Beyond The Horizon

Jed, a former actor with a past life as a thrashing Zombies (a faded but cherished memory), had retired from the limelight. Now, his days were spent alongside Leroy, his best friend, sorting through the bounty of the town's recycling bins. They salvaged what could be sold, creating a modest livelihood from discarded treasures. In Jed's worn denim jacket pocket resided an unlikely pair: a packet of Winfield Blue cigarettes and a box of red-headed matches.  They represented a quiet, unspoken bond, a love story woven into the fabric of Jed's daily routine.
The matches, crimson-hued and eager to ignite, and the Winfield cigarettes, their smooth tobacco a comforting companion, knew their time together was finite. Each day, they held a quiet anxiety, a premonition of the bin's inevitable embrace.  Jed, oblivious perhaps, never noticed the subtle fear that pulsed from both sides.  Their shared existence was a delicate dance of anticipation and acceptance, of shared sighs and the unspoken promise that one day, they’d both be discarded into the great beyond.

One fateful day, a car accident shattered the routine.  Jed, miraculously, survived, though not without consequence.  A life-altering coma ensued and, in that silent dark, something else was lost – the mundane rhythm of his carefully built existence was drowned in a sea of unconsciousness.  Thirty years later, Jed awoke. He was strangely at peace, as though his soul had wandered far beyond the realm of stress and time and returned home. 

The world had spun on, but somehow this same box and packet of things still was there in time and their love was the same.
He stirred.  His body, achy and stiff, protested the slow return to life’s cruel realities. Slowly, hesitantly, he reached into his pocket. Within his grasp, a stark and immediate reality. One match. One cigarette.  The match trembled, a tiny flicker of defiance in the vast darkness.  The Winfield Blue, cool and inviting, felt like a cold comfort in his hand.  There was nothing left but the last cigarette and the last match.  Orders - the hospital's staff, who probably had little time for human relationships - had been smoking his smokes during his coma and he had a faint sense of betrayal.

He remembered.  The match, a symbol of what fleeting passions can be.  The Winfield, a representation of moments that fade but remain etched in memory.  The last match, a stark reminder of a love lived entirely in the small corners of a man's life.  He drew the remains of the last Winfield cigarette, a slow, deliberate movement in the sudden quiet world he awoke in.  The last match and the last cigarette flickered a flicker of defiance like defiance or a spark of recognition.  It symbolized a love that had faced not only the trials of time, but the inevitable oblivion.

Jed remembered Leroy and their days in the recycling bins. He remembered how both these little inanimate objects had brought him a spark of connection.  He remembered the unspoken love between the matches and the cigarettes, a love played out in a man's pocket.  It was a love story that transcends the boundaries of the living and the inanimate. It was a testament to the quiet, unassuming connections that weave through the tapestry of our lives. Jed took a drag and then lit his last match, a small flame dancing in the vast stillness of his surroundings. In that quiet moment, he felt a love, a love story, that would linger long after the final puff and the final flicker.
