Lenteavond een uur na flinke regenbuien in Bos en Lommer. Op de achtergrond is de ring A10 rond Amsterdam goed te horen. De merel zingt zijn lied en er wordt wat gerommeld in keukens met openstaande deuren. Opgenomen op de 3e verdieping vanaf het balkon. 
Spaced Omni opstelling met DPA4060's en een Marantz PMD661. Geen filters of editing.

“Approximately 1.3 billion years ago in your time, there was an invasion which occurred in a universe near this one - an invasion of darkness. The darkness is a non-souled, non-living substance, antithetical in structure to the basic life inherent in every atom of creation. It is not known where it comes from, or who or what designed it. It has the tendency to permeate anything that it touches, and few have been able to resist it...
 
The universes had never experienced darkness prior to this event. One could liken this invasion to the effect of the bite of a poisonous spider or snake on the human body. The original universe was affected then sickened, and essentially died in a very short period of time. Of the beings living in it, those who could do so fled into the neighboring universes, unknowingly bringing contamination with them. The structure of the dead universe was collapsed and melted back into the all, with great sadness and solemn ceremony...
 
Those who had escaped seemed at that point largely unscathed. But from that time forward, the surrounding universes began to experience some disharmony. This began to grow and magnify, spreading rapidly from the highest orders, downward through the dimensions...”

The Dark Dimensions

This recording is done with two Contact mics, attached to the wire rope which acts as a support for the pylon, used by SEPA, for measuring water levels in the River Forth. There are so many harmonics travelling through the wire, and it sounds like its own symphony. The vibrations from the traffic crossing the nearby motorway bridge are travelling through both the air and ground, which causes the wire to vibrate. Although not instantly recognisable, you hear a rhythm of the vehicles passing over a gap in the bridge structure, which causes fluctuations in the frequencies of the vibrations. You also hear the Doppler effect from the passing vehicles.

In the hill rainforests of north-eastern Sabah, tiny Bornean Treehole Frogs (Metaphrynella sundana) call to create a magical nocturnal soundscape.

In order to make their calls as loud as possible, males of this species adjust the frequency of their 'toop' call to match the natural resonance of the small water-filled treehole they live inside. Often a number of males can be heard calling from different sized holes in the same area, creating a delightful soundscape of 'toop' notes at various pitches.

This is a personal project of mine, and not for profit, to capture the sounds of everyday life in, and around, the city of Stirling. There are many reasons why I am doing it, and all of them valid, to me, but I think the best way to describe the project is my perception and reflection on Jonathan Sterne’s claim that “the history of sound implies a history of the body”.

Brandon La Belle also provides another apt quote to aid me; “sound is intrinsically and unignorably relational: it emanates, propagates, communicates, vibrates, and agitates; it leaves a body and enters others; it binds and unhinges, harmonises and traumatises; it sends the body moving, the mind dreaming, the air oscillating.”
 
The world that we live in today has become so visually orientated, people have forgotten how to listen, and I have to make a clear distinction, there is a difference between hearing, and listening. Sound was once our key to survival, taking fight or flight cues of danger from the waves that passed through the air, the danger was recognised from the sounds, way before it was perceived visually. I want people to listen to every detail in the sounds I record, and I guarantee, they will hear things they would not have had they been there at that moment in time.
 
I remember when I was younger, and listening to the sounds around me then, and know how much they have changed in the present day, which has been happening from the dawn of time. So, another aim of mine is to create a complete library of the sounds of our city, and preserve them in full. I would like to think that in 100 years time people will listen to these sounds, of our time, and wonder at how it was different.

There are so many uses for sound files like this, from ambience in TV and film, to sound design from the field recordings. Its a wonderfully creative process, turning the sound of a street ambience into a lush synthesised pad, which you would never recognise; and is how a lot of sound is designed for electronic music, orchestral hybrid music, film sound tracks and special effects.

I will also be using my sound files for this purpose, so, that said, they are free to listen to, but permission is not granted to reuse them in other projects. All the sound files are water marked, inaudibly, and filled with meta data, and their use tracked. If you are interested in using the sounds I record, please, just get in touch, and we can talk. Soundscapes of Stirling is a completely non profit project, it is for interest and archive, and to aid my learning in a live project, so any licensing agreement would be for name credit only, where used.
