I was lucky enough to get the call a few weeks back as Revolver opened their front room for the first time since Covid.  The brief was clear, do that freaky slo-mo thing.  Mate, I have hours of ketamin couch music I would love to share!! Hope you like it and it helps bring some peace to this new lockdown situation! X

Рух (Ukr. – [Rukh] – Movement) is a compilation series launched during the war in Ukraine and released by Kyiv-based label and promoter Worn Pop. All proceeds from this compilation will be donated to the ‘Musicians Defend Ukraine’ fund that helps Ukrainian artists on the frontline. 

From the beginning Worn Pop has established itself as Kyiv’s post-punk influenced formation, booking artists like Boy Harsher, Lebanon Hanover, The Soft Moon and in the same time promoting new Ukrainian acts. The label came to the party scene launching Black! Factory Festival together with Closer Club and since then has expanded its’ borders to regular club nights at Closer and other venues featuring dark and obscure dance music, inviting La Mverte, Kris Baha, Curses and more artists from similar movements. 

All the artists on this compilation built the actual character of Worn Pop by playing at our events. Now they join the very first release in a series that contains 10 tracks exclusively produced by them and thoughtfully folded into one story which can be listened from the beginning to an end as a solid album. 

Among the International names featured, there are Ukrainian acts coming, such as Geuxx, Hungry Boys, Ship Her Son and Aircraft. Their tracks here are written during the full-scale russian war against Ukraine which still goes on.

Swedish producer Ivan Berggren, aka Paresse, returns to Eskimo Recordings with the 'Animachine' EP, 4 brand new tracks of beautiful electronica that joins the dots between the cosmic disco of his fellow Scandinavian producers, the early Trance sound of Frankfurt labels like Eye Q and the even earlier machine music of bands like Kraftwerk.

It is the latter band whose philosophical fingerprints, at least, are most visibly present on this new EP that was inspired by Berggren's wrestling with the age-old question of just what we are, simply biological machines running on electrical impulses and chemical reactions, or vessels filled with some ineffable spirit.

What that translates to in the recording studio is four stunning new tracks that kicks off with Where East Meets West, its pulsating synth arpeggios and relentless beat, accompanied by stirring Vangelis like melodies that rise and fall as rave stabs and echoes of lost voices create an air of faded grandeur. Upping the tempo the EP's second track, Meat Robots, an underground house number whose acid bass lines and ricocheting percussion, will have even assembly line robots jacking as it builds to a hypnotic conclusion. 

If that's helped you build up a very un-robot like sweat then the glacial Journey of the Heart slows things right down, taking us deeper into ambient house territory, its chugging beat, pulsing synths and piano chords sparkling like the first frost catching the sun. Concluding the EP we have Anima, a stately 100bpm coda to the EP filled with disorientating overdriven synths that spiral in and out as the track marches on in robotic lockstep, a heady combination of early Trance, ambient and Italo sounds, perfect to crash out on a bean bag to in the back room of a club and debate the nature of humanity to with a perfect stranger.

With releases on labels like Eskimo, Frau Blau and Correspondant, and collaborations with artists such as Titiyo, Paresse's small but perfectly formed discography that's draw upon the sounds of electronica, dub, Italo disco its easy toes why his records have found favour with DJs from across the musical spectrum from Yuksek and Jamie Jones to The Organism and Phillipi & Rodrigo onto the likes of Purple Disco Machine and Ewan Pearson.

Beyond The Struttosphere is a new collaboration between Leo Strutt (Strutt Bros DJs) and Ben Chetwood (Flying Mojito Bros, Damian Lazarus’s Ancient Moons) aimed at channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic dark disco. Their first track, New Frontier (Directors Cut), was self-released late in 2019 and is a slow-burning chug through the cosmos, littered with spacey vintage synth motifs and crunchy power chords. It found much acclaim among Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnson’s A Love From Outer Space online fraternity, and was featured in The Juan Mclean’s (DFA Records) recent contribution to Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space mix series. The original is given a makeover by K-Effect, a stalwart of the dark disco scene. His take meanders down a progressive cosmic wormhole with driving basslines and trippy synth riffs that drive the tune to its spaced-out finale.

The boys are back with a new offering on Gouranga Music, Rolling Thunder, a faster, more forthright dancefloor-orientated affair that means business. Complete with gnarly arpeggiator riffs, swirling psychedelic delay lines, a trippy vocal sample borrowed from Platoon, and their now trademark driven guitar power chords. The title track has been given the remix treatment by two aficionados of the scene, firstly the Mexican dark disco wizard Mufti turns up the heat, beefs up the bass, and dials the chug up to 11 to deliver a solid dancefloor destroyer. Cosmic disco legend James Rod delivers a second remix that strips the track right back to its core elements resulting in a minimal slow burner filled with dirty analogue electronics that builds up like a pressure cooker as the track progresses towards its conclusion. The EP finishes with a third remix by the in-house label crew, Gouranga Clan, which reimagines the track as a driving interstellar trip that is sure to spin out a few right-minded partygoers!
