Scanxiety - have you felt it? This week on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast I'm dropping a mini-episode about scans and how to minimize the stress and fear around them aka "scanxiety." 

I never wanted to be known as "Caryn with Cancer" but the reality is that’s who I am. My cancer has made me a better version of myself and for that I’m grateful and want to share what I've learned in order to help others. Whether you have cancer or not, odds are you may have to get a scan at some point, so on this mini-episode I share my thoughts on how to make it a little easier.

Whether this is your first scan or if you have a chronic illness and you’re often getting scanned - I know scans can be scary, frustrating, annoying or insert however you are feeling here...These are my thoughts in hopes of making this time a little easier on you or whomever is getting the scan.

Top 5 Tips and Thoughts for When You Need Scans

+Remember - this is a test - it may be nothing and even if the scans reveal a diagnosis you don't want - there's hope!

+Take a day (or time period) of rest prior to the scans to help minimize the stress.

+Bring along "good luck charms" to your appointment or items that make you smile.

+Be sure to enroll in your doctor/hospital's online portal for quick access to information.

+Get copies of your scans on CDs from the Medical Records department before you leave the appointment to have on-hand for second opinions.

Mini-Episode: Easing the Scanxiety around Scans

Have you ever felt like your job didn't change...but you did? This week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast is Tina Conrad, known as the wonder woman behind the highly acclaimed podcast, DJ Breast Cancer, who is also a successful Merchandising Manager. Tina spent over 20+ years in the corporate world. She’s an experienced buyer working for a big brand in the retail industry. Like so many of us, she’s worked for amazing leaders and horrible bosses and talks about how she found tools to map her career forward and live with purpose even after hardship. Many people are struggling right now, whether they’re unemployed, uninspired or unhappy with a boss. Tina shares her story of stress and mental anguish on the job…which led her to finding a way to reclaim her life.

Tina is one of the most authentic and thoughtful people I know. Her work for the breast cancer community is amazing. She’s in her sixth season of the podcast where she highlights stories and resources for those touched by cancer or adversity. She’s also the founder of the Hope Journal Project. Tina is the cheerleader you want on your side...personally and professionally. 60. Renee Nicholson: Ballerina Learns to Dance Again with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Have you ever considered looking into your ancestry wondering if you would stumble upon something interesting? This episode is about discovering family secrets, one that pushes you to re-examine your existence and experiences. I'm honored that this week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast, Jane Fine, bravely shares hers and to a degree mine, because we're related. 

My bright and bigger than life, (though shorter than most,) Aunt Jane is a highly acclaimed, award-winning painter and teacher. A wildly smart and passionate conversationalist, her abstract art focuses on social and political themes, which has been exhibited nationally and internationally for over 20-years. Today's episode showcases her backstory, one she didn't know and only discovered recently by taking a genealogy test. Jane re-tells the story, which led her down a path of reexamination of past experiences, relationships with family, as well as her own identity.

During this episode, Jane not only shares the background, she also talks about how she has continually navigated. While her art and creative avenue has been a tremendous help with coping, we barely touched upon her elaborate career. Recognized globally, Jane is famous in the art world, having been reviewed frequently in The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Art in America among other periodicals. She's also the recipient of several prestigious grants including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The New York Foundation for the Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, she has been awarded world-renown fellowships and has been resident at The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, The Millay Colony, The Cité Internationale des Artes in Paris, The Golden Foundation and The Hermitage Artists Retreat. She is currently represented by Pierogi Gallery in New York City and collaborates with her husband, my uncle, artist James Esber, under the pseudonym "J. Fiber."

