In a profoundly unsilent world, noise stands in for silence. Amplified to a roar, stretched, compressed and filtered, it becomes a thundering black backdrop to how small experience becomes by having to filter out detail.

On the other hand, black noise is a space - the negative roar left behind after the sudden ending of any continuous sound field. It's not unlike the state sought in the practice of meditation, but more immanent and beyond one's control, and commonly only of short duration.

Blacknoise is a performative investigation into these unsilent silences.

Maxim Starcke is a composer of contemporary classical-, electroacoustic- and soundscape-based music as well as a multi-instrumentalist performer and educator.  He completed a Masters in Composition with distinction (portfolio and dissertation entitled 'Aspects of Landscape Music: selected music by Ingram Marshall and Eivind Aarset') at the South African College of Music, UCT in 2012. Prior to this he completed a Bachelors in Music degree with distinction in Ethnomusicology in 2004. Starcke, as a multi-instrumentalist, performs on classical & electric guitar, soprano & alto saxophone, 6-string electric bass, laptop and electronics - these in different combinations depending on the project or ensemble.
