Your thoughtful poem so well articulates your leadoff statement: “The map to a better future is clearly written in the past.”   It’s true, to move forward, we must first remember, then accept.  Otherwise we just grovel in the present, mad at one another about how we got here

Lyrics that make you think, Dave! The present is made of the past... and the past of the present. Which one, it's up to us to decide.

I guess I am hung up on how and why we repeat mistakes over and over.

Learn from it, don't distort it,

so what's an hour...It's 60 minutes

so what's a second..now that's really fast
so what's it matter..not much if they die in the past

time is such a waste of time ,look at all I've wasted
worrying about the time that's left and not taking time to live it
I'm so afraid of dying that I do no more living
I think so much of what I want that I do no more giving
I pretend to live forever though I know that it's not true
So I lie and say tomorrow I'll find time to call you

so what can make it last...I mean forever
and what is the past...an ancient river
so what is the future...a shadow in the night
so what does it all matter..we need the past to give us light

we live and die every day and dump our deeds along the path
stumble forward in the dark as if forever we will last
we have to heed the deeds we did and remember what they sowed
or else we stumble off a cliff and the future leaves us cold
and alone with the ghosts of our regrets of what we could have done
if we had listened to the past and not partied in the sun

so what's it matter, the past??