72. Caryn Sullivan: How to Start Healthy Lifestyle Changes

No stranger to darkness, CEO and founder of Pretty Girl Makeup, sepsis awareness advocate and celebrity makeup artist, Christina Flach, knows how to see beauty and light around her even during hard times. On this week’s episode of “Happiness through Hardship” - The Podcast, Christina dives into the loss of her husband from sepsis as well as the grief she experienced through losing her son and mother. While she's familiar with hardship, she refuses to allow it to define her. I never wanted to be known as Caryn with Cancer but the reality is that’s who I am. My cancer has made me a better version of myself and for that I’m grateful. Mini-Episode: What to do, say and give to a friend diagnosed with cancer

This week’s episode on Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast highlights Laura Saltman, an author, meditation teacher, intuitive guidance coach and TV/Digital Host. Her journey from red carpet reporter to Hollywood Healer began after her life was turned upside down - she lost her brother to cancer, her father to suicide, suffered multiple miscarriages and more. Laura NEEDED tools to help her cope and live beyond the pain, sadness and depression.  
 
She looked for alternate therapies to heal and then she jumped in…She learned, experienced and became and expert, teacher and soldier in the spiritual game. She has learned how to transform lives through connection to metaphysical intelligence inspiring people to think, live and love better. She’s well-versed in meditation, chakra balancing and intuitive healing.

At one time, this seemed WOO WOO to me...and I would have smiled and walked away. Though, in recent years, a dear friend who loved quantum physics would talk to me a lot about the healing power of energy. She encouraged me to be open to all modalities of healing. Then I met Laura on a panel where we both spoke at ShiftCon…. and she spoke a similar language so I tried more holistic driven healing modalities. When I was open about changing the language in how I spoke to myself, when I was open about finding time to just be in silence and when I was open to using different modalities on how to heal - I felt calm. I felt a sense of peace and I felt good. 

I encourage you to listen to Laura and be open...even if this is new to you or not something you would do. I’ve found it’s been helpful to know what is out there in the world that can help with stress-reduction, ailments and just coping with whatever life throws.

Laura’s journey is a rollercoaster and her heart and soul so kind, pure and helpful to many...we can all learn a lot from her stories and her insights on life.

8. Laura Saltman: Transformation through Tragedy - Family Deaths, Miscarriages and a Soulful Journey

This week’s guest on Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast is previvor, Abby Lawson. She’s the founder of Just a Girl & Her Blog and an organization and design expert, who with her husband runs an entrepreneurial venture. She’s full of advice for anyone wanting to organize their home, design a new space and even help show others how blogging can be a family run business. While I found her and fell in love with her organization of Lego space, she’s known for offering courses and free printables on a variety of topics. Though we could talk for hours about creating a thriving home, on today's episode Abby shares her story as a BRCA1 previvor. A Previvor is someone who has taken action to eliminate risks of disease, often having a predisposition to cancer. This group includes people who carry a hereditary mutation, a family history of cancer, or some other predisposing factor. Abby tells us about the decisions she made knowing she was a carrier of BRCA1. BRCA1 is a genetic mutation and those who carry it have a much higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer compared with someone who doesn't have the mutation.

9. Abby Lawson: A BRCA1 Previvor Organizing Life

I cried throughout the interview with this week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast. Jenna Jacobs McPartland's story is incredibly heart wrenching and beautiful. Years ago, Jenna left her Midwestern roots to follow her dream of being on Broadway. She created a wonderful life she loved in NYC...She married an amazing man, was pregnant with their first child and then 911 came and she tragically lost her husband, Ari. Though she’s been through an incredible ordeal, she shares with us how she put one foot in front of the other and how she’s been able to keep going, focus on love and find a purpose.

Jenna's story is full of advice and wise words on how to move forward during and after tragedy...so please listen to this episode and if you like rate, review and subscribe. This helps with our podcast ranking and increases the chances of others finding it.

Jenna shares how she found that focusing on her newborn, Gabi, and spending time with close family/friends made life a little more bearable. She talks about how service efforts helped her move forward with the day-to-day. She tells us how patience is important. It often takes time to heal, and part of that healing process helps when you're compassionate with yourself and surround yourself with love. 

