For some entrepreneurs, their drive causes them to be so focused on their short-term survival -- they forget to design a legacy upfront for their long term thriving. Or they feel they have so much more time in that metaphor of how 'the days are slow but the years are fast', in the illusion we will be here forever. 

However, with this procrastination, you become like a library book in that once you are gone, so too is your knowledge … a book never to be read again in being able to pass on your wisdom. So how do you live into the present while projecting out what you would like your legacy to be? First, your legacy will be a collection of your actions during your lifetime. Second, you will need to set aside a certain amount of time to help guide that legacy to success, to get to that next point in excelling at your core values. 

Think of it this way: Designing your legacy requires planning and upfront thought leadership. Write down your vision statement and ideal obituary, with the strides you’ve made. How can past pain serve your legacy?

In this week’s episode, Angelina Carleton speaks with financial planner Bryan Mitchell. Bryan highlights how a loss is four times more impactful in one's memory and how we should have the uncomfortable conversations in the needed shifts around patience.

From royalty to aristocrates, the Chateau Versailles has hosted many events over the centuries. In 2011, Robyn Blaber enjoyed his first costume ball at the palace and 18th century fashion inspired him to explore the re-creation of the garments worn during that period.

After Robyn attended his first couture formal function and enjoyed the experience immensely, he brought his closest friends each year thereafter. Mr. Blaber then wanted more options than what the dozen costume shops in Paris offered. Thus, he began his journey of discovering how he could create 18th century fashion himself.  

Artistic expression is a big deal for Robyn: “at the end of the day, you have created something – everything you take for granted had to be created by someone … some of the greatest things in life are things that someone had a passion for”. Each dress or jacket requires about 15 meters of fabric and he begins each piece with a specific friend in mind.

In the past decade, Mr. Blaber realized he created products in the software industry for others who then owned the intellectual property. He had little to no control over his work products and they became obsolete in 2-4 years. However, his 18th century fashion hobby became a passion. One might say he commenced a tangible legacy with his fashion collection of 20+ dresses, men’s jackets and other specially designed pieces.

The greatest joy he finds is having a friend premiere his latest fashion piece. He is living his values through his tailoring skills so others can be transformed by his art. Robyn states “you are given one life … participate in that life in creating, contributing, involving people… you need to be a part of this world.” Mr. Blaber ends this podcast episode by highlighting his latest men’s jacket, a piece of over 850,000 stitches, and a statement that his only regret is not starting 18th century fashion sooner.  In closing, he emphasized his artistic expression fulfills his personal legacy.
