, so I re-played it on the piano, pitched it down, then mangled it quite heavily so it came out sort of wobbly and knackered sounding. I wanted to leave it quite bare, just letting that amazing melody lead the way." - Jon Hopkins

Jon Hopkins - I Remember

When I was touring in Mexico, I was lucky enough to have some days off during a visit to Mexico City, and took a trip to a nearby Toltec/Aztec Pyramid site called Teotihuacan. It's a beautiful place, but when I asked about its history I was told that most of the knowledge and culture of the people who built it was lost, with the arrival of the Europeans. Now it's turned into a rebuilt money making tourist trap, with the loss of its real meaning.

I recorded the space and sounds there with binaural mics, so I could try and capture some of the feeling of it, including a storm which came in, and then I wrote a strings part inspired by the feelings of the visit there. Tom Hodge brought the piece to life by playing a piano part in addition, and I loved the piano so much I decided to make two parts, the first with the piano only, combined with the binaural recordings and a randomising delay feedback network, and the second part with the strings. The first part of Teotihuacan is available exclusively from the free download Quotient Series, and the second part will be coming on the Artefact EP in April.

Containing five synthesiser-led pieces, ‘Loon’ was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues on from the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For this new EP the duo wired an Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the mixing desk and performed live takes on both instruments. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape.

Like on ‘Stare’, their first collaborative affair in 2012, they simply followed what was laying in front of them, and this time they were driven by some new synths, a kick drum and tape effects. Indulging in dub, the tracks where all performed rather than engineered, with Ólafur riding a few elements on faders and Nils bringing effects in and out. After running several mixes, they went for the five strongest moments from this session. The release was announced on a joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com together with the launch of an intimate 45-minute studio film titled ‘Trance Frendz’, featuring another seven improvisations.

A tantalising taste of what’s to come, ‘Unter | Über’ is a rather microscopic affair and yet a record that perfectly captures the last days of summer before winter sets in. The under two-minute song twins must be one of the shortest singles released this year. Recorded on Nils’ own piano in his Berlin studio flat, these are two of the most personal and optimistic pieces of music we have heard in a long time. Entwined impeccably these are tracks you can listen to over and over again.

‘Unter’ received a remix by Dutch experimental music maverick Rudger Zuyderveldt aka Machinefabriek. The A-Side also inspired German filmmaker Ralph Etter to take his camera with him out on a field and shoot a stunningly simplistic video of barley flowing in the wind. Both, the remix and this entrancing piece of cinematography will accompany ‘Unter’ and ‘Über’ on their digital release.