Through the years and as time went on, she has focused on nourishing her family. She has done this through cultivating a positive environment as well as through wholesome, delicious foods. She believes "Food is love, after all" and studied at The Natural Gourmet Institute in an effort to bring love to her family and community. She is now happily remarried with a blended family and owns a highly acclaimed restaurant, The Stand Vegan Cafe in Fairfield, CT.

11. Jenna Jacobs McPartland: Love, Loss & Moving Forward After 911

Lauren Chiarello Mika, founder of ChiChiLife and true positivity champion shares her story of cancer then high-risk pregnancy on this episode of "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast. As a two-time Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor who knew she would likely have challenges getting pregnant, today she is blessed with identical twins. Although, her road wasn’t easy. 

As you will hear in today’s episode, both Lauren and I talk a lot about how life is precious. Overcoming cancer twice was incredibly tough. However, navigating four hospitals and numerous surgeries in just a few weeks after birth for one of the boys, while also tending to his twin brother at another hospital, (then home) was unthinkable. Lauren shares what got her through. It’s amazing to hear how she kept herself moving forward and still found tiny moments of joy both with her cancer journey and the rocky entrance her twins made into this world.

13. Lauren Chiarello Mika: Double Miracles - 2x Cancer Survivor and Twins

Laura McCarthy, a power woman with a heart and a BIG smile is this week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast. She highlights her story about being a single mom and reflects on what she might do differently now.

Laura used to want to do it all and struggled trying to overcompensate playing all the roles she believed her son needed. When she opened herself up and embraced a few different communities, she found it easier to receive well-needed help. In addition, she didn't take care of herself. For years she believed that she didn't have the bandwidth to exercise, eat right or take even a moment to breathe. When she started doing yoga she was found stress reduction exercises that worked. It also gave her a whole new tribe of support and friendship. Through the years, she’s found tools to be present, even when times were tough. Today, her passion for helping others and styling all has brought her to an incredibly happy place.

Laura’s insights are helpful whether you’re single moming, married or living a stressful life. She’s smart, stylish and FULL of resourceful ideas. She shares on the podcast her struggles, her suggestions and even a few of her stylish tips at the end.

21. Melissa Berry: Helping Find Your Vogue with The Cancer Fashionista

I’m excited to introduce you to Lynn Giovannelli on this week's episode of "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast. I was told she's a bright light and amazing in 1,000 ways and with that introduction, I couldn’t wait to connect with her. People who know her best say she's a kind, loving and passionate spirit that is filled with energy, faith and compassion. Lynn is no stranger to hardship - having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and saw her company fall during the real estate crash of 2009. While her health has changed over the years, friends all say that one thing that has remained steady is her unbounded spirit. I’m honored that today Lynn shares her story about her recent ALS diagnosis.

This episode is incredibly heartfelt and uplifting despite her terminal diagnosis. Even someone as positive and compassionate as Lynn had been before hearing her diagnosis; she still stepped up her game. She's laser focused on finding joy with her family and in her life. She's also diving into new healthy living practices and finding energy in the exploration. Lynn provides tremendous insight and inspiration for anyone that receives the news they have ALS. In fact, she can motivate us all to find joy in our lives as she radiates positivity and love.

29. Lynn Giovannelli: Radiating Joy Even After ALS Diagnosis

She’s an author, speaker, healer, and artist devoted to inspiring and guiding women. At 26 years old Anne was brutally raped and attacked by a stranger. On today’s episode we talk about the attack and how she moved forward afterwards. 

In this episode and her memoir, “A Fierce Belief in Miracles,” Anne shares her story of healing. This journey pushed Anne beyond her comfort zone to rediscover resilience, strength and ultimately how to be whole again. It’s a story that can help others dealing with any hardship in life proving that there is hope and many different paths that can ultimately lead to more peace and happiness. She’s a powerful force lighting the way for others recovering from any trauma.
