With his roots deep in the Copenhagen DIY music scene Joachim Palsby, aka DJ TOOL, has been playing and collecting different music for over a decade. After many years of playing punk, metal and electronic noise music, he slowly developed an interest in techno and trance.

For years he has been roaming the international dance floors as a loyal dancer and ended up behind the booth with the skills of all vinyl DJ-ing. DJ TOOL is a classic example of a DJ that merges directly from the floor to the booth.

He is the co-organizer and resident DJ of the queer party series Mala Junta. Mala Junta is a smaller intimate party focusing on old school, faster and harder techno and trance that is merging in the city of Berlin. The queer party quickly became among Berlins most recognized parties for its particular music profile and unique, intimate vibes.

His sets are an authentic and well-executed blend of sexy techno and gloomy trance. The sound is old-school, hard and fast, but always funky and uplifting. His closings are highly recommended with a passion and expertise in longer sets.

Happy Sunday, 5th Dayers. We’re happy to be back with podcast #170, coming at you from DJ and TRÊVE cofounder, resident and curator, Medulla Oblongata.

Medulla Oblongata’s doorway into the world of electronic music was via a long-standing immersion In the ambient world, the inspiration from which can be heard throughout much of his artistic outputs, including hybrid ambient sets incorporating tape samples, drone machine loops, and synths. The musical universe he inhabits thus encompasses ambient and drone, through to deeper hypnotic and more driving techno, with a more recent gig being an all-night long ambient -through-to-deep set alongside Terence Fixmer at KALT in Strasbourg. 

This mix recorded for On the 5th Day is inspired by his November 2022 gig with Dasha Rush and Justine Perry at KALT, and thus you can expect an immersive dance floor orientated trip to set you up beautifully for the week ahead.

For a few days each summer, deep in the Amsterdamse Bos on the outskirts of Holland’s capital, you’ll find a restless pack of ravers rushing from one stage to the next in pursuit of the freshest new sounds. That’s half thanks to Casper Tielrooij, who swapped the Hague for Amsterdam and started his Dekmantel parties back in 2007. Two years later those became a label and by 2013 a festival. Now in their tenth year, the forest festivities show no signs of slowing momentum, due in part to an exceptional and quality mix of genre-agnostic rhythms. Tielrooij finds creative freedom for his patchwork of influences through Dekmantel Soundsystem: and here they are. Bassiani Podcast 167 is a groovy and undulating exploration in sound recorded live at the club's Dekmantel showcase, one that clicks, klangs and wobbles, a synth-packed and searing-hot mix courtesy of Casper’s covetable record collection.

DASCO is a hurricane force with recent roots in Berlin, active for the past decade and packing as strong a punch today as she ever has. That’s as true of her music as it is her persona. She has the kind of rare, contagious energy that’s capable of setting dancefloors ablaze: animated, celebratory and full of joie de vivre. As DJ, she draws from the wells of Chicago house and UR, as much as 90s UK rave: dispatching rhythms from the booths at Tresor, Panorama Bar, RSO, Bristol’s Motion and many more. As producer, she’s released records on the likes of Shall Not Fade and pushed her own vision via her recently launched Bisexuality Exists imprint (2022). Catchy name and it serves a purpose. Through her music, DASCO wants to lift people up, that includes people like herself who identify as bisexual and see a frequent tendency towards bi erasure: ‘With the label, I would like to show the world that music - like life - is rarely ever black or white.’ The label’s first release was the acid influenced Get High With Me, featuring her own vocals and a slew of punchy 90s beats - an attempt to bottle the feeling of dancefloor rapture that washes over a crowd every time she plays. She’s here again spreading love and positive vibes for Bassiani Podcast 201. Felix Benedikt, alias Alpha Tracks, is a Techno producer and DJ based in Vienna, Austria. His mature sound has often had him mistaken as a veteran producer. In fact, Benedikt is actually a talented young artist with a wealth of music already under his belt. The first release on the reactivated label Morbid had strong international resonance and Alpha Tracks has continued with highly acclaimed records like Blue Hour since.

The music of Alpha Tracks is mainly produced live on analogue machines with different guest musicians, focussing less on technical fetishism than on the live dynamics of studio collaborations. The result is a sound that refers to the Rave era of the early nineties. Alpha Tracks blithely ignores tempo limits or taste doctrines. Aesthetic taboos or even fragments of often maligned genres, are not treated as a retro fetish, but are folded into the contemporary oevre with playful Viennese charm.
